Chapter 40: The New Frontier

Author: MrLostLetter

The hum of the safehouse's systems filled the air, but it was distant—muted beneath the steady pulse Ethan now felt deep in his core. It wasn't the Codex's overwhelming energy, not like before.

This was... different.

Controlled.

But it was still there.

Ethan sat on the edge of the metal table, his pulse steady but... stronger. His hands flexed as he tested his strength, feeling the slight tremor that had nothing to do with fatigue.

The Codex hadn't disappeared.

It had adapted.

"Ethan..."

Lena's voice was softer now, filled with quiet concern. She stood close, her green eyes watching him carefully, her hand brushing lightly against his arm.

"Are you okay?"

Ethan's jaw clenched as he exhaled slowly, his mind still trying to process what had happened.

"I think so."

But even as he said the words, he wasn't entirely sure.

---

Dorian stood at the console, his cybernetic eye flickering as he scanned the residual data from the Core. His jaw was tight, his expression unreadable as streams of information poured across the holo-display.

"The Core's systems are offline," Dorian murmured, his voice steady but distant.

"But..."

Lena's brow furrowed, her gaze snapping to him.

"But what?"

Dorian's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing as he processed the last fragments of data.

"The Codex is still active," Dorian murmured, his tone grim.

Lena's breath caught, her eyes flashing toward Ethan.

"But Ethan severed the connection—"

"I did," Ethan interrupted softly, his jaw tightening as he stood up, his muscles still adjusting to the shift.

"But... it didn't matter."

---

Lena's eyes narrowed, her concern deepening.

"Ethan..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper now.

"What happened?"

Ethan's pulse quickened, the steady hum of the Codex vibrating just beneath the surface.

"I severed the link between the Codex and the Core," he murmured, his voice quieter now, almost... distant.

"But the Codex didn't... shut down."

Dorian's jaw clenched, his fingers moving quickly across the interface, his cybernetic eye processing the data faster than Ethan could keep up.

"It's not connected to the Core anymore," Dorian murmured, his brow furrowing deeper.

"It's... connected to you."

---

Ethan's breath caught, the weight of those words settling over him.

"What?"

Lena's hand brushed lightly against his, her eyes filled with quiet concern.

"I thought the Codex was..."

"Gone?" Ethan's jaw clenched, his pulse pounding harder.

"No."

He looked down at his hand, flexing his fingers as the pulse of the Codex resonated faintly through his skin.

"It's not gone."

Lena's eyes widened, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Ethan... what does that mean?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"I don't know."

---

Dorian's holo-pad beeped softly, the system's protocols shifting again, but this time...

There was no threat.

"It's stabilizing," Dorian murmured, his expression unreadable as he analyzed the data.

"But the Codex..."

His voice trailed off, his cybernetic eye flickering as he processed the last fragments.

"It's... integrating."

Ethan's pulse quickened.

"Integrating?"

Dorian's jaw clenched.

"The Codex isn't controlling you anymore, Ethan."

Ethan's breath caught, his heart pounding harder as Dorian's gaze met his.

"You're controlling it."

---

The room fell into a heavy silence, the weight of that revelation pressing down on all of them.

Lena's eyes flickered with quiet awe—and something else.

Fear.

"Ethan..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper, her grip on his arm tightening.

"What does that mean?"

Ethan's jaw clenched as he met her gaze, his pulse steady but stronger now.

"It means..."

His voice was quieter now, almost... distant.

"I'm not the same."

---

Lena's brow furrowed, her concern deepening.

"Not the same how?"

Ethan's eyes narrowed as he focused, feeling the pulse of the Codex echo through his veins—stronger, but... under his control.

For now.

"I can feel it," Ethan murmured softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"The Codex... it's still inside me."

Lena's breath caught.

"But it's not fighting me anymore."

Dorian's brow furrowed, his jaw clenched as he processed the implications.

"It's... adapting," Dorian murmured, his tone filled with quiet disbelief.

"It's not controlling you."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"No."

His gaze hardened as he met Dorian's eyes.

"I'm controlling it."

---

Lena's eyes searched his, her expression torn between awe and fear.

"Ethan..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper now, her hand brushing lightly against his cheek.

"What does that mean?"

Ethan's pulse pounded harder, the weight of that question pressing down on him.

"It means..."

His jaw clenched, his voice quieter now.

"I don't know what I am anymore."

---

Dorian's holo-pad beeped softly again, the data stabilizing.

"But whatever you are..." Dorian's voice was quieter now, but the weight behind it was undeniable.

"You're not just human anymore."

Ethan's jaw clenched, his pulse steady but... different.

"I can feel it," Ethan murmured softly.

"The Codex... it's a part of me now."

Lena's eyes filled with quiet concern, her hand brushing gently against his.

"Can you... control it?"

Ethan's jaw tightened, his gaze hardening.

"For now."

---

Dorian's holo-pad flashed again, but this time...

The data was different.

"The Core's offline," Dorian murmured, his jaw tight.

"But the Codex..."

His voice trailed off, his cybernetic eye flickering as he processed the new information.

"It's... evolving."

Ethan's pulse quickened.

"Evolving?"

Dorian's jaw clenched.

"Whatever the Codex was before..."

His gaze met Ethan's, his expression grim.

"It's something else now."

---

Ethan's jaw tightened as he flexed his fingers, the pulse of the Codex humming softly beneath his skin.

"I can feel it," Ethan murmured softly, his voice quieter now.

"Stronger. Faster."

Lena's eyes filled with quiet concern, her grip on his hand tightening.

"Ethan..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper now.

"What does that mean?"

Ethan's jaw clenched, his pulse steady but stronger than ever before.

"It means..."

His gaze hardened as he looked toward the holo-interface, the weight of the unknown pressing down on him.

"This is just the beginning."
