Chapter 31 - the Corpse of A scientist

Exploring many rooms, we came across something extremely odd. In one of them lay an extremely old computer.

Adam walked near it and started messing around.

"Damn, this computer's even older than the 1980s," he said, looking at it closely. He explored it further, searching for any games—and surprisingly, there were.

One game showed a pixelated person in red hot cap with fire, shooting fireballs at balloons made by enemies. The other featured a blue soldier pushing crates to reach a covered exit.

A file report was also there. Its main study read:

Processing…

(By: Mya Kanazawa)

…Hello world

(File 1): We have created a network computer, and we are trying to find a way… to make this global.

(File 2): Impossible… The electrical wavelength processing information between computers is too unstable. Is there any way to fix this?

(File 102): Fail

(File 246): Fail

(File 999): Impossible

This place was never worth saving. My projects have been corrupted and misused…

I hate humans. They're unpredictable, and their only goal is pleasure and gain.

{Please… Perish}

Adam coughed, feeling weirded out.

[So this is it… Mya's work. She's older than me, you know—probably one of the ancient scientists from 200–300 years ago.]

Yoku stayed silent, gathering as many books as he could, though there was a limit to how much he could carry.

The soldiers grumbled, tired and frustrated. There wasn't anything useful—nothing could be broken down or extracted. The structures were too durable.

"Hey everyone! Let's rest here," the commander ordered.

We finally settled down. On a table nearby was a bonsai tree, properly cared for by a maintenance robot. How old was this thing?

Rehan Jokes

[200 Years, hahh this thing is old]

Everyone grouped up and chatted. The middle-aged man stayed with us. Yoku was eating bread and canned fish.

"Hah, the ancient people must've been extremely smart if they created all this," someone remarked.

Adam munched on some bread—hard and crunchy on the outside, soft inside. Surprisingly tasty.

"If they really did create all this… maybe."

The middle-aged man smirked.

"Well, I think not. If they led the world to ruin, I'd say they were dumb. But I agree, it would've been better to live in a peaceful time."

Suddenly, four soldiers gathered together, laughing.

"Can we sit?" one asked.

This was new.

"Well…"

They sat down without waiting for consent. Adam sighed.

You shouldn't have said that if you weren't trying to be…Adam was upset

"Oh, the great Adam and Yoku, who made the settlement great. You truly are great," one of them smiled, chewing on some bread.

Was that genuine? Or sarcastic? Adam just sighed and kept eating.

One soldier with long hair kept talking.

"So how did you do it?"

"Well, it was thanks to Yoku."

They smiled.

"C'mon, can we join in on the share too? I mean, we let you in on the excavation. How about it…"

I was getting annoyed.

One of them, with medium brown hair and a thick jawline, added:

"Hah, that girl… what was her name again?"

"I think it was Yuri. Damn, she's gorgeous."

Some of the soldiers looked at Adam.

"Is she your sister or something? You've got white hair… C'mon, kid."

They nudged me to answer. I didn't know why… but I was extremely furious. I tried my best to hide it.

> "Hey Rehan, what's the success rate of killing these guys?"

[Given 1 second—the drones will appear. They'll panic, shooting fatal areas consecutively. In 2–3 seconds: 98% chance of success.

With 15–20 soldiers: 30% chance. It's highly likely you'll be shot before escaping, Adam.]

Sigh, why do i think of killing them outright, this is wrong... Have i change...

Why am I angry?

No, this is morally wrong.

This guy…

I should know better. The norm of this world is different from mine anyway—

Yoku pointed two handguns at the chests of the two soldiers.

"Can you please stay away?"

The middle-aged man pointed his rifle at them too.

"Guys, this is too far."

The soldiers eating in the distance looked surprised. The ones being targeted tried to act tough but were visibly scared.

"Hey, kid… That's not how you use a gun."

"Dammit, Arial! Why are you joining them?!"

Arial smiled.

"Well, I like this kid."

"Fine… Fine. But you do know this is an excavation area. Meaning you're in our territory…" one of them growled as they walked away.

Adam sighed, leaning back against the wall.

What was that?

What did I do?

Just a bit of success—and they act like that?

No… even if I didn't succeed, this is just who they are.

Humans...

They change.

But monsters don't.
