Chapter 121 - Changes in the Lake Region

Stormveil Castle.

The city, perennially bathed in gusting winds, rarely saw overcast days. The visibility was clear enough to pierce the mists above Liurnia, revealing the tracks of transport convoys.

Ever since the Raya Lucaria Academy had gradually become operational, this place had served as a bustling rear base.

Initially, production was limited to weapons and equipment, medicinal herbs and materials, and soldier encampments. In essence, manpower and resources were channeled to the front lines, increasing control while also guarding against renewed attacks from the Royal Capital Army.

After a month, things settled down.

In the meeting room, a group of nobles, led by Kenneth Haight, discussed further plans around a table conspicuously displaying a map.

An officer pointed to the route from Stormveil Castle to the Raya Lucaria Academy:

"Gentlemen, please observe. The main monster activity zones along this route have been cleared by us. Point-to-point communication between fortresses is stable, and supplies can now be transported smoothly between both locations."

"Based on our experience in the south, we should next focus on direct clearing operations."

"The pre-designated clearing areas are divided into two types: one to be handled by the army, with the key being to train soldiers and cultivate more powerful warriors. The other will be handled by Her Majesty, as she has always enjoyed exploring labyrinths for treasure chests."

Kenneth Haight asked,

"How is Her Majesty's situation?"

"It is said her frequency of sleep is higher than before, and she's been asking the mages at the Academy how to teach apprentices... She should be recuperating."

"It's rare for Her Majesty to be willing to rest more. However, she also seems busy with other matters, such as researching life's secret arts, healing, and similar work."

A collective sigh of relief went through the room.

They feared that a conflict of the scale seen at the Church of Vows battle might have left Frieren with some hidden injuries, which would interrupt her upward trajectory. Battles between demigods could easily cause long-lasting damage, resulting in a significant impact on strength, which would not be worth the cost.

Even a reduction in strength wasn't the most severe outcome. After all, one could always fight with all their might. The real fear was losing one's sanity and descending into madness.

Frieren was a emotionally stable queen and didn't dabble in outrageous or dangerous things, unlike Rykard playing with serpents, or the rumored Lord of Blood pledging allegiance to an Outer God... In comparison, she was far less worrisome.

"Then, I, Kenneth Haight, will report to my colleagues on the current state of operations in the south."

Speaking of this, his eyebrows danced, a touch of pride on his face.

"We have repaired 76% of the damaged roads in the south, making transit more convenient for both merchant caravans and armies. Simultaneously, we have established 12 large waystations and 6 new fortresses to guard against occasional monster appearances."

"Although Her Majesty has cleared most of the congregation points, sporadic ones still emerge, which serve as good practice."

"Furthermore, 25 villages have begun to recover and repair, and their former production is gradually reviving. Their artisans have been a great help to us."

"These supplies are being continuously transported to Stormveil Castle. The city walls have now been fully repaired, and the army has entirely updated its weapons and equipment."

"Large-scale armaments have increased fivefold, and troop numbers have tripled. The further cultivation of Grafted Scions and Dragon Communion adherents is also underway. Over five hundred Tarnished have registered with the Stormveil Castle guild, and they have been active in clearing many dangers in the south."

"..."

Kenneth Haight fluently described a series of achievements.

Managing the rear was precisely the kind of affair these nobles, with their manor-born backgrounds, excelled at.

The Lands Between were remarkably resilient, not lacking the potential for restoration. The key was to unleash it. Those Who Live in Death, the Hollows, and the monsters were all shackles; once broken, production would naturally and rapidly resume.

Although Stormveil Castle seemed inactive during the Church of Vows battle, it was actually dispatching troops to provide aid everywhere. One could imagine its abundant resources; otherwise, it absolutely could not have sustained the consumption.

Currently, things were proceeding smoothly. Even with the main forces deployed to the front lines, it did not affect the south's continued, unsparing efforts in cultivation.

That was all.

A brief report was completed.

Kenneth Haight asked loudly,

"Do you know what the biggest change in Stormveil Castle is compared to before?"

