Chapter 9 - Chapter Ten – The Trial of Souls

The cloaked figure before them moved in the eerie stillness of the cavern. His glowing eyes shimmered like two pale moons, and the soft echo of his voice lingered in the air.

"You are the next. The Ascendant," he repeated, his words somehow reverberating with ancient power. "Your bond is the key to everything that comes next. But before you proceed, you must prove yourselves worthy."

Evren took a step forward, his hand tightening around his sword, his body radiating unease. "Prove ourselves? What do you mean?"

The figure's smile was cold, knowing. "You will face the Trial of Souls. The bond between you is not simply a gift. It is a weapon, a curse, a salvation, and a destruction. Only through confronting your deepest fears will you understand its true nature."

Cas felt a cold shiver run through him. He instinctively glanced at Evren. Their bond flickered, reacting to the presence of the figure. Something deep in Cas's chest tugged painfully, like a distant echo of a memory he couldn't reach.

"The Trial of Souls is a test of strength, of trust. It will separate you, test you, tear you apart. Only when you have faced yourselves can you truly ascend."

Cas swallowed hard. He had no idea what to expect, but he already felt the weight of the words hanging over him.

"Trust is everything," the figure added, his voice now like a whisper inside their minds. "If you falter, if you doubt the bond between you, the consequences will be fatal."

Evren's eyes hardened. "We don't falter."

The figure nodded, as if he already knew the outcome.

"The trial begins now."

🌑 The Rift

In an instant, the cavern dissolved around them, replaced by a vast, endless darkness. Cas could feel the bond humming violently between them, the glow of their connection flickering like a dying star.

"Cas…" Evren's voice broke through the dark, strained and unsure. "Where are you?"

Cas felt his heart race. His vision blurred, and he reached out blindly, his fingers grasping for something—anything—familiar. But there was nothing. Only darkness. He couldn't feel Evren next to him.

The bond thread was still there, weak, distant, as if it was being pulled apart.

This isn't real, Cas thought, trying to convince himself. It's a test.

But his mind was already clouded by the whispers that filled the void.

"You think you're worthy?" a voice sneered. It was deep, malevolent. "You're nothing. Both of you. Broken toys in a game you'll never win."

Cas's breath hitched, his pulse quickening as the voice swirled around him, mocking him, digging into his insecurities.

"You killed him. Don't you remember? You killed your brother, just like you're going to kill him."

Cas gasped, his legs giving out beneath him. He fell to his knees as the weight of the accusation crushed him. No. I didn't…

But the image of his brother's face—twisted in pain, in betrayal—flooded his mind. His hands shook as the memories came rushing back.

The fight, the betrayal, the horrible choice that had been forced upon him.

He gasped for air, but the voice kept twisting the truth.

"You always fail, Cas. You're not enough. Not enough for anyone. Not even for him."

The darkness seemed to close in tighter, suffocating him, drowning him in guilt.

And then—

A hand, warm and firm, touched his shoulder.

"Cas…"

It was Evren.

Cas whipped his head around. Evren stood there, looking as lost as Cas felt—but his eyes were steady. Calm. And the bond between them was bright again, a steady beacon.

"You're not alone," Evren said softly. "None of this is real."

Cas swallowed hard, his chest tight with emotion. "Evren, I—"

Evren knelt beside him, pulling him into a firm embrace. "I know. We face this together."

And in that moment, Cas felt something shift. The darkness didn't disappear, but the weight of it lifted just enough for him to breathe.

"You won't lose me," Evren whispered.

Cas's heart thudded painfully, his emotions raw. I can't lose him, he realized, the truth hitting him like a physical blow.

But the moment of clarity was fleeting. The darkness rumbled again, louder this time, twisting and morphing.

The voice sneered. "You think that will save you? He will never be yours. You're not worthy of his love."

Cas recoiled. The words were like a punch, sinking into his chest, and for a moment, doubt flickered.

Evren gripped his arms. "Cas, don't listen to it. You're stronger than this."

Cas nodded, forcing the doubt away. He focused on Evren—on the bond that connected them—and reached deep, pulling on the power within him.

We are stronger together.

The bond between them pulsed, brighter than ever, an unshakable connection that pushed back the darkness. The whispers started to fade, their power weakening under the strength of their unity.

Together, they stood, hand in hand, in the heart of the trial.

The Trial's End

The dark space around them began to dissolve, replaced by a brilliant light. It wrapped around them, lifting them from the ground as the trial's echoes faded.

The cloaked figure reappeared, watching them with a strange expression.

"You have passed the Trial of Souls," he said, his voice soft, almost approving. "You have faced your fears, your doubts—and in doing so, you have proven the strength of your bond."

Evren's hand tightened around Cas's. "That wasn't easy."

Cas met his gaze. "But we did it."

The figure nodded. "You are now worthy of ascension. The path ahead will not be easy, but you have already chosen your way. Together."

As the last words echoed in their minds, a new force swept through the space. The rift reappeared, this time pulling them forward, closer to their next destination.

"We're ready," Cas said, his voice firm.

Evren's eyes were steady, full of resolve. "We're not just ready. We're unbreakable."

And together, they stepped forward into the light.
