Chapter 21 - Cracked Reflections

Iris woke up, a bright light purple sun shining; the now ingrained smell of mountain mint pierced her nose, making her quickly stand up, her body shaking, hopeful for what she believed to be true.

She begins looking around. The environment is entirely different from the forest. There are houses, flowers, a large river behind her, and a blade stuck on it, its colors appearing as a pink and white liquid moving in the blade.

She walks around trying to pinpoint the smell; at the same time, her mind is engulfed with the beauty of the pink blade. A blade that reminds her of a blade similar to the one her mother had.

She remembers trying to draw it, but its complicated rose design on its handle and the position of the blade combined with the fluid red and pink colors made Iris abandon trying to draw it, instead preferring to watch her mother use it to train.

The memories gave her more hope; she continued walking with the smells becoming stronger and stronger the more she walked; however, there was not a single hint of a living being close to her.

Is this a dream? Where am I? Did I get killed in my sleep? How is that possible? What is happening?

Iris returned to the blade, and her mind decided to touch the blade. She extends her hand.

Boom!

"Ahh!!!"

Iris' body violently rips apart its left back part only to show a grotesque wind-like extremity appearing, her blood spilling everywhere with every drop that touches the floor, transforming into a vile pile of insects.

"Ahh!!"

Iris wakes up, her face pale, her body trembling; she quickly pats her back to see if there is anything wrong. Fortunately, there is nothing wrong with her. She looks around and sees the cocoon beside her, the regular-colored sun, and nothing out of the ordinary.

A sudden pain where the grotesque wing in her dream was located began pulsing and burning. However, just as quickly as the pain appeared the pain disappeared.

Why did I dream about my mother's sword?

Iris touches her face, trying to control herself, to regain her senses, and to begin this new day.

After over ten minutes of calming herself from the nightmare, she starts feeling better. She gets up, cautiously looking around, her hand on her back to prevent anything from happening to it.

She slowly walks to the river, nervously looking at the floor and up to not find anything wrong or anything that will cause her nightmare to become reality.

She walks on a different trail, which leads her to the river faster than her original route.

She looks at the animals drinking water without any care in the world, all trying to survive in this mad forest.

Iris walks up to the river without caring about her disguise, walking at a decent speed, her small steps unbothered by the animals as she closes in on the river.

She arrived at the river, looking at her reflection, her red hair with hints of white resembling her mother, her face pale and terrified. Looking at her reflection caused her to tear up; she is confused about how she has reached this state. She was always the most beautiful everywhere, but now she is just a fragment of that.

She gets down and begins drinking water; the animals are ignoring her presence. The more she drank water, the more she had to see her reflection and the more distorted it became.

After drinking enough water, she walks back; her image of herself is completely shattered; she feels disgusted at how much she is doing her mom a disservice. Everyone always remarked how Iris looked like her mother; they were all jealous of how beautiful they were. Everyone was excited about the beauty Iris would become, being the combination of the most beautiful Rose and an Angel, people remarked how handsome he was and how he was the superior being's finest creation.

As she walks back, she sees the unicorn she swore to slay, eating grass without a worry in the world. Her mood improves by seeing the unicorn; now, focusing her hatred towards it combined with her hunger, she runs towards it, her shield appearing unconsciously.

The unicorn looks back and, without thinking, runs away with such speed that Iris would never catch up to it.

Iris looks up and sees many fruits; she quickly makes her way up and grabs them, and later smoothly descends and continues walking back. Stumbling upon many branches of wood and a large silky leaf gives her the idea of building a shelter.

Arriving, she sets the tree branches she could collect and tries to envision what her shelter would look like for the rest of the day.

Iris' entire week consists of her waking up, getting a drink of water while avoiding her reflection, getting some fruits, getting some branches, and constructing a shelter for her. However, without any experience, all of her plans fail.

Her first plan was to create her old house, which quickly failed due to her not having a proper foundation. Her second plan was to create a house by stacking the sticks to later add the large leaf on top; similarly, without a foundation or any material to stick the stick to, her plan failed.

Her later plans all ran into similar problems, all as a result of her lack of skill and materials to stick the sticks together. Her newest plan failed by a strong wind throwing all her sticks down.

Frustrated, she walks back to find stronger and more resistant pieces of wood when she sees the silver horn tip of the unicorn looking up and then eating grass. Iris is now fed up with her failures and having to eat fruits every day and the unicorn presents itself as the best way to satiate both.

She carefully sneaks up to the unsuspecting unicorn, preparing her shield to defend her from any attacks while modifying the shield to have a pointy end to cause as much damage and bleeding as she could produce with a small shield.

She stands up, her distance as far as she can make her shield away from her then smashes her shield towards the unicorn's neck.

Boom

The unicorn deflects the attack with its horn, pushing Iris back. The unicorn angrily stares at Iris, stomping its feet, preparing for an attack.

The unicorn launches itself at Iris; the speed of the unicorn surpasses what Iris expected, the horn just an arm's length. Iris gave a small grin.
