Chapter 71 - Chapter 71 Montague & Capulet (3)

North Balcony, Montague Residence. Golden dusk.

Romeo stood with his back to the setting sun, dressed in an unusual formal attire. Before him stood Lady Vivienne Capulet—elegant in her black gown, like a shadow of the night dancing with the last light of the day. Inside her heart, Vivienne felt a profound burden of sorrow, haunted by memories of her lost husband in the family feud, leaving wounds that remained unhealed.

"Romeo," she said, gentle yet cold, "I come not as your mother's enemy, nor as the guardian of Juliet's grave." In her mind, she recalled the moment her husband was slain, a never-ending battle that claimed so many lives. "I come as a mother who understands the deep sorrow of loss and the danger of this hatred."

Romeo lowered his gaze slightly, clenching his fists. "But what do you come as, Lady Vivienne?"

She offered a faint smile, though pain lingered beneath it. "As a mother... willing to trade a crown of land for a crown of heart." She sensed the tension between them, a feeling of guilt stirring within her soul. Deep down, she wondered if she could sacrifice everything to save the youth from the same hatred.

She presented a small crystal—containing an image of the Calestrium mine sparkling from the air, viewed from the height of a bird. Surrounding it, floating glyphs of magic signified the blessing of a rare magical energy. "Grant us permission to mine again, and this mine will belong to two families. Not just the Capulet family, but... Capulet-Montague." She felt a fleeting hope, only to be overshadowed by the doubts that plagued her mind.

Romeo gazed at the crystal. Then Vivienne looked into his eyes—sharp, beautiful, and cruel in its truth. "Marry Juliet. Not as lovers, but as protectors of the land. As a symbol binding two dynasties." She bit her lip, struggling to hold back tears that were about to spill. In her heart, she wrestled between the desire to protect her family and the unbearable pain of losing her husband.

Romeo fell silent. Then his voice emerged, soft and cracking:

"And what if I refuse? What if our love doesn't want to be bound by the chains of land and blood?" At that moment, Lady Vivienne felt the uncertainty stir within her. The blend of her past and future made her head spin, and she understood that every decision carried dreadful consequences. All she could do was hope, somehow, to avoid the same tragedy that had marred her own life.

Vivienne stepped closer, her voice like a prayer laced with threats. She recalled the dark night when her loving husband was killed due to the hatred between their families. Each day, the ache of his absence burned fiercely, and now all that tension had coalesced into a profound heartbreak.

"Then the mine will fall into the hands of Gaia... or Earth... or a third party that speaks of your history without naming you. You will be forgotten. And Juliet will live in a world where her love is deemed treachery, not unity." With those words, she felt the unspoken weight of the sacrifice she had to endure to end this cycle of suffering.

The evening breeze swept through the air. The crystal lingered between them, trembling gently. In those fleeting moments, Vivienne sensed every pulse of her pain—an ever-present reminder that genuine love could tragically perish within the boundless spiral of hatred.

Romeo raised his hand—not to take the crystal, but to hold back his tears. Behind his youthful face was a wager far greater than mere love: the choice between his heart and the future of his people. Vivienne observed the struggle etched on his features. She appreciated the difficulty of this choice, how much he might wish to say that everything would be alright, yet she knew that would be a lie.

She felt the weight of all the generations that surrounded her. Every piece of land she stepped on in Verona was drenched in blood and tears—stories and histories that ended tragically, now demanding another sacrifice in the form of an unwanted marriage. The call to reconcile two souls in that emptiness ensnared her, yet uncertainty gnawed at the depths of her heart.

Vivienne noticed the doubt in Romeo's eyes, and she gently touched his shoulder, saying, "Romeo, remember, we are all products of the past. But we also have a choice to shape the future." Filled with hope despite her shattered heart, she fought against the doubts that threatened her, realizing that her actions now could create the change she desired.

Romeo gazed at the sky, lost in a multitude of hopes. "What kind of future can there be if it is built on lies?" The uncertainty expressed by Romeo echoed within him, reigniting the inner turmoil that had long been dormant. He attempted to mask his pain with rational arguments, yet at the same time, memories of his lost husband reminded him of the consequences of these decisions.

"Not lies," Vivienne answered firmly, even though her heart trembled behind her words. In her mind, images of her husband lying lifeless due to family disputes flashed through her thoughts. "This is for the survival of our family. Love can grow from seeds sown with hope, even if it begins with an agreement. Our dark history must come to an end, and it is only we who can achieve that."

He looked again at the crystal that now sparkled brighter, as if responding to the doubts in his heart. Was all of this worth the sacrifices he had made? "Does Juliet agree with all this?" he asked, his voice trembling as he fought to contain his anxiety.

Vivienne responded with a gentle, empathetic gaze, though deep within her heart lay profound pain. "Juliet may not understand now, but time will reveal that the love born from this agreement is strong. We will teach her to see the beauty within it." She recalled how her husband had once disagreed with their choices, and how, ultimately, it all became too late.

