Chapter 39 - Test to See Who’s Best

Astolfo watched as his classmates completed the 50-meter dash. They showcased some very interesting abilities. One had pipes protruding from his legs that somehow made him super fast. Another seemed to be part frog or toad, while yet another sported a belt that shot lasers. There were many more fascinating powers demonstrated by his classmates, but he didn't have much time to analyze them. His turn came up much faster than he expected.

Standing next to Bakugo, the Pomeranian-like explosion enthusiast, Astolfo tried to think of a fun and helpful way to use his brand-new quirk for this test.

Eventually, time ran out, and the timer started as Bakugo blasted forward. Astolfo, deciding to just wing it, activated his quirk. Two barrels sprouted from his back as he took off. However, he quickly lost his balance and fell over. That didn't stop his momentum, though; he slid face-first across the finish line.

(Astolfo) Quirk:

Glitter Bang. This quirk allows the user to grow gun-like barrels across their body. These barrels release a highly pressurized burst of glitter. The glitter comes in two currently known forms: normal powder-like glitter, which tends to get everywhere, and sticky, glue-like glitter. While it may not be powerful offensively, it is extremely useful for restraining and distracting enemies.

Astolfo slowly pushed himself up off the ground. His physical stats, thanks to being a Servant, made him much stronger and more resilient than the average man, even if those abilities had decreased somewhat due to his current younger body.

"Wow! That was amazing!" yelled a girl who could be best described as 'pink' as she excitedly ran over and glomped Astolfo.

"Thanks!" Astolfo replied with a grin. "I think it's pretty awesome too! But I'm still getting used to it."

He looked behind him to see a trail of pink sparkles leading to the finish line.

"I'm Mina Ashido! Want to be Pink Buddies with me?" Mina said in a jovial tone as she seemed to vibrate in place.

Astolfo nodded; the more friends he had, the more his bubbly personality would flow to the surface. Being de-aged had led to his more conservative traits being more prominent. It wasn't just his physical body that had been reset; his mental maturity had also changed. He was now physically and mentally a 15-year-old boy, retaining memories of his future and past adventures as a paladin of Charlemagne.

The first test was the grip strength test at 50 meters. Astolfo got the highest score, even with reduced stats—after all, a human from the age of gods is much stronger than a modern-day human. Next was the side steps, where Astolfo did okay; it wasn't anything to write home about. The only impressive thing, in his opinion, was what the purple ball could do with his well, balls. Physical strength wasn't particularly remarkable, as most heroic spirits are far stronger than what he displayed. The side steps weren't the most flashy either.

The next test was the ball throw, and Astolfo simply grew a barrel, chucked the ball inside, and fired it like a cannon. He assumed he probably could've thrown it farther, but it was still a pretty good score, just barely beating the exploding kid.

The last test was a stamina test. The class was told to run around the track until they couldn't run anymore. This resulted in a black-haired girl riding a scooter and Astolfo running around the track for an hour until Aizawa got bored and announced they could stop.

Once the test ended, Aizawa used UA's advanced technology to project the scores and everyone's placements.

(This ranking is based entirely on my personal opinion of how I envision they would score.)

A blonde-haired kid with a black lightning bolt in his hair fell to his knees in despair. The floating clothes beside him bent down, slowly trying to comfort him. Mordred, standing next to Aizawa, covered her mouth to stifle her laughter. She knew Aizawa wouldn't expel... what was his name again? She glanced at the screen before nodding. Denki! Of course, Aizawa wouldn't expel Denki.

Aizawa gathered the attention of all of Class 1-A. "Most of you did your best, and that's what this school likes to see. Because of that, I will not be expelling anyone."

The class collectively sighed in relief. Aizawa continued, "The explosion was a lie. It was a logical test to force you to try your hardest. Some of you didn't, and those students I will be watching closely. If they can't get their act together, I will expel them for real this time."

The class was experiencing a form of whiplash. First, there was relief that they wouldn't be expelled, then came the dread of the possibility if they didn't try hard enough. Yet, a few students still didn't take Aizawa's warnings seriously.

Aizawa looked at Mordred and said, "Go and observe the cleaning bot as it repairs the sports field." Mordred nodded before walking off toward a shed near the bleachers.

Aizawa then turned to his class and said, "Your schedules and other materials are in the classroom. After you change out of your gym wear, go pick them up. Class dismissed." With that, he walked away.

Most of the class didn't leave immediately. They wanted to wait for their Senpai to ask her questions about the school, while others simply wanted to chat or brag about their scores. Meanwhile, several strange-looking robots exited the shed and began repairing the field—sweeping up glitter, flattening out the dirt, seeding the grass, and fixing the track, which had suffered quite a bit from the earlier explosion.

The class stood there, watching the robots at work. Soon, all the robots returned to the shed, and Mordred walked out.

"Oh, you guys are still here? Do you need something?" she asked, looking at the seven students who remained.

"Yeah, was sensei really serious about expelling people?" asked Ochaco. "Momo seems to think he's bluffing."

Momo looked a bit indignant. "It's not that I think he's bluffing; I know he is. This is just an elaborate ploy to make us work harder so he can report to his colleagues about how good of a teacher he is."

"Yikes," Mordred thought. "I hope she's just upset about being wrong earlier and doesn't truly believe that."

"Okay, let's calm down a little. To answer your question, yes, he's completely serious about expelling people. There currently isn't a Class 2-A because Aizawa-sensei expelled the majority of the class. The four or so remaining students were just moved to Class 2-B. And that was only on the first day."
