Jacob's Shiny Charmander was truly special. First, its coloration was distinctive—instead of the usual orange-red, this Shiny Charmander was golden. Its final evolved form, Charizard, would be black in color—the famous Black Charizard.
Second, its combat abilities were unique. This little Charmander possessed the Solar Power ability, enhancing its special attack on sunny days while gradually draining its health. However, most of the moves it had inherited were physical attacks, with only Ember and Ancient Power being special moves. This puzzled Jacob about how to train this particular Charmander.
Finally, it had an exceptional personality. This Charmander's temperament differed completely from his other Pokémon. Noibat was clingy and docile, and Grovyle was serious and calm. But this Charmander's personality could be described in one word: aggressive.
Though only two days old, this little Charmander had already shown remarkable aggression and warlike tendencies, often challenging Noibat. Besides its trainer Jacob, it refused to obey orders from anyone else—quite rare, as starter Pokémon are generally docile and considered most suitable for novice trainers.
It was truly unusual to find a Charmander this aggressive. This temperament ultimately convinced Jacob to have his Shiny Charmander pursue a mixed attacking style, focusing on both physical and special attacks.
The students nearby had also noticed this Shiny Charmander, their eyes filled with surprise. Shiny Pokémon were extremely rare and valuable regardless of location, though no one could tell the potential of this particular Shiny Charmander.
"Char!" The Charmander roared at the people around it, its eyes containing a clear warning as it glared fiercely at everyone.
The instructor's eyes also showed a hint of surprise. "A Charmander... no wonder you plan to train it as your trump card."
"Your little Charmander has quite the temperament," she observed, clearly noticing Charmander's difficult personality.
Hearing her words, Charmander turned its head toward her and stared at the Noivern by her side, its face showing a strong fighting spirit. Only Jacob's restraining presence kept it in check, though it still maintained a provocative expression.
"Yes, a bit," Jacob acknowledged. He certainly recognized that Charmander wasn't particularly friendly, but he didn't consider this negative. On the contrary, its ferocious personality was perfectly suited for battle, as long as it followed commands.
"Let me explain the specific courses," she continued. "Generally, mornings are for physical and combat training. You should start with physical conditioning, and when that's nearly complete, you can apply for combat training to gain practical experience. In the Secret Realm, you can request sparring partners of various types at any time, provided no one has applied before you—otherwise, you'll need to wait your turn."
"Afternoons focus on energy training, primarily developing your Pokémon's mastery of energy and resistance to various energy types. You can select specific energy types for targeted training."
"Evenings are free time. You can go home or battle your classmates."
"In the Secret Realm, Monday through Friday is training time, and every Saturday is for move tutoring. Don't miss that day—you can learn special moves then, though additional fees apply. Sunday is the only rest day of the week, which you can arrange as you wish. Finally, my name is Nina. You should have heard of me. I'm the head instructor of your training class for now, and I also teach the physical training course."
"Any other questions?"
"No," Jacob shook his head.
"You may begin physical training with your Pokémon now," she said. "By the way, your Pokémon are much weaker than the others. You'll need to invest more time and energy in their training. Hard work can compensate for disadvantages. One last thing—if you need any energy cubes, inform the staff in advance and they'll deliver them to you. Of course, you'll need to pay for those yourself."
"Understood."
...
After finishing her instructions, she no longer paid attention to Jacob. With thirty-one students in the training class, she couldn't possibly focus all her attention on him alone.
Jacob was actually relieved by this. Having someone constantly watching would have made him uncomfortable. Besides, there were numerous training implements in the training area, and he needed time to explore them.
"This is a flight weight pack, specifically designed for Flying-type Pokémon to train weight-bearing during flight. Let's give it to Noibat."
Jacob picked up a flight weight pack and secured it to Noibat. These weren't cheap—they were specially designed to develop a Pokémon's flying ability. The pack could adapt to various flying Pokémon body sizes and allowed weight adjustments to meet different training needs. Importantly, when a flying Pokémon couldn't bear the weight anymore, it would trigger an automatic weight reduction system to prevent accidents.
Jacob first set the flight weight to 5kg, about half of Noibat's weight. The sudden increase immediately slowed Noibat's flight.
"Can you still manage?"
Jacob observed Noibat's flight pattern for a while and found that although slower, it remained relatively stable. So he added another 5kg to Noibat's load. Now the weight equaled Noibat's own body weight.
"Come on!"
The substantial weight immediately made flying difficult for Noibat, and its speed decreased further, but Jacob knew this still wasn't Noibat's limit. Under normal circumstances, Noibat could catch prey weighing 1 to 1.5 times its own body weight.
Noibat flapped its wings with difficulty, giving Jacob a tearful look. It made soft "noi" and "bat" sounds, affectionately rubbing against Jacob's arm as if begging him to reduce the weight and remove the flight pack.
Jacob looked at Noibat and clenched his teeth. He was truly far behind the others and felt pressure from his peers.
Everyone was preparing for the College Cup. Each of these trainers had at least one Lord-level Pokémon, and several had Pseudo-legendary specimens. Against such competition, Jacob had virtually no chance of winning.
Therefore, if Jacob didn't train intensively, there would be no way to catch up: "Noibat, hang in there. Whether it's you, Grovyle, Charmander, or me—we all need to give everything we've got."
While encouraging Noibat, Jacob added another 5kg of weight. This increase doubled Noibat's flying difficulty—its speed dropped sharply, and it could barely control its direction, but it still gritted its teeth and persevered.
Though not yet at Noibat's absolute limit, Jacob felt this was sufficient. After all, the weight pack needed to be worn for extended periods.
"Okay, that's enough. Keep it up, Noibat. Once you've adapted to flying with weight, we'll work on strengthening your claws and bite force."
Noibat and its evolved form, Noivern, were actually more special attack oriented. Their physical attack methods were limited, primarily concentrated in wings, claws, teeth, and tail—corresponding to moves like Wing Attack, Dragon Claw, Crunch, and Dragon Tail respectively.
However, Noibat's tail was still very short, so it couldn't learn tail-related moves yet. Only after evolving into Noivern could it begin training its tail abilities. Therefore, Noibat's training mainly focused on wings, claws, and teeth.
The flight weight pack would train wing-related abilities, leaving claws and teeth as Noibat's remaining training areas. There were no shortcuts for developing these skills. Just like practicing boxing, they could only improve through repeated practice—no shortcuts existed.
If it doesn't work once, try ten times. If ten times isn't enough, try a hundred. If a hundred isn't enough, try a thousand!
"You can do it, Noibat."
After continuously encouraging Noibat, Jacob turned his attention to arranging training for Grovyle.
