The moment Renar dropped to his knees, the entire room stiffened in shock. Caelum made a move to step forward, to pull him back up, but Callista held him back with a shake of her head.
Caelum's own chest burned, tightening with each of Renar's ragged breaths, as if he were drowning in the same agony. He never imagined someone like Renar, of all people, would look so utterly powerless in front of his own father.
Jarreth spun his chair away from Renar and gazed out the window, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
"That priest… was a fraud. I did everything he told me to, but in the end, my wife still died." He turned back around to face Caelum, his eyes cold. "It worked on my sister, even if only to prolong her life a few minutes after you were born. So no, I don't think anything that bastard said could ever be proven."
He opened a drawer, pulled out a stack of papers, and tossed them in front of Renar.
