Chapter 49 - Dimensional Crisis

"Beautiful—what a perfect finish!"

"That was amazing, Hikaru! Kaiser!"

The duel had ended. Hikaru Amagi finally exhaled, his shoulders sagging with relief. But the next moment, his legs gave out, and he nearly collapsed—if not for Zane Truesdale swiftly catching him.

They'd spent the entire duel on the defensive, mounting only a single, decisive counterattack in the final turn. But to pull it off, Hikaru had willingly crashed into the Vampire Heiress three times. The backlash from her Blood Curse effects had torn his body up—cuts and bruises everywhere. His knees wobbled from the pain.

"An exquisite duel." On the elevated duelist platform, the Vampire Heiress's Duel Disk detached from her arm, floating upward and morphing into a parasol. She caught it delicately and rested it on her shoulder to block the moonlight. "It seems I underestimated you, warriors of the human realm."

Her previous arrogance hadn't come from nowhere. After becoming one of the Seven Stars, she'd covertly observed this school and its students. A rough analysis led her to believe most duelists here were laughably weak—defeated easily by even lesser vampires of the Empire. In her eyes, she alone should've been more than enough.

She hadn't expected such disparity between students.

If she had to do it again, she definitely wouldn't have brought Camula into a tag duel so carelessly.

"Th-this can't be... it's impossible! The Lady—she couldn't possibly lose!!" Camula's face twisted in disbelief, her fingers twitching like she was about to throw hands.

"Camula," the Heiress said softly, shaking her head. "That's enough. We lost, in a sacred Duel. We honor our agreements. Don't worry. I'll find another way to resurrect your kin."

As a Duel Monster spirit, she couldn't reject the outcome of a duel.

As she spoke, her body began to dissolve into golden particles. Fragile as porcelain already, her form now looked even more delicate—graceful, fading.

"Wait—!" Hikaru saw her vanishing and quickly interrupted. "Wait, Miss Vampire!"

"What is it, warrior of mankind?" she said, yawning softly. "I'm afraid... a long slumber awaits me. Do you need something?"

Per the rules of a Shadow Duel, the loser would be sealed inside a card. For her, a spirit already bound to cards, it was just a period of sleep.

But Hikaru had questions—questions he had to ask before she disappeared.

"You don't seem like a villain. Why become a Seven Star? Why go after the Sacred Beasts' keys?"

Ah!

Only now did the other students snap to realization.

A good question—an important one.

Hikaru remembered: in the original timeline, Camula became a Seven Star because humanity hunted her vampire kin into extinction. She was the last of her kind, and she wanted to use the Sacred Beasts to destroy humans and resurrect her race.

But the Vampire Heiress was a Duel Spirit! The Sacred Beasts awakening would be just as catastrophic for her!

"…I see. So you still don't know," she murmured, a faint smile returning to her lips. "Very well.

Camula, explain it to them."

Her body finally dissolved completely into glittering particles, transforming into a Duel Monster card that floated gently into the arms of her vampire maids. They bowed as they caught it reverently. With her gone, even the moonlight over the mansion dimmed.

Meanwhile, the Vampire Enchantress's card drifted toward Hikaru and Zane. Hikaru snatched it out of the air with two fingers. It carried a second card along with it—one with the Vampire Heiress's artwork, but devoid of spirit.

"Man..." Chazz Princeton sighed, just a little melancholic.

A beautiful spirit-girl card, gone just like that.

Still, he wasn't exactly rushing to befriend Duel Spirits lately.

Camula, meanwhile, glared at the group, fists clenched—but after a long pause, she finally spoke.

And in her explanation, the students finally understood—

The Vampire Heiress wasn't just any Duel Spirit.

She was the ruler of the Vampire Empire—from another dimension.

Well, acting ruler—temporary regent. The true monarch, Lord Trueblood, vanished during the cataclysm.

It began ages ago. The Spirit Realm—home to all Duel Spirits—was torn apart by an ancient civil war. Massive internal conflict shattered the realm, splintering factions across isolated dimensions. Though some still maintained ties—Lightsworn and Dark World remained locked in conflict despite being worlds apart, Atlanteans and Fire Kings still waged their neverending war—communication between races weakened.

Then, a few years ago, the Vampire Empire—lurking in the shadows—was struck by an unknown, incomprehensible threat. The entire dimension teetered on collapse. To uncover the truth, Lord Trueblood personally left to investigate… and never returned.

Their world continued to destabilize.

Eventually, they had no choice but to do what other realms had already done—begin fragmenting their dimension into shattered realms, delaying destruction and protecting the weak.

"Oh yeah, Hikaru." A voice piped up—Captain Crystagon materialized beside him, drawing Jaden Yuki's attention and making Chazz nearly leap out of his shoes.

Hikaru had a Spirit too!?

"My world… might've been invaded too," Crystagon said hesitantly. "But if so, it was only a small probe."

Yeah. Even if some dark villain did peek at Duel Terminal World… they probably noped out instantly. That world was nuts enough to self-destruct on its own.

"After that, the Lady began exploring other dimensions," Camula continued. "Searching for Lord Trueblood—and for a power to shield our people. And then… she found me."

For once, Camula's expression softened.

"I had nothing. My kin, gone. I was a stray mongrel. But the Lady didn't care—she welcomed me, sheltered me. When she heard about the Sacred Beasts, she offered her help immediately.

Not for power. Just the chance to find the truth of our world."

She lowered her head.

"Too bad…"

"Wow… I didn't expect her to be such a good spirit," Syrus sniffled, rubbing his nose. "She's so pretty… of course she's good."

"Spirits, huh…" Chazz frowned.

"A one-sided tale," Hikaru muttered.

Sure, she was doing it for her people. But she'd still had Camula send bats to knock students unconscious. Still tried to unseal the Sacred Beasts—for her world's sake, sure—but that was disaster for everyone else, human and spirit alike.

She had morals. Just… different ones.

Which made sense.

She wasn't human.

"Even if you've defeated the Lady," Camula hissed, eyes glowing, "don't think you can rest easy. You humans… You dive into dimensional travel with no preparation—like opening Pandora's Box—and now, horrors have been unleashed. This world is growing more dangerous by the day.

One day, you will pay the price. In blood."

As she finished, Hikaru and the others found themselves standing once more on the surface of the lake. The foggy mansion behind them shimmered—then vanished. As though it had never existed at all.

They were gone.

Back to their own world.

And floating on the wind came one last drowsy whisper, curling through the night like a secret:

"Warriors of humanity… if you ever wish to visit our realm, you'll be more than welcome."
