Chapter 85 - Chapter 85: The Calm Before the Storm

The atmosphere around the academy had become dense with anticipation as the Grand Tournament drew closer. There was a palpable excitement in the air, mixed with a hint of tension. Ethan could feel the weight of the upcoming event on his shoulders. He had faced many challenges before, but this tournament was unlike any other. It wasn't just a test of skill—it was a battle for prestige, for recognition, and for the opportunity to prove that he was more than just a "zero" in a world full of powerful Awakened.

Ethan had been training relentlessly, as had his teammates, the Ashmore twins. Lilian and Vivian had proven time and again that their synergy in combat was beyond impressive, and Ethan knew that if he wanted to keep up with them, he would have to push himself even harder. However, as much as the tournament loomed over him, it wasn't just his training that had him on edge.

He couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to change. The closer the tournament came, the more unsettled he became. The bond he shared with the twins had been growing, and though they hadn't openly discussed it, Ethan knew that something more was forming between them. It wasn't just about fighting together anymore—it was something deeper, something he wasn't sure how to navigate.

It wasn't just the twins who had been affecting him either. There were others. Karen Lore, the priestess who had joined their group not long ago, had also been becoming more and more of a fixture in Ethan's life. Her gentle nature and calming presence were a stark contrast to the fiery personalities of the twins, and Ethan found himself drawn to her in a way he hadn't expected. She was different—her aura was one of quiet strength and grace, a stark reminder of the emotional toll her life as a priestess had taken. Despite the weight of her responsibilities, she had remained kind, patient, and understanding, which made her presence comforting.

As Ethan sat in the academy's courtyard, surrounded by students who were preparing for the tournament, he found himself lost in thought. His gaze wandered across the vast training grounds, where combatants were already sparring, testing their limits. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm, golden hue across the landscape, but even that warmth couldn't shake the growing tension in his chest.

He was no stranger to the feeling. He had experienced it countless times in the past—before battles, before difficult choices, before every time something significant was about to happen. But this time, it was different. There was something about the impending tournament, something about the people who surrounded him, that made him uneasy.

It was then that Lilian's voice broke through his thoughts.

"Ethan!" she called, jogging over to him with that ever-present mischievous grin. "Are you ready for the big day?"

Ethan blinked, shaking himself out of his reverie. He couldn't deny that Lilian's presence always had a way of snapping him back to reality. She was the embodiment of energy, a force of nature that never seemed to slow down.

"I'm as ready as I'll ever be," Ethan replied, offering a half-smile. "But it feels like there's something more going on here than just a tournament."

Lilian raised an eyebrow, her grin turning into a knowing smirk. "You're thinking too much again, Ethan. Don't worry about things you can't control. Just focus on what's in front of you."

Ethan chuckled softly. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm just... not used to all this attention. It feels like everyone's watching me."

Vivian, who had been quietly observing them from a distance, now approached as well. Her usual calm demeanor was slightly more intense today. She seemed to sense the underlying tension in the air just as Ethan did. "It's natural to feel that way," she said, her voice soft yet firm. "This tournament is a big deal, not just for us, but for the academy as a whole. People are watching because they want to see who will rise to the top."

Ethan glanced over at her, meeting her gaze for a brief moment. Her eyes, filled with quiet understanding, made him feel... grounded. She had always been the more introspective twin, the one who read between the lines and noticed things others didn't. He appreciated her presence more than he could put into words.

"I know," Ethan said, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "But this time... I don't think it's just about skill. There's something more to this tournament, something I can't put my finger on."

Lilian let out a lighthearted laugh, brushing off his concerns. "You worry too much. Just remember one thing—no matter what happens, we've got your back, Ethan. You're not in this alone."

Ethan's heart warmed at her words, but before he could respond, another voice interrupted them.

"Ethan."

He turned to see Karen Lore approaching, her expression serious but gentle as always. Her silvery-white hair shimmered in the fading sunlight, and her soft green eyes locked onto his with an intensity that made his stomach flutter. Despite her calm exterior, Ethan had come to know that Karen carried a great deal of inner strength. She had proven it time and again in their battles, though she often preferred to stay in the background, offering support rather than taking the spotlight.

Karen stopped a few paces away from him, her hands folded in front of her. "I wanted to talk to you about something."

Ethan gave her a warm smile, though he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease building in the pit of his stomach. "What's on your mind, Karen?"

She hesitated for a moment, her gaze flickering to the side before returning to meet his. "I know the tournament is important to you, Ethan. But... I want you to remember that you don't have to carry everything on your own."

Ethan furrowed his brow. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that we're all here for you," Karen said softly. "You don't have to shoulder the weight of this alone. You've always been there for us, and now it's our turn to support you."

Her words struck Ethan more deeply than he expected. He had always prided himself on being self-sufficient, on pushing through challenges on his own. But in that moment, he realized how much the people around him had come to mean to him. He wasn't just fighting for himself anymore. He was fighting for them, too.

"I know," Ethan said, his voice quieter now, more sincere. "But sometimes, it feels like... I don't deserve this support. I'm just a guy with no mana, no rank."

Karen shook her head gently. "You have more than enough. And we're all here because we believe in you."

Ethan swallowed hard, feeling the weight of her words settle in his chest. He had always doubted himself, always believed that he wasn't enough. But here, with the people who cared about him, he realized that maybe, just maybe, he was more than enough.

"Thank you," he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Karen offered a soft, reassuring smile. "You're welcome, Ethan. Now, let's focus on the tournament. We'll face whatever comes together."

Before Ethan could reply, a sudden loud voice boomed from the center of the courtyard.

"Alright, everyone! Gather round!"

Ethan turned to see Professor Harrow, one of the academy's senior instructors, standing atop a raised platform. His voice carried effortlessly across the crowd as he raised his hand, signaling for everyone's attention.

"The time has come," Professor Harrow continued, his stern face breaking into a grin. "The Grand Tournament is nearly upon us, and it's time to officially begin the first round of matchups! I expect all of you to give it your all. Remember, this tournament is not just about winning—it's about proving who you are. So, get ready to show us what you've got!"

A wave of excitement rippled through the crowd, and Ethan could feel the energy surge around him. His heart began to race. It was time. The tournament was about to begin.

As he turned to face the Ashmore twins and Karen, he couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie that transcended words. No matter what happened in the upcoming days, they would face it together.

And for the first time in a long while, Ethan felt like he was ready to face whatever the world had in store for him.
