Rein spent quite long during the days traveling in the company of this lady he knew as Elara. Healer and scholar, she knew what the beauties of human life looked like after a war between humans and dragons; unlike him, who became kindled with the flames of vengeance, she lived hers dedicated to mending the wounds of war.
Rein's view began to change with the assistance of Elara. He helped in the reconstruction of the village which was burnt down by dragon fire in the company of those whom he had previously considered foes. Initially upon arrival, they eyed him suspiciously but gradually Rein proved himself. He spoke nothing of his past deeds, did not proffer a justification as to why he was acting the way he was, but he simply worked.
Days transitioned into months, and gradually the soul of Rein was unburdened. He started realizing redemption was not about wiping out the past but living in a future-honoring way. The past would remain there, but it did not have to define him.
One evening, sitting by the newly kindled fire with Elara, Rein spoke in a soft but steady voice. "I don't think I could ever completely forgive myself for what I've done, but I know I must try. I want to make things right-if not for the world, then for the people in it."
Elara smiled softly. "You've already begun."
