Ethan didn't miss a beat. "I have my ways," he said, the corner of his mouth twitching like he was holding back a smirk.
Jaime snorted. "Creepy, but points for consistency." She turned in her seat, giving Sophia a look that screamed are you hearing this?
Sophia was staring out the window, chewing on the inside of her cheek. Her thoughts were louder than the hum of the engine.
"No" she finally let out this is just ...new for me
The car eased to a stop in front of their building. Jaime climbed out first. "Alright, lovebirds, don't take too long having your dramatic rooftop moment or whatever. I need Sophia inside before I spiral and order three pizzas."
She disappeared into the building, and the car door shut with a dull thud.
Sophia lingered.
"You don't remember me," Ethan said suddenly. Not a question.
She looked at him again, more carefully this time. "Should I?"
He hesitated, then shook his head like he was walking something back. "No. Doesn't matter."
She narrowed her eyes slightly. "That's the second time tonight you've said something cryptic and then pulled back."
Ethan gave a small, dry smile. "Old habit. I used to talk too much."
"Now you just talk in puzzles."
He looked at her, really looked, like he was debating saying something. But instead, he just said, "Goodnight, Sophia."
She didn't say it back—not right away. She stepped out of the car, the cold air biting a little at her skin. But before closing the door, she leaned in slightly.
"Good night" she said , voice quiet
Then she shut the door.
Ethan watched the building door close behind her.
Jack looked at him in the mirror. "Should've told her."
