As soon as the truck skidded to a halt in front of the hospital, Shantel threw the door open and jumped out before Danny could fully brake.
With a pounded heart, she pushed through the double glass doors and almost immediately, the harp scent of disinfectant hit her like a slap.
She approached the reception desk, boots clicking sharply against the tile. The woman behind the desk blinked up in surprise, but Shantel didn't wait for pleasantries.
"Where's Dr. Matt? He said he'd be waiting here."
Before the receptionist could speak, a tall man in light-blue scrubs appeared from the corridor beyond. "Miss Shantel?" he asked.
"Yes," she said, breathless.
"I'm Dr. Matt. Please, come with me."
Danny joined her just as they started down the hall.
"I left my grandmother sleeping," Shantel said, trying to hold her voice steady. "She was stable. Her breathing had improved. So what happened? Why is she suddenly in surgery?"
