Chapter 41: The Aether Unbound
Carter Farm, Montana – Morning
Ethan lands quietly in the Carter family's backyard, the barn's worn planks creaking under a chilly breeze. Inside, Thor lies on a cot, armor cracked, face pale, muttering feverishly about "Asgard's fall." Jane Foster, eyes shadowed from sleepless vigil, monitors his vitals with a tablet.
"He's been like this since you brought him," she says, voice tight. "Muttering about elves and darkness. It's… haunting."
Ethan kneels beside Thor, his super hearing catching ragged breaths. "Any change?"
Jane shakes her head. "Stable, but no hammer. He said it was 'taken' before he collapsed."
Ethan's jaw tightens. "Malekith."
He activates a memory crystal, linking to Jor-El's AI in the Martian Fortress. Jor-El's hologram appears, voice steady.
"A cosmic rift destabilizes reality, driven by the Aether, wielded by Malekith, the Dark Elf warlord of Svartalfheim. The Aether, the Reality Stone, reshapes existence at a molecular level. Malekith's symbiote allies, born from a primordial void, seek eternal darkness. Midgard's cosmic convergence—a rare alignment of realms—makes it a nexus to anchor their shadow across the universe."
Ethan nods. "So Malekith's using Earth as his cosmic stage to blackout the cosmos?"
Jor-El's gaze is unyielding. "Precisely."
New York – Same Time
In Ethan's townhouse, Laura tests her Kryptonian suit, its silver lines pulsing as she slices a training dummy. Lily watches, awestruck.
"You're like a knight!"
Laura snorts. "Save the fairy tales, kid." The suit boosts her reflexes, nanotech syncing with her mutant physiology.
Lily's eyes glow silver, precognition surfacing. "Malekith's coming, with a broken hammer and a red ghost."
Laura's claws twitch, texting Ethan: "Kid's seeing Malekith, a busted hammer, and a red glow. Trouble's near."
Ethan replies: "Stay ready. I'm bringing Thor."
New York's Underbelly – Meanwhile
Peter Parker, as Spider-Man, tails an Oscorp truck packed with military gear, spider-sense buzzing. He hacks the manifest, texting Ethan:
"Supes, Oscorp's funding Laura's armed stalkers. Trouble brewing."
Ethan responds: "Keep at it, Peter. Pizza's on me."
Peter swings off, muttering, "Extra cheese, please."
Carter Farm – Afternoon
Thor stirs, coughing, eyes cracking open—bloodshot but fierce.
"Kryptonian…" he rasps, spotting Ethan. "Malekith… brings oblivion."
"Easy," Ethan says, steadying him. "What did Malekith do?"
Thor's voice is grim. "Malekith, the Dark Elf, wields the Aether—the Reality Stone. He bends reality, turning air to fire, stone to void. His symbiotes, shadow-beasts from the abyss, crave darkness. They overwhelmed me, the Aether scarring Mjolnir, my hammer, and Malekith took it."
Jane's tablet beeps. "One stone did all that?"
Thor nods, pain in his eyes. "Malekith seeks Midgard's convergence, a cosmic fulcrum where realms align, to shroud all existence in eternal night."
Ethan stands. "We're stopping him. Can you move?"
Thor struggles, wincing. "I must."
Ethan lifts him gently, ignoring Thor's protest.
"Kryptonian, this is no warrior's way—"
Ethan cuts in, soaring skyward. "Save it, Thor. You're my VIP." They streak to the Helicarrier, Ethan's cape a red blur.
Helicarrier – Evening
Ethan sets Thor in the conference room. Nick Fury eyes him.
"Odinson, you're an Avenger now. Don't make me regret it."
Thor, leaning on a chair, nods. "My honor, Fury."
The Avengers gather: Tony Stark in his suit, Steve Rogers with his shield, Natasha Romanoff checking gear, Clint Barton spinning an arrow, Peter Parker fidgeting, Laura Kinney in her glowing suit.
Tony leans back. "Okay, Malekith, an elf with a reality-warping rock and gooey sidekicks, wants a cosmic blackout? Sushi it is."
Steve glares. "Focus, Stark."
Laura crosses her arms. "If Malekith's as bad as Thor says, we hit him fast."
Natasha nods. "Good instinct, Kinney."
Peter raises a hand. "So, how do we fight a guy who turns reality into mush?"
Fury cuts in. "SHIELD's tracking Malekith in Greenwich. He's warping terrain—buildings melting, skies darkening. Move out."
Ethan meets Thor's gaze. "Ready to reclaim your hammer?"
Thor fists his hand. "Aye."
