Chapter 3 - New Memories

When Catherine entered the medicine room, she saw a ten year old boy pointing his finger at the young doctor Lilly before falling back unconscious onto the bed.

"What happened?" Catherine asked the middle aged doctor with a frown.

"It is nothing serious. His mind seems to be a little unstable. He will be fine after a good sleep," the middle aged doctor said after touching Alvin's forehead.

Catherine nodded. "Contact me after he is ready to answer my questions."

After that, Catherine walked back to her office.

But just as Catherine turned around, Alvin groggily opened his eyes and sat up with a blank look on his face.

The middle aged doctor once again placed his palm on Alvin's forehead and smiled at Catherine. "His consciousness is stable now."

Catherine nodded. She walked up to Alvin. "Hello little friend. My name is Catherine and I am the captain of the law enforcement branch of Heavenly Wood City. We were the ones who rescued you yesterday."

Alvin looked at the beautiful woman before him blankly.

"Can you introduce yourself?"

Alvin nodded. He recalled the new memories he had just received in his head and said, "My name is Alvin Nyxborn. I am an orphan and my house is situated in Blue Water Village near the seashore."

Catherine asked again, "Can you recall how you ended up under the custody of those researchers from Newgate Alliance?"

Alvin took a moment to recall his memory and said, "Merchant Luke, who sells magic beast meat to our village offered me a job as an errand boy in his shop. But instead of taking me to his shop, he asked me to go with some other people. I do not remember anything else."

Catherine's face darkened. "Merchant Luke?... seems like he is in a hurry to reincarnate."

She then turned to the middle aged doctor. "How about his physical condition?"

"His body is fine but his magic core seems to be mutated. I sensed the presence of all the nine elements inside him. I suspect this happened because of the strange experiment Newgate Alliance members conducted on his body," the middle aged doctor said.

Catherine's face changed. "So does that mean their experiment is a success?"

The middle aged doctor shook his head. "No. Although he appears to have all the elements, in fact the quality of his magic core has dropped to a very low level. It is not worth it."

Catherine sighed. She rubbed Alvin's head playfully and said, "Rest well after eating something. I will ask one of my subordinates to drop you home by evening."

After Catherine left, Lilly took Alvin to the cafeteria to buy him some food before sending him back to the bed for resting.

Alvin lay on the bed with a dazed look on his face. "Is this for real? How did I end up in the body of another person, that too from an entirely different world..."

From the new memories Alvin received from this body, he found out that the previous owner of this body was also called Alvin. Although this world is a parallel world similar to Earth in many ways, here magicians and magic beasts were not a made up story but reality.

In his previous life Alvin was an orphan but in this world he had a little sister and a loving mother. But after his mother was arrested, the lives of the two children became quite miserable. The previous owner of this body chose to abandon his little sister at an orphanage since he could not afford to feed her as well.

He survived each day stealing food from nearby houses or by doing some odd jobs in the village.

Alvin sighed. "It is a good thing that Lyra is staying at the orphanage. At least she did not have to suffer with me."

Still, Alvin decided to secretly go and meet his little sister after he reached home.

That evening, one of the officers drove Alvin to his home.

After thanking the officer, Alvin watched him drive away before walking toward his home.

"Little bastard, I thought you died somewhere outside since I did not see you for more than a week. Tsk... what a waste," a middle aged woman scoffed when she saw Alvin walking toward his home.

After adapting to the memories of the previous owner of this body, Alvin knew that after his mother was taken away, the villagers who always smiled at him kindly changed their personality overnight. Now in their eyes, he and his little sister were only a disgrace to their village's name.

If not for the village chief's intervention, these people might have chased him out of the village long ago.

Alvin ignored the glares of the people around him and used the key he placed below the floor mat to open the door.

Inside his bamboo hut there were only two small rooms, a bathroom, and a small kitchen.

Alvin sat on the bed in one of the rooms and thought about his next plan. "If I continue living like this, sooner or later I will die from starvation. Since there is magic in this world, let's try if I can earn some money through it."

In Celestia, most people awaken their magic cores at the age between six and thirty years old. One could then start practicing magic by absorbing mana inside their body. Alvin's previous self had awakened his magic core at the early age of two years but he did not have any interest in practicing magic and Elena also did not force him since he was a kid.

So even though he had awakened his magic core, he did not even open his sea of consciousness until now.

Alvin sat cross legged on the bed and started to meditate in the same way Elena taught him when he was a kid. He concentrated all his attention on his heart and cleared his mind of any unnecessary thoughts.
