It had been almost a month since we moved into our new house, and I would be resuming school soon at Orland High School. On Monday morning, I was still sleeping at 6:30 am when my mom came to wake me up. "Sophia! Sophia!" she yelled, entering my room. "Wake up, or you'll be late for school." "Mom," I said in a sleepy tone, "I'll be downstairs." Mom left the room, and I sluggishly got out of bed to get ready for school. "Oh no, why does today have to be Monday?" I thought to myself. I was enjoying being in la-la land.
I dressed up in my favorite maroon-colored off-shoulder dress and went downstairs. "Good morning, Mom," I greeted. "Good morning, sweetheart," Mom replied, pecking me on the forehead. "What are we having for breakfast?" I asked. "Toasted bread and scrambled eggs," she replied. "That's nice," I said, joining Mom in making breakfast. We sat down at the dining table and ate. After eating, Mom told our personal chauffeur to drop me off at school.
On getting to Orland High, my new school, the environment was impressive. I got out of the car and headed for the Proprietress's office, where she called in the Principal, a middle-aged man she called Mr. Derick, to come and take me to my class. "Good morning, Mr. Derick," I said to my Principal. "Good morning, young lady. How are you?" he replied. "I'm fine," I said. The walk to my class was silent afterward.
On getting to my class, the Principal told my new classmates that they had a new girl in their midst. "Please introduce yourself," Mr. Derick said to me. "Hello everyone, my name is Sophia Anderson, but you can call me Sophie for short. Nice to meet you all." "Same here," they chorused. I was assigned a seat next to a tall, blonde girl who introduced herself as Olive Lane.
During break, Olive and I went out for lunch. While returning to class, I bumped into a guy who was holding a cup of smoothie, and it splashed all over my dress. "I'm sorry," he said. "Who cares if you are?" I asked, extremely irritated. He just walked past me without saying a word. "How dare he? So rude and arrogant. Who does he think he is?" I said angrily. Olive accompanied me to the washroom to clean up my dress. "Sophia, you just made a really big mistake by yelling at him," Olive said. "He is the only child and heir to the owner of this school and could choose to get you expelled if he so pleases." "Oh my goodness, what did I just do?" I thought. I didn't really mean what I said; I was just upset because this dress is my favorite.
We had a play to act out in Literature class, and we were paired by our Literature teacher. As she called the names, she got to mine and called out, "Sophia Anderson and Raymond Michael, you will be working together." I asked Olive who Raymond was, and she told me he was the Proprietress's son. "Holy moly, you mean the same one I was kinda rude to?" I asked. "Yeah," she replied. "Well, it can't be that bad. I guess this is my opportunity to apologize." "Hi," I said as I walked up to him. "I just wanted to say I'm really sorry." "You're the rude girl from the cafeteria, right?" he asked coldly. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to be rude to you. It's just that I get irrational about things like that. This dress is my favorite." "Oh, I see," he remarked. "Anyways, I forgive you," he replied. "Are you serious?" I asked. "Of course," he replied. "Thank you," I said to him.
So, we were paired together to work on the play. "When should we begin?" I asked nervously. "Now?" he replied, more like a question. "Alright then, let's begin," I said.
I got home really exhausted. I went to my room, freshened up, went downstairs to eat, and then decided to go on Instagram. I saw Andy's message: "Stephanie and I are now dating." Stephanie called shortly with the same information. I was so happy for them. After chatting for a while, I went offline. I took out my diary and started recording all my experiences on my first day in my new school.
Mom came back later in the evening and asked me how my first day at school went. I told her everything that happened in school that day.
As the days went by, I settled into my new school and made more friends. Raymond and I worked well together on our Literature project, and our friendship grew stronger. We would often meet at the library to discuss our project and share ideas.
One day, while we were working on our project, Olive joined us and suggested we take a break. We decided to grab some snacks from the cafeteria. As we walked in, I saw a group of students staring at us. I felt a bit self-conscious, but Raymond just smiled and waved at them.
After our snack break, we headed back to the library to continue working on our project. As we sat down, Raymond turned to me and said, "You know, Sophie, I'm really glad we're working together on this project. You're a great partner." I smiled and thanked him.