"That would be the even taller city walls, and we've expanded the towns around the city. This is already a super-large settlement area."

"Correct. I believe if this development continues, it will benchmark against the model of Leyndell, where town and city are indistinguishable, all enclosed within the walls. It's practically one city to rival a nation. Unfortunately, Stormhill isn't that flat, and we'll soon reach the limits of expansion."

"Magical advancement is the most important, Her Majesty is focused on this. Moreover, the Soul School mages can slightly alleviate the suffering of the Hollows. That Thops has also produced some results..."

"The primary change is that we are constantly on the offensive, even going to Caelid to help the Redmanes eliminate corrupted creatures."

Everyone offered different opinions, finally waiting for Kenneth Haight to give the answer:

"The strategic positioning is different. Previously, Stormveil Castle often became a frontline fortress, which is when its walls were useful. Now, that matters less, and its function is no longer limited to a single region."

"Haven't you realized yet? Before Her Majesty occupies the Royal Capital, the ground beneath our feet is the true capital city."

"Therefore, we've changed our thinking, strengthening mining, agriculture, and engineering here, preparing a large amount of materials for unforeseen needs. Understand?"

"As you command!"

It had to be admitted that Kenneth Haight had hit the nail on the head. It had become a capital city.

Thus, its military role was paradoxically less prominent, even starkly different from the era of the Storm Lord's rule. Because at that time, he did not command the three lands of the Weeping Peninsula, Limgrave, and Liurnia.

Moreover, the connections between various regions back then were far less close than during Frieren's time. In other words, many new functions were bestowed by today's circumstances, and they had to adapt.

The nobles present took a deep breath, their expressions solemn. Indeed, this trend would not stop. The burden on their shoulders was heavier, and many problems would be difficulties they had never faced before.

But so what? They would only become stronger.

If their abilities continued to improve and kept pace with Frieren's expanding influence, then their power would only rise.

Depending on the Queen was one aspect; whether they could keep up was also crucial. They had to show determination.

After surveying the room, Kenneth Haight nodded with satisfaction,

"Very good. Recognizing this, we will focus more on supplying resources to the front lines. The real bridgehead now is the Raya Lucaria Academy. In the future, we will actually be safer."

"And I am certain that Caelid will also be brought under Her Majesty's rule. Then Stormveil Castle will truly be the center surrounded by three lands."

His words made everyone's eyes light up with anticipation.

"However, the Scarlet Rot is very difficult to deal with."

"Correct, so we must transfer the research results from the magic laboratory here."

Kenneth Haight produced a secret letter.

"Her Majesty commands us to transfer some mage personnel."

"I see. Whether it's concentrating resources or sending apprentices for further study, that is the best choice."

"Let's get moving. Don't keep them waiting too long. From now on, Stormveil Castle must be efficient, like a true super-capital."

"Yes."

The vision Kenneth Haight painted today was enough to keep everyone present too excited to sleep.

Inside Stormveil Castle's magic workshop. For security reasons, it was half-buried underground, protected by layers of barriers set by Frieren. Thus, the light was dim, requiring various illumination spells. This was, of course, no problem for the apprentices. Everyone bustled about, constantly discussing new findings. Even with Frieren and Sellen, the two leaders, absent, they maintained a strong enthusiasm.

"Another step forward. We can now suppress the pain of the Hollows."

"Yes, once the pain is suppressed, their sanity also returns."

"Unfortunately, they can only perform simple tasks, and we haven't reached the point of reversing Hollowing. They have to go to the Academy for treatment."

"That kind of ability is unique to Her Majesty Frieren, right? Truly worthy of being called the Lord of Cinder."

"D..."

Although they had worked very hard, true soul healing magic was still unique and difficult to replicate. The more they researched, the more they discovered that it was actually based on an entire magical system, profound understanding, and most importantly, talent. Throughout history, Frieren's aptitude was considered top-tier. As a Tarnished, she had already made a name for herself outside the Lands Between. Her fundamental skills were something these apprentices lacked.