There, under the twilight, Romeo felt a powerful wave of emotion. Such immense love should not be constrained by tradition and power. He longed for the freedom to love, not to be a political pawn.

"Lady Vivienne," he said, his voice beginning to firm. "What you offer still feels like a trap. If my life is bound to a marriage not grounded in true love, then I would prefer to die rather than live for wealth and ambition."

Vivienne appeared shocked by Romeo's firmness, but within her lay a bitterness. For the first time, she felt not just the hatred inherited from their families but also the courage and conviction of a young man bold enough to challenge his fate. She yearned for the past—a time when love was a destiny capable of conquering all. However, perhaps saving the next generation was more important than saving herself. That single statement shook her soul more than she would admit.

"Romeo, you know this is not just about you and Juliet. It's about the generations to come. We do not want our children to repeat the same cycle. Love doesn't have to be in cliché; sometimes, love needs to endure and adapt," Vivienne's voice trembled as she recalled how she had witnessed her husband become trapped in family feuds, never able to love freely.

"But true love is not something that should be forced, Vivienne. It needs to grow naturally, like a beanstalk in fertile soil. Should we plant the seeds of hatred in the same ground and hope that love will flourish?" he replied passionately.

The twilight light streaming across the balcony seemed to bear witness to their exchange of words. In her heart, Vivienne felt the layers of defense she had built up around herself begin to crack. Memories of her husband, lost due to the animosity between their families, enveloped her soul. She yearned to mold her child into a leader, yet she also realized that she might be stifling their freedom, just as it had happened to her.

"In the end, we are all trying to confront this dark legacy," she replied sincerely, her soft voice revealing the emotional weight she had long carried. "We must fight against fate. And if marriage is the only way to save our family, then that is the path I will take." For a fleeting moment, a longing to avoid repeating past mistakes overwhelmed her mind, but on the other hand, there was a desire to see her child happy.

However, as he uttered those words, Romeo felt that something larger was at play. He longed for the freedom to love unconditionally. He wanted to be more than just a pawn in this grand game. Vivienne sensed that longing, and in a moment of vulnerability, she felt her heart torn between hope and fear.

"We will not lose, Vivienne. We just need to be brave enough to do what is right," his voice trembled, emotional yet courageous. "There is a choice—not just between two houses, but within your own heart."

Time seemed to pause for a moment, as if the universe held its breath. Vivienne felt challenged, as if awakening from an illusion that ensnared her. She contemplated how her dark past, when her husband was killed in the feud between their families and Romeo's, haunted her. "What do you mean?" she asked, taken aback, as she tried to steady her swirling thoughts.

"You can choose to be a bridge between this hatred. You can let go of everything that has been stored inside and begin to write a new history, free of resentment and pain."

Vivienne fell silent, needing time to process his words. On one hand, she felt trapped between loyalty to her family and the haunting memories of her missing husband, ensnared in this chaos. On the other hand, she began to question the very foundations of her beliefs. Her voice faltered as she contemplated the decisions that had led her to this point.

Romeo continued, "You can be a disruptor of tradition. There will be a path for us all. The courage to envision a new future can only arise from loving one another, not from hatred."

"Romeo, that is dangerous. The stakes are incredibly high," she replied, her voice trembling as the fear of another loss crept back into her heart.

"And every meaningful progress will always be difficult. A visible path is never the one we choose. If we leave this dark legacy behind us, the stars in the sky will shine brighter for our children," he answered with conviction. Deep down, Vivienne felt ambivalence—caught between new dreams and the persistent shadows of her unresolved past.

Vivienne fell silent, her heart battling between hope and fear. Where hatred once burned fiercely, she now felt a spark of hope. Since her husband's death in the feud between their families, the trauma haunted every decision she made. "Romeo," she said finally, her voice trembling, "I will consider what you have said."

"From here, from this balcony, we can challenge everything. Let's prove to the world that love can change destiny. Not just once or twice, but forever," he said, with a fire of determination igniting within him. However, Vivienne felt a weight in her heart, reminded of the loss of her husband, taken away by the same hatred.

"I don't understand it all, but my soul is stirred," Vivienne replied, tears flowing down her cheeks. Inside her, a voice whispered, questioning whether to take the risk again after all that was lost. "If I could change this course, would you be willing to do it?"

Romeo responded without hesitation, "As long as there is hope, as long as there is a heart that loves, I am willing. Let us be a light in this darkness." Vivienne looked at him, feeling the warm yet faint glimmer of hope, but the fear of losing again slowly crept into her mind.

As night fell, it enveloped them in a blanket of peace and vulnerability. Outside, the world remained noisy with the feud between two families, yet within their hearts, a voice whispered—a voice of hope. Standing on the brink of change, both realized that with courage, love could be more than mere words. Love could be a force, a bridge to a better future. Vivienne, who was usually strong, now felt a deep vulnerability within; she faced the choice between love and the trauma of her past that still haunted her.
