Jace's heart hammered against his ribs as he burst through Talia's cottage door. The small living room stood empty, flipped chairs and scattered books telling a story of struggle. Her scent lingered—fear mixed with something else he couldn't name. "Talia!" he called out, knowing she wouldn't answer.
He dropped to his knees beside her bed, pressing his nose to the cloth. The trail was fresh, maybe an hour old. But underneath her familiar vanilla smell was something that made his wolf growl with recognition.