However, everyone had other projects. For example, Professor Thops's research on repelling force fields had now become a popular field of study in Stormveil Castle. He himself spent all day writing and drawing on blackboards, chatting idly, but in reality, he enlightened many students of lesser aptitude and even enabled numerous warriors to master basic force fields.

He finally no longer had to worry about the intrigues within the Academy and could focus solely on research.

The apprentices looked towards the bald man in the corner of the workshop, pacing around a blackboard. Even his unkempt beard didn't affect his concentration. He often forgot to eat and sleep, working day and night.

Thops was very satisfied with the current situation, as long as he could conduct research. Not to mention, many people called him "teacher," and his achievements were receiving much attention. Wasn't this better than enduring all sorts of grievances at the Academy?

That being said, he still wanted to go back and see...

Snap!

The chalk breaking in his hand interrupted his thoughts.

Thops turned and said,

"Don't aim too high. Reaching the point of suppressing the pain of Hollows with soul magic is already the limit. Every step further is the realm of talent."

"Indeed."

"Study the repelling force field carefully. At least it can help you survive a little longer against an average mage."

"Professor, you have talent too, don't you know? Thanks to many soldiers learning this magic with low mana requirements, they were able to save their lives in the Church of Vows battle."

Members of the Southern Army would try to learn Thops's force field whenever they exerted themselves slightly. Although there were various restrictions and limiting factors, it was at least another means of dealing with enemies. Especially when facing the Royal Capital Army, which was proficient in various sorceries and incantations.

"Wait, what did you say?"

Suddenly, Thops was dumbfounded.

"What Church of Vows battle? What happened?"

"Huh?"

"Could it be that Her Majesty has fought her way to the Raya Lucaria Academy?!"

The apprentices couldn't help but chuckle. It turned out the professor, who never left his workshop, was completely unaware of major events. They spent a good while catching him up, telling him about the situation over the past period, including but not limited to the conflict before the Academy gates, the cooperation between the Lunar Princess and the Lord of Cinder, the defeat of the Full Moon Queen, the second repulsion of Margit, and a series of other events... collectively termed the Second Liurnian War.

Following Radagon's southward march with the Golden Army to create the dynasty's glory, war had once again erupted in the lake region, ending with Frieren's swift victory. They recounted it with animated expressions, sharing in the glory. After all, it was a great victory achieved by the main southern forces. They had always been considered a backwater by those in Leyndell, the Royal Capital; now they could finally hold their heads high.

Bombarded with information, Thops scratched his head, frowning deeply, as if battlefield scenes were appearing in his mind.

"What were the Academy's losses?"

"Rest assured, due to the swift resolution, their losses were minimal. However, Her Majesty and Professor Sellen cleared out many traitors, who were unstable elements."

"Regardless, I must make a trip back."

"Coincidentally, Lord Kenneth Haight has relayed Her Majesty's orders: the magic workshop is to be relocated to the Academy. By my calculations, it should be about time to depart."

Learning of such drastic changes, Thops couldn't sit still. He had to see how his homeland was faring. It was hard to imagine the extent of destruction Frieren, such a powerful mage, could cause when unleashed. He hoped the main structure of the Academy was still intact; he didn't expect much else.

Soon, the escorting soldiers finished assembling, and along with a group of apprentices, began moving supplies. The so-called relocation was to be done in batches. Some of the better-performing individuals would go to the Academy for advanced studies first, where the resources and teachers were undoubtedly top-notch.

That was good too. Although Thops had been ostracized, he still acknowledged their caliber. Since it had undergone Her Majesty's governance, it was certainly better than when the academic cliques held sway. Otherwise, she wouldn't have ordered people to be brought over. After all, it was well known that this laboratory was Frieren's treasured possession.

Not far away, Kenneth Haight called out,

"Hey, Professor Thops, remember to put in a good word for me when you see Her Majesty."

The nobles were not without regrets. Even the workshop was being moved; it was clear she wouldn't be back for a while and would likely be stationed at the Raya Lucaria Academy front for a considerable period.

