The moment they stepped beyond the gate, the world felt different.
It wasn't like before. The air didn't feel thick with pressure, and there were no strange whispers. It was just… calm. But this calmness, it felt like the calm before a storm.
Ren looked around. They were standing in a vast, open landscape. The ground was covered in soft, green grass that stretched far into the distance. A few trees dotted the area, and in the farthest corner, a large mountain loomed, its peak hidden by the clouds.
"This place… it's peaceful," Ren said, though there was a hint of doubt in his voice. Peaceful, yes, but there was something about it that felt wrong. Like it was too calm.
Sora glanced around, her eyes sharp. "I don't trust it. It's too perfect."
Hina nodded. "We need to stay alert. This place may seem calm, but nothing is ever what it seems."
They walked forward, staying close to each other. The further they went, the more the silence grew. There were no animals, no insects. It was like the world was holding its breath, waiting for something.
As they moved, Ren couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Every step he took felt heavier than the last. His mark flared on his hand, but there was no sign of danger. Still, something was coming. He could feel it in his bones.
Then, without warning, the ground beneath them shook. It was sudden and violent, throwing them off balance. Ren quickly caught himself, his heart pounding in his chest.
"What was that?" Sora asked, looking around frantically.
Ren didn't answer. Instead, he looked to Hina, who was already staring at the horizon. Her eyes narrowed as she took a step forward.
"There," she said quietly.
Ren and Sora followed her gaze. Far in the distance, dark clouds were gathering. They moved quickly, swirling together as if they were alive. And from within those clouds, there was a flicker of something. A shadow, larger than anything they'd seen before.
"That's not normal," Sora whispered.
"No," Hina said, her voice tense. "We need to move. Now."
They ran. The ground trembled beneath their feet, the shaking growing stronger as they neared the mountain. The clouds above them darkened, and the air became thick and oppressive. Ren could feel the weight of it pressing down on him.
Finally, they reached the foot of the mountain. There, in the shadow of the peak, stood an ancient stone door, covered in strange symbols. It looked like it had been there for centuries, untouched by time.
"The door," Ren said, his voice barely above a whisper. "We need to go through."
Hina nodded, her expression hard. "This is it. Whatever lies beyond this door, we need to face it."
Ren reached out, placing his hand on the cold stone. The moment he touched it, the door creaked open, revealing a dark passage. The air inside felt heavy, like it was filled with the weight of years of secrets.
They stepped through.
Inside, the passage was narrow, and the walls were lined with strange markings. The deeper they went, the colder it became. Ren could feel his breath freezing in the air. His mark flared once more, but this time, it was like it was pushing against something.
The walls closed in around them, and Ren felt like the very space was alive. It was as though the mountain itself was a living, breathing entity, watching them. The passage seemed endless, winding deeper and deeper.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them shifted. The walls trembled, and a low, rumbling sound echoed through the tunnel. Ren's heart skipped a beat.
"Move!" Hina shouted, and they all ran.
The tunnel seemed to stretch on forever, but the rumbling grew louder, and the walls started to crack. The stones began to crumble, falling away as if the mountain was collapsing around them.
Ren's mark burned with a sharp intensity. He could feel something—no, someone—coming for them. The darkness ahead shifted, and a figure stepped into view.
It was a shadow, its body shifting in the darkness, its eyes glowing a bright, eerie red.
"You shouldn't have come here," it said, its voice like a thousand whispers combined into one.
Ren's heart pounded, but he stood his ground. "We have to. We need to know the truth."
The shadow laughed, a cold, hollow sound. "The truth? You are not ready for the truth. You never will be."
Ren clenched his fists. "We will face whatever it is, together."
The shadow moved forward, its form twisting as it approached them. Its eyes gleamed with malice, and the air grew colder with each step it took.
"Then face this," it hissed.
Suddenly, it lunged, a dark wave of energy spilling from its form.
Ren didn't hesitate. He reached out with his power, the mark on his hand flaring with light. A pulse of energy shot forward, meeting the shadow's dark wave head-on.
The two forces clashed, filling the passage with a blinding light.
Ren's body shook, but he stood firm, refusing to give up.
The shadow recoiled, its form flickering. "Impossible… How are you—?"
Ren's eyes blazed with determination. "I will face the truth, no matter what."
The shadow howled in fury, but Ren's power surged. With a final push, the darkness was shattered, and the shadow was gone.
The passage fell silent.
Hina and Sora stood behind him, their marks glowing faintly in the dark.
"We're not done yet," Ren said, his voice steady despite the exhaustion he felt.
Hina nodded. "No. This is only the beginning."
And with that, they moved forward, deeper into the mountain, towards whatever truth awaited them next.
