Chapter 3 - Darwin: Not here

Mr. Steven didn't even bother giving her detention. "I'd rather avoid you this year, Miss Riders. Please be on your best behavior."

She nodded politely. "Yes, sir."

He looked genuinely surprised. "You're agreeing with me? I see you turned over a new leaf this summer?"

Her smile widened. "Yes, I've decided to change my ways, sir. Your discipline inspired me last year."

He beamed with pride. "Did you hear that, students? You all should try to be like Miss Riders."

Darwin blinked. Couldn't the man read the room?

The entire class was on edge, shifting awkwardly in their seats and avoiding eye contact.

"Please pick your seat, Miss Riders," Mr. Steven said.

She walked through the class, her eyes scanning the room, studying every corner.

And then, the unmistakable sound of a chair dragging across the floor broke his concentration.

His heart pounded so loudly he thought he might actually pass out. He slowly turned his head, praying it wouldn't be anywhere near him.

But of course, it was.

Her eyes locked with his, a dark, mean glare framed by thick eyeliner. She winked. "Hi, again?"

Worst. Year. Ever.
