Sean approached Skye just as she was about to take a bite of her food. Skye gave Sean a lazy look. "What is it now? Still want to talk about the job you're offering? If so, stay away from me! I'm not interested in any kind of partnership you're proposing," said Skye, her expression clearly showing how annoyed she was to be facing Sean this early in the morning.
Yesterday, Sean's words were so demeaning to her. Skye was really happy just meeting with Sean. Sean was her helper after being betrayed by her best friend. There was no one to help her anymore. Sean became the one who helped her so often, she felt like she had a place to take refuge even if it wasn't completely.
"Please, help me," Sean said pleadingly, making Skye frown. A Sean, asking for help to put on such a sad face? Somehow, Skye felt strange about Sean's attitude.
From the beginning, she met Sean. Sean was a cold person. Until last night's incident made Skye realize that Sean was not that good of a person. "Why did you ask me for help?" asked Skye, exhaling heavily.
Sean wanted to answer, but if he answered, the reason he chose Skye was because Skye needed money. That reason would definitely make Skye angry. "I don't know, just wanted you," Sean replied.
"Weird," Skye said, and then she left.
She actually wanted to help, not because of what Sean was offering. Seeing Sean's tired face made her want to help. However, hearing Sean's answer made her have to think many times to accept. Somehow Sean's answer sounded like a lie.
Sean closed his eyes, he clenched his hands tightly. He exhaled his breath roughly. It was enough, he couldn't afford to be gentle. Who was Skye to turn down his offer? He could always get his clients to agree to his offers of cooperation. Only a poor girl and a college kid who could go to college because of a scholarship would dare to reject him. He wouldn't allow it.
"Aren't you being chased by debt collectors? Aren't you tired of running from them? Not to mention that, if they catch you, they'll beat you up. With that skinny body of yours, you could die from their blows," said Sean, making Skye stop in her tracks.
Sean smiled wryly, he would win. Skye would agree to work with him. However, he was wrong, Skye walked back without saying anything. Sean clenched his fists tightly, his jaw hardening as he was furious. It was an insult to him to be rejected by Skye.
"You won't get it," said a man, making Sean now stare at the man who just spoke.
When he saw who was talking, Sean was about to leave, but the man said. "You'd be better off marrying Issabel. She's a much better woman than that cursed girl. You'll never find happiness if you marry her," said the man—none other than Jackob.
Sean turned around and, without saying a word, landed a punch straight to Jackob's face. He absolutely hated what Jackob had just said. A cursed child? There's no such thing as a cursed child in this world. If having a child makes his life feel like a mess, then the fault lies within themselves.
Without saying anything, Sean walked away. Jackob held his numb cheek as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. "Damn it!" he swore and then spat out the blood.
He got up from his fallen position, got out of there, and was going to make it up to his daughter and tell Skye to get out of Sean's life, or, if necessary, die.
Jackob had arrived at his daughter's campus. His eyes locked onto Skye, who was walking alone. Without wasting a second, he strode toward her, tension simmering beneath every step. Skye flinched at the sight of her father, pain flashing in her eyes for a brief second. Still, she said nothing. With a quiet breath, she moved to the side, trying to pass him—as if his presence alone was too much to bear.
Jackob didn't like Skye's response. "Come with me," he ordered, his voice firm and demanding.
Skye kept walking, ignoring her father's words. It was her father himself who had told her to stay away and not bother him. Why was her father coming to see her now? She has nothing to do with Sean. If he wants her to stay away from Sean, he should just ask Sean to stay away from her. She already rejected Sean, but he's the one who keeps insisting.
"Dare you just leave?" asked Jackob in a cold tone of voice.
"Come with me or I'll humiliate you here." Jackob continued in a cold and warning tone.
Skye finally complied and followed her father's lead, rather than cause a scene and get a warning from the campus. She didn't want the commotion to cause her to lose her scholarship.
Already in a quiet place, Jackob looked at Skye with his angry gaze. "I told you, stay away from Sean because Sean is more appropriate with Issabel. An unlucky woman like you doesn't deserve Sean!" Jackob raged.
"Yes," she replied briefly.
"If there's no more need, I'll excuse myself. I still have to go to class," said Skye, whose face was expressionless.
Skye walked away, but Jackob held her back and slapped Skye hard enough to knock her down. Fresh blood was now coming out of the corner of Skye's lips and nose, she was just silent with her face still turned. "Ungrateful child! If I hadn't raised you, you'd be dead! How disrespectful you are, huh!" Jackob shouted angrily.
Jackob then kicked Skye's leg hard. Right on the leg that had just healed a few days ago. Skye closed her eyes to endure the pain. It was so painful that the bone might break. "This is the last warning, don't let me know you're still near Sean!" Jackob said, and once again he kicked Skye's leg in another part before he left Skye.
After her father left, Skye let out a moan. She now bent her kicked leg, her hand massaging the sore spot. Her other hand now took a handkerchief from the hoodie she was wearing. She wiped her nose and the corner of her lips.
She tried to stand up, but she fell down because her leg was still very sore. Skye closed her eyes, calming herself if she could walk. After that, she stood up again. She was able to stand up and walk, although she was limping a bit because her leg was still in pain. She was late for class, luckily, the lecturer let her in because he saw Skye limping.
As the days passed, Skye was relieved that Sean was no longer seeing her. It's Sunday, because there is no work except at the mini market. Skye chooses to stay in her bed and not do any activities so that she doesn't get too tired and make herself hungry. Skye looked at the ceiling of the room she was in. Exhaling heavily before she closed her eyes again. She would sleep until later in the afternoon because this week she had a daytime work schedule.
A message notification came in, Skye looked at the sender. Her father's name was on the message. Skye rubbed her eyes to make sure it was really her father's message. She immediately stood up to clean her body, and after finishing, she ran back to see her father, who was at church.