The group set off in a vast, organized procession. Only then did he come to his senses and observe the interior of Stormveil Castle. It was completely renewed. The flagstones had been repaired, the potholes on the walls had all disappeared, and the erected fortifications were somewhat sturdier. From time to time, dragons circled, patrolling.

The streets within the city were bustling with an endless stream of people, and the cries of vendors were frequent. It was almost like a marketplace. If one looked beyond the city gates, the hills surrounding Stormveil Castle were already filled with houses, taverns, stables, and other facilities... Stormhill had probably formed a structure where the city and towns complemented each other.

How many people, like himself, had been drawn here by her fame during this time? Or were they simply people who had recovered from their Hollowing state? Had they brought vitality?

"Vitality?"

Thops murmured to himself.

In fact, Liurnia of the Lakes was also teeming with life, albeit that of beasts and monsters; humans could only cower in their homes. The south was the first to welcome the bustling scenes of revival. This was brought by Frieren. Even she would probably find it incredible if she returned to see it.

It proved that there was an underlying logic to the general support for a monarch in the Lands Between. That military might, with just a little protection, could allow the resilient people to rally. Not to mention, the Lord of Cinder had also repaired the Hollowing disaster after the shattering of the Elden Ring, and suppressed Those Who Live in Death and the Frenzied Flame. Without these three things, the remaining monsters were not a concern; the Southern Army was now sufficient to handle them.

"I hope Liurnia sees this day soon."

Meanwhile, Thops heard the students calling him. He needed to quicken his pace and reach the Academy as soon as possible. It had been a long time. The only thing that made him nervous was perhaps what attitude he should adopt when facing it.

Liurnia Highway.

Descending from Stormhill directly to the eastern highlands of the lake, an ancient, stone-paved highway stretched towards the Raya Lucaria Academy.

Although much time had passed, it remained sturdy and reliable, capable of allowing swift passage for carriages.

The laboratory members and guards formed a considerable procession on the highway. Stormhawks circled overhead, on patrol, ever vigilant against approaching enemies. Even under Frieren's rule, it didn't mean there was no monster harassment.

The task of clearing them was far from over.

Suddenly, Thops caught a whiff of something burning and muttered,

"Could there be a forest fire?"

"It's our people cleaning the battlefield. Some equipment that couldn't be taken away and was severely damaged is being burned on the spot. Look."

Following the direction a guard pointed, there was indeed a small squad.

Both parties greeted each other with joyful smiles. In a sense, they had already rendezvoused, as the appearance of these soldiers meant they were within the military radiation range/area of influence of the Raya Lucaria Academy, instilling a great sense of security.

"Post-battle?"

Looking around, Thops noticed the fresh scent of grass and earth, yet it hadn't rained. Seeing the countless deep pits, it was clear the ground had been turned over.

Literally turned upside down. The residual magic power was still terrifying.

"Her Majesty engaged the Royal Capital Army in the area up ahead. I was fortunate enough to witness it. It was truly a world-shattering event, with thunder striking constantly. I was at the rear of the army formation and couldn't see the very front line clearly, only felt the ground shaking."

The surviving soldiers recalled with no small amount of pride:

"I was at the front line and saw the Abyss Watchers and Her Majesty coordinating flawlessly, severely wounding that Fell Omen."

"He was quite persistent, so tenacious even after being repelled twice."

"Meaningless. Can a child of the Omen contend with Her Majesty for the Elden Ring? Just one look at her beauty, and you'll forget his so-called demi-human features."

They chatted idly while not forgetting to repave the road, as a considerable portion of the flagstones had been reduced to dust.

Crunch!

Even stepping on the seemingly intact highway, Thops felt it undulate constantly. Sensing the residual magic within, he couldn't help but wipe the sweat from his brow. It was truly exaggerated. What kind of battle had taken place?

Compared to his caution, the accompanying apprentices were thrilled.

They would even proactively pick up weapons broken by the torrent of magic, fiddling with them to feel their heavy weight. The people cleaning the battlefield didn't mind; if they wanted to take them as souvenirs, they were welcome to, as they were too damaged to be used anyway.

