Grandpa Harper couldn't help but laugh when he saw Kevin carrying groceries. He hadn't expected his grandson to accompany Jessie to the market, which seemed completely out of character.
But it's good this way. It was Kevin himself who wanted to pretend to be poor to test Jessie, so this could be seen as experiencing life.
"Yes, we bought a lot of groceries." Jessie smiled.
Though she had only met Grandpa Harper a few times, his warmth quickly made Jessie feel at ease.
Grandpa Harper patted Jessie on the back of her hand. "Jessie, Kevin is always busy with work, so he's not familiar with things like this. It's good for you to take him out more. Buy whatever you want, and let Kevin pay, understand?"
Kevin, standing nearby, was visibly exasperated, as if cartoon stress lines were about to appear above his head.
Was he really the biological grandchild? He certainly didn't feel like it.
