Prologue

The forest burned furiously, as though unnatural elements had fed the flames. The trees crackled like the sound of bones snapping as the fire burned its roots.

A white wolf, injured and bleeding, raced through the flames with a baby clutched gently in her jaws. Her breaths were shallow, desperate, her pace fueled by instinct and fear.

She reached the edge of a human village under cover of darkness, her paws barely making a sound on the cold earth. At a certain doorstep, she laid the child down with trembling care.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered, tears in her glowing eyes. "I hope one day… you'll understand."

Without another word, she vanished back into the shadows of the burning woods.
