Changing direction, I headed for the river that marked our territory's edge. There was only one person who could help me now.
"I should kill you where you stand," Ingrid Devereaux said coldly. Elias's mother sat behind her desk, looking every bit the Luna even though her mate had died years ago.
"You need to hear me out first," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. Walking into her private rooms had been risky, but I had no choice.
"You abandoned your post to follow my son on his foolish quest," she said. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't have you executed for desertion."
I put both hands on her desk and leaned forward. "Because your son has found his true mate, and right now they're both in danger."
Ingrid's eyes narrowed. "Kamla was his mate."
"Kamla was never his mate," I replied. "She used a spell to trick him. The witch Celeste confirmed it."
