AK now stood alone, without support. Though this wasn't new for him, something about this moment felt different. Being cornered at the workplace is one of the worst nightmares for any employee—and for AK, who was on a secret mission, the added pressure threatened his mental stability.
"If the captain is already aware of these bottles," AK muttered to himself, "what else can I do? I'm new to this company. Usually, I follow the rules strictly, but it really depends on the management I work under. If the management allows this, then I'll adapt."
The Chief Engineer responded with a smirk, "Ahhh, it's a good thing you didn't cause any trouble, Chief. Otherwise, it would've created chaos, and working conditions here would become difficult."
AK sensed the rudeness hidden in the Chief Engineer's words. It wasn't advice—it was a warning.
Just then, Captain Abraham entered the room and asked, "What happened here?"
The Chief Engineer explained the entire situation. After listening, the captain turned to AK. "Didn't the previous Chief Officer inform you about this?"
"No, sir. Not about this," AK replied calmly.
Captain Abraham nodded. "Alright, Chief. It's like this here. Don't worry—no problems will arise. I'll take care of everything. People only drink during party times, and even then, within limits. You know, a bit of enjoyment is part of a sailor's life, right?"
AK responded, "Yes, sir," though his heart wasn't in it.
The captain dismissed the situation. "Everyone, return to work. What's the status of the cargo?"
The 2nd Officer replied, "Sir, it's break time now. Loading will resume in one hour."
"Okay. What about the lashing? As per the new plan, make sure it's done properly."
Bosun, standing nearby, stepped in. "Yes, sir. We're following the new lashing plan."
"Good," the captain said. "Bosun, make sure the lashings are tight and everything's secure. Chief, take a round when you get time. Ensure all is in order."
"Yes, sir. Will do," AK replied.
Captain Abraham then left the ship's off
ice and returned to his cabin.
