Kai's POV
The first thing I noticed was the weightlessness in my body.
My chest rose and fell easily, free of pain, free of struggle.
Slowly, I opened my eyes — only to be greeted by a soft golden ceiling, adorned with intricate patterns that pulsed faintly with magic.
Where…?
A cool hand pressed against my forehead, pulling me back from my daze.
"You're finally awake," a gentle voice said.
I turned my head slightly and saw her — Rias Gremory.
The crimson-haired princess of the Underworld herself, looking at me with relief and a strange tenderness that stirred something deep inside me.
"You've been unconscious for three days," she said, her smile faint but beautiful. "I was starting to worry."
I tried to sit up, but she lightly pushed me back down.
"Rest first. Your body is still adapting."
Adapting...?
I glanced at my hands. They looked the same, yet different.
Power hummed quietly under my skin, a power I had never felt before — as if the very world itself whispered to me.
I had changed.
No... I had evolved.
As if sensing my confusion, Rias leaned closer.
"I reincarnated you as my Pawn," she said, her voice a soft confession. "It took all eight of my regular pawn pieces... and even a Mutation piece."
My breath caught.
Mutation pieces were rare — said to be given only to those with potential beyond the ordinary.
For her to use it on me...
"Why...?" I asked, my voice rough and dry.
Rias smiled — a smile filled with something between affection and instinct.
"Because... when I found you, I knew you were meant to be mine."
My heart skipped a beat.
Before I could respond, the door creaked open.
Three figures entered:
A silver-haired boy with sharp blue eyes — Kiba Yuuto.
A petite white-haired girl with golden cat-like eyes — Koneko Toujou.
And finally, a stunning black-haired woman whose very presence felt electric — Akeno Himejima.
"Kai," Rias said, her voice formal now, "these are your comrades. My peerage — your new family."
The three of them smiled politely, though I caught the brief flicker of curiosity — and something deeper — in Akeno's violet gaze.
"You'll be living with us now," Rias said warmly.
"And soon, we'll help you train... to unlock your true potential."
My true potential...
Deep inside my chest, something stirred —
A faint roar, a breath of icy wind, a flash of golden light.
Something ancient… something hungry.
The Frost King had awakened.
And the world would soon know it.
