Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Watch

The campus buzzed with the usual energy of youthful ambition, a cacophony of voices drifting through the air as students hustled between classes. The sound of laughter mixed with the distant hum of luxury cars that drove past the gates, their owners barely noticing the sea of students struggling to fit in. Elias Stone walked through the bustling quad, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his worn-out jacket, the weight of his backpack dragging his shoulders lower with each step. He wasn't like the others. His shoes were scuffed, his jeans faded, and his face carried the weary look of someone who had long been used to being invisible.

Elias was 18, still a student at one of the most prestigious universities in the city, but he didn't belong here. Not in the same way the rich kids did, the ones who wore designer clothes and sipped on lattes like it was the only drink worth tasting. Elias was poor. He came from a broken family, his father long gone, and his mother struggling just to keep food on the table. He had to work part-time at an auto shop just to afford his tuition, but it was never enough to make him feel like he was a part of the world he so desperately wanted to belong to.

His classmates looked past him, their eyes glazing over as they whispered behind his back, mocking his lack of wealth, his inability to fit in with their shiny, perfect lives. They talked about the galas, the parties, and the student unions where the rich and beautiful gathered to celebrate their privilege. Elias wasn't invited to those events, not in the same way the others were. And yet, he had dreams—dreams of fitting in, of finding something, anything, that would lift him from the dark shadows of his life.

That was until he found the watch.

It happened during one of his shifts at the auto shop, late into the night when the shop was empty except for him and a few old tools lying in the corner. He was cleaning up when a strange glint caught his eye from the far side of the workbench. He walked over, curious, and found a small, dusty box. Inside was a silver pocket watch, unlike anything he had ever seen. Its intricate design seemed to glow faintly under the dim light of the shop. The moment his fingers brushed against the cold metal, something inside him shifted.

The watch seemed... alive. It pulsed with energy, sending a shiver down his spine. He stared at it for a moment, unsure whether to pick it up or leave it. But the feeling of desperation, of wanting more, of being tired of his life of mockery, pushed him to take it. The moment he held it, the world around him seemed to change. The bustling noises from the street outside became muffled, the hum of the fluorescent lights above dimmed, and in the dead silence of the shop, a voice echoed in his mind.

Task One: Find a way to be noticed. You have three days.

Elias blinked, shaking his head as if to clear his thoughts. What the hell? He looked at the watch again, turning it over in his hands. It wasn't just any ordinary timepiece—it was a conduit for something far beyond his understanding. A task, a challenge, a reward? He didn't know, but something about it felt real. He could feel it deep in his chest.

He shoved the watch into his pocket, his heart racing. This was no ordinary discovery. Whatever it was, it was going to change everything.

The next few days were a blur. Elias was no stranger to hardship, but these tasks, they were different. The first one was simple enough—he had to find a way to get noticed. But for someone like Elias, someone who had spent most of his life being ignored or laughed at, this was no small feat. His first thought was to buy new clothes, but that was out of the question. Money was tight, and the few dollars he earned were barely enough for food.

That was when he noticed Scarlett Malone, the beautiful influencer who had always seemed so far out of his reach. She was standing by the student center, talking to a group of friends, her laughter ringing through the air like music. He had seen her in class, of course—everyone had. Scarlett was everything he wasn't: rich, popular, and undeniably stunning. Elias had always watched her from afar, too shy to even speak to her, too poor to imagine she'd ever even look his way.

But the watch... the task. It gave him an idea.

That afternoon, he found himself standing in front of her, his heart pounding in his chest. "Hey, Scarlett," he said, his voice sounding strange in his own ears. She turned, her eyes narrowing as she looked him over.

"Yeah? What do you want?" she asked, her tone polite but distant. She didn't know him, not really, and the dismissive glance she gave him told him everything he needed to know. He wasn't worth her time.

But Elias wasn't the same boy anymore.

"I have a proposition for you," he said, surprising even himself with his boldness. "A... bet, I guess." He held his breath, waiting for her response.

She raised an eyebrow, intrigued but still cautious. "What kind of bet?"

Elias could feel the heat rising in his face. This was it. He didn't know why, but something inside him pushed him forward. "I can make you a star. I can get you more followers, more attention. All you need to do is take me with you to your next event. I'll make it worth your while."

Scarlett stared at him, her eyes calculating. There was a flicker of interest, but she didn't immediately agree. "And what's in it for you?" she asked, skeptical.

"Nothing," Elias said quickly. "Just the satisfaction of proving that I can do it."

Her lips curled into a small smirk. "You think you can turn me into a bigger star? Fine, I'll bite. But if you fail, you owe me."

Elias nodded, the challenge now set. He felt something shift inside him, like a switch had been flipped. For the first time, he felt like he was in control. The task had begun.

As he walked away, the watch in his pocket seemed to hum with energy. The reward for completing the task would be his soon enough, he thought. He didn't know what it would be, but one thing was certain: his life would never be the same.