Greenwich – Night
The skies churn crimson above Greenwich's ancient Convergence site, realms bleeding together. Buildings tremble, glass shatters, and the ground quakes.
Malekith stands at the epicenter, Aether pulsing red in his chest, his form phasing in and out of reality. Symbiotes slither beside him, joined by frost beasts, fire demons, and a corrupted Kronan titan from warped portals. Mjolnir rests in his grip, scorched and dented, unusable by his unworthy hand.
"Mortals," Malekith sneers, "Midgard's convergence will birth my dark reign."
Ethan descends, eyes steady. "Not today, Malekith. Earth's not your canvas."
Avengers' Perspectives in the Fight:
Ethan (Superman): Malekith gestures, reality fracturing—ice to magma, air to blades. Ethan's godlike speed dodges, but symbiotes swarm, claws testing his durability. He blasts them with heat vision. "You're tough, but I'm built different."
Tony (Iron Man): Repulsors shred symbiotes. "These things are like bad sushi!" Malekith warps Tony's HUD, but he recalibrates, blasting Aether-shields. "Hack my tech, elf? Rookie move."
Steve (Captain America): His shield arcs, smashing a frost beast. "Stay tight!" Malekith turns the ground to tar, but Steve leaps, shield cracking a symbiote. "We've faced worse."
Peter (Spider-Man): Webs snare symbiotes, Peter's agility weaving through demons. "You guys need a leash!" Malekith traps him in a void, but spider-sense guides him, webbing Malekith's arm. "Bad elf, no cookie!"
Laura (X-23): Her suit flares, claws slicing symbiotes. "Back off." Malekith warps her into a crystal maze, but she cuts free, snarling. "I've broken better cages." She slashes Malekith's shield, growling, "This is for Lily."
Natasha (Black Widow): She weaves through demons, tasers sparking. "Not my worst mission." Malekith's reality-shift traps her in darkness, but she triggers explosives, escaping. "Nice try, elf."
Clint (Hawkeye): Arrows pierce symbiotes. "Target practice." Malekith warps his aim, but Clint adjusts, hitting a symbiote's core. "Bullseye."
Thor, weakened, summons lightning, striking a Kronan. "Malekith, return my hammer!"
Malekith's Aether pulses, splitting the team—Ethan in a void, Laura in mirrors, Tony in a storm. Lily's precognition echoes in Ethan's mind: "Break Malekith's red heart!"
Epic Showdown:
Ethan bursts from the void, eyes blazing. "Your reign ends, Malekith!" He rockets at the elf, dodging Aether-warped spikes, and slams into Malekith's shield, the ground quaking.
Malekith snarls, reality bending—Ethan's cape turns to stone, but he rips free, strength unyielding. "You don't get to rewrite Earth!"
Tony's repulsors hammer symbiotes, Steve's shield dents Malekith's side, Peter's webs bind his legs, Laura's claws tear his defenses, Natasha's bombs stagger him, and Clint's arrow strikes his Aether-core.
Thor, staggering, summons lightning. "Malekith, your tyranny falls!"
Ethan extends his hand, vision piercing the Aether's chaotic frequencies. It's entropy incarnate, but energy nonetheless. He dives into Malekith, letting the Aether surge through him. His body strains, contorting, but he grits his teeth, forcing the Aether to resonate with his solar-charged cells.
Malekith screams. "No! You cannot—!"
The Aether tears from Malekith's chest, swirling around Ethan in a violent red storm. With a cry, he redirects it upward, through the Convergence's breach into the void. The energy vanishes.
Mjolnir's scars fade, its glow restored. Thor grabs it, lightning crackling. "My thanks, Kryptonian."
Malekith collapses, withered, symbiotes and creatures fleeing. Natasha seals the Aether's residual traces in a SHIELD container.
"Fury's new paperweight," Ethan says, exhaling.
Carter Farm – Dawn
The Avengers regroup, weary but resolute.
Tony stretches. "That elf owes me a new suit."
Laura wipes her claws. "He's lucky I didn't carve him up."
Peter jogs over, holding a burnt cookie. "So… we win, right? 'Cause I'm out of snacks."
Steve nods at Ethan. "You led us well."
Thor clasps Ethan's arm. "Midgard owes you, brother."
Lily tugs Ethan's cape, eyes glowing. "A star lady's watching."
Ethan links to Jor-El, who warns: "Malekith's ally, Faora, a Kryptonian, seeks the Aether with Kree allies to forge a new Krypton."
Ethan glances at the team. "Malekith's down, but Faora's got a Kree-Kryptonian sequel planned. Ready for round two?"
From the shadows, Faora watches, her gaze cold. Far above, the Aether lingers in the void, drawn toward something older… something hungrier...
