Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Fury of Dawn

The sun began to rise.

But its light brought no peace.

It only revealed, with cruel clarity, the scale of the hell before us.

Echo-Zero was burning.

Explosions.Screams.Sharp gunfire.And creatures… everywhere.

When we arrived, there was no time to announce ourselves. We charged straight into the fight.

—Down! Now! —I shouted, releasing a shockwave that cleared the main entrance.

Romina and Pablo split immediately—one to the left, the other down the center.Patricio moved in silence, drawing runes in the air with deadly precision.

The rest of the squad, trained for war, split and executed their roles without hesitation.

This was unlike anything we'd faced before.

The creatures weren't just aggressive—they were organized.

They moved in formations.Protected strategic points.Attacked in calculated waves.

This wasn't an ambush. It was a systematic execution.

And yet… they were still holding.

—Visual on allies! —shouted one of the defenders from above.

The commander—the woman from the transmission—descended from the tower.Hair tied back.Improvised armor.A face hardened by fire.

—Who are you? —she asked, without stopping.

—Diego —I replied.Mobile independent squad.

She didn't ask anything else.Just nodded.

And fought beside melike we'd known each other forever.

For hours, the battle raged through every corner of the refuge.

I covered a civilian—and two creatures jumped from the roof.

Patricio shattered their guard.Pablo impaled them without flinching.Romina sealed a collapsing hallway.

No one stepped back.

But then…

we felt it.

A pressure in the air—as if the entire refuge was holding its breath.

From the far hill…

it emerged.

Tall.Thin.Wearing a cloak of shadows that moved like it breathed.

Eyes glowing white.No pupils.No mouth.

But a smile—invisible, and yet undeniable.

—The leader… —Vega muttered.

I nodded.

—I saw it in my past life —I said before I could stop myself—.No one… ever managed to kill it.

—Can you?

I took a deep breath.

—Today, we'll find out.

It didn't speak.

It walked.

The creatures paused.Everyone stared.

As if the world had collapsed into this single moment.

I stepped forward.Alone.

And drew my sword.

Dawn was no longer light.

It was fury.
