Chapter 59: The feeling of Betrayal
"He betrayed my trust," Jake muttered under his breath as he stormed toward the camp. His boots hit the gravel like gunshots. His fists were clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. "What kind of friend does that? He was supposed to be my brother."
"Jake—Jake, please just listen to me!" I hurried after him, practically tripping over myself.
He didn't stop. Didn't even look at me.
"Listen to you?" he barked, voice rising. "Why should I listen to you, Sidney? I'm pretty sure he charmed you with that stupid soldier's aura. He's no good. When he's done with you, he'll drop you like a damn mission file."
I halted, stunned. The accusation stung—deeply. Carl wasn't perfect, but I knew he wasn't that. Not with me. Not after everything we'd been through together. I opened my mouth to defend him, but the words collapsed in my throat. Jake wouldn't hear them anyway. Not right now.
