The more days I spend in this world, the more emotionally absent I become. Or was I always like that? The day I met Clem, I was hoping to dump her on Lee, but that failed, I saved Shawn, but was it my goodwill or just intellectual curiosity?
I shook my head, standing on the balcony. The sun had gone down the horizon, its glare with its heated vision nowhere to be seen. I stood with another company now; Carley was working near the RV with reddened eyes.
I sighed and looked at Kenny, who had changed the lookout position because the RV had heated up so much this afternoon that you could make an egg on it.
"Let's eat," I said to him. "That's what I was hoping for." Kenny stood up with enthusiasm. I followed behind and reached the fire below; there were 4 chairs, a crate, and stacked tires, making the sitting area.
Carley was tending to the fire, and Lilly was setting up the steak I found in the mart I looted yesterday, Katjaa was nowhere to be seen, While Duck was drawing and Clem was helping him.
Kenny sat on one of the empty chairs. "Where's Katjaa?" I asked. "Oh, she's looking after the trio," Kenny said, turning to me.
"The injuries weren't that deep," I muttered as I walked to their room.
Inside, I was greeted with Katjaa giving them water. "How are they?" I voiced, getting inside. Katjaa noticed the visible tension on their faces. She chuckled. "Haha, it's alright, it's just Wesker," Katjaa thought nothing of their fear.
"They are much better now, I was here to invite them to eat with us." Katjaa said to me and turned to look at them, I turned my gaze to the trio; I could taste the fear in the air, 'Cowards.'
The mother shook her head, "No, no we don't want to bother you all," she said while Alicia and her brother nodded. Katjaa looked disheartened, "Oh, well then-" she was interrupted by me, "We insist."
Alicia clenched her jaw, gripping the blanket draped over her legs, her eyes flickering between me and her mother. The boy swallowed hard, trying to sit up straighter as if to prove he wasn't scared.
The mother hesitated, sensing there wasn't much of a choice.
Katjaa, oblivious to the tension, smiled warmly. "It'll be good for you to eat with everyone. Come on."
I didn't wait for their answer. I turned and left, knowing they'd follow.

We sat around the fire while the meat cooked on a fire pit grill grate we found in the RV along with many other things. Lilly was sitting beside it, cooking with passion and tears because of the smoke from the fire.
Soon, I saw the trio walk out of their room, now slightly limping while following behind Katjaa. "There they are," Kenny said with a smile.
They sit opposite me while Clem brought Duck, Duck went to his dad and she sat on my right, and Carley sat left of me, which honestly surprised me.
Lilly watched as Clem took her seat, and sighed in defeat, "Go help her," I said to Clem to help Lilly, she nodded and went over to her.
"So, where were you guys before all this?" Kenny asked the mother.
The tense trio turned to Kenny while glancing at me. "We were on vacation in Florida when all this started, so we fled from there until Steven picked that cursed SUV, and we were surrounded by those things. He drove and drove, leaving behind people who needed our help. Maybe it was that karma that caught onto us." She sobbed.
"I'm sorry," Kenny looked down, "And that was reason enough for this asshole to shoot my dad," Nick voiced, his tone laced with anger. Everyone except Alicia and her mother looked at the kid and then at the ground. "He was already dead." I said. "More the reason to not shoot him," The boy said, furious. ""Hey, hey. Don't go around accusing people. You do know that once you become like them, you can't turn back, so he did what he had to." Kenny defended me, not knowing the full story.
"He wasn't bitten!" Now, Alicia, who was furious at the group for not listening to their side of the story, yelled. Carley frowned. "Stop lying," she voiced. Alicia stood up. "He wasn't bitten," her statement clearer than ever.
"Carley," I called her, she pouted but quieted down, "I shot him because he turned," I declared, "Are you deaf or stupid? What part of 'He wasn't bitten' Do you not understand?" Alicia retaliated while her mother held her by the arm.
"You turn, no matter what, bite or not, once your brain shuts off, the virus takes over," I said. The silence was palpable. "What!" Everyone turned to me
I was about to explain when Nick started to laugh, "This asshole is now making excuses, don't you all get it? He's trying to cover up his murder." Carley and Lilly glared at him, shutting him up, while Alicia and her mother looked horrified at the revelation.
"Wesker, what proof do you have of this?" Kenny questioned while Lilly was lost in thought. "Dad… turned without a bite," Lilly mumbled, putting the pieces together, remembering that the door wasn't broken in the pharmacy. The group looked at her with pity.
They ate in silence and went to their room as the moon rose above us. Carley and I were on watch today; she was sitting by the fire, looking into the fiery pit as if lost.
I climbed down from the RV, putting my finger gun on her head, "And you're dead," I said and took a seat next to her, "Don't ponder on the inevitable death so much that you forget to live." I looked at the sky.
"Wesker," she said my name, I turned away from the stars above, and looked at her, my gaze questioning, "I love you."