"Excellent! Will we participate in such battles in the future?"

"Although we missed the Church of Vows battle, the siege of the Royal Capital awaits us, or perhaps we'll flatten that arrogant Volcano Manor first."

"You're not scared at all."

Thops had intended to dissuade them, but everyone yearned for a war to unify the Lands Between. Perhaps it was he who couldn't keep up with the times.

While deep in thought, the group descended from the eastern highlands of Liurnia, heading straight towards the center of the amber.

A damp aroma washed over them; the familiar atmosphere had returned. Lush water plants, swaying tree shadows – most likely hiding creatures like giant crayfish. A moment of carelessness could cost one's life.

Wait!

The next moment, his eyes widened. The former ruins had actually been repaired into small waterside villages. The inhabitants greeted them enthusiastically, without any wariness or hostility.

Living under the protection of the outskirts of the Raya Lucaria Academy, they would naturally be calm.

"Why are you living here?"

"Her Majesty is healing the Hollows around the Academy and has also cleared out the wandering monsters. So we moved our whole families here. People have been cured, and they've even hired us to repair buildings. We might as well settle down first..."

Thops nodded. A familiar pattern had already played out around Stormveil Castle.

He believed Liurnia would develop even more resources next.

Although Frieren didn't understand the finer details of governance, she clearly understood that in chaotic times, people needed stability and security more than anything. As long as a basic environment was provided, development could happen rapidly. The thriving scenes in both cities proved her thinking was entirely correct.

The waterside towns and villages were built upon the original ruins, so they were constructed quickly. For him, it meant one less place of memories.

That was fine too.

The world moves forward; it shouldn't remain unchanged. A continuous, irreversible decline is more terrifying than anything. Now, finally, someone was turning the tide.

Thops had been somewhat nervous when he returned, but now he was relieved. Don't hesitate. Those voices weren't important. And interestingly, the most pretentious academic faction had been wiped out. The remaining mages had no choice but to live together with those they considered commoners...

No, they were already coexisting harmoniously.

In the waterside towns, there were plenty of mages chatting with merchants, looking very affable.

"Isn't that Thops? You're back?"

Hearing the greeting, he was slightly taken aback.

"You don't know yet, do you? Her Majesty specifically established a classroom named after you to research repelling force field magic."

"What do you mean! You're not deceiving me, are you?"

"We are always serious about academics. In fact, Her Majesty also taught a new repelling-type magic called Warped Light Wall. You two should have common research topics now."

Hearing this, Thops just answered dazedly, unable to believe if he had somehow become famous.

Actually, Frieren merely unilaterally considered anyone she taught to be a student. He hadn't even thought of it as a teacher-student relationship. Yet, the latter's promotion had unexpectedly made Thops's force field famous.

There was no better stage than the battlefield. After all, the Lord of Cinder's repeated demonstrations of repelling magic abilities were witnessed by all.

This was how it should be.

After hearing the recount, Thops smiled for the first time in a long while. So this magic had helped her, had protected Liurnia. That was enough.

Originally, these magics, considered peripheral, were not valued.

It even led the academic faction to rank everything, believing even staves had hierarchies. As a result, Frieren, with the Demi-Human Queen, thrashed them, running circles around the Academy with a series of basic spells, leading to a total rout.

When it came time to use top-tier magic, she also had an abundant stock. To this day, tales of the Sunlight Spear breaking an army with a single strike circulated from the battle. Therefore, all magic related to her entered people's vision.

"It's a good thing if my research is passed down."

Gratified, Thops continued deeper into the Academy. Its gates were now wide open, no longer sealed by layers of barriers.

The patrolling soldiers merely checked passes and questioned people. In reality, the true defensive forces were all on the periphery, adopting a strategy of proactively defending the lake region rather than shrinking back and passively defending.

Upon entering the Academy, he found a grand avenue. The towering buildings on either side were oppressive, their bay windows refracting light, collectively showcasing the ancient castle complex.

As expected, it was a familiar sight. That was what was strange.

"Wasn't there a war? How come there are no traces of battle?"
