Steve smiled, his gaze locked on the necklace dangling delicately from Fiona's hand.
She held it up for him to see, her fingers curled around the chain as it swayed slightly with the breeze.
There was a softness in his eyes, a distant warmth as the corners of his lips tugged upward. The smile remained etched on his face, unmoving, as though he couldn't believe what he was looking at.
Then he let out a weary chuckle. It escaped his lips like a breath he'd been holding all day, followed by a long, tired sigh.
"Huh." he exhaled, his voice low.
"I don't believe it. She actually made it out."
Fiona stayed smiling. Her voice sparked with excitement.
"Yeah. She did. This is great. She made it out." She leaned forward a bit, pointing toward a patch of disrupted greenery.
"And from what it looks like, she was passing through here in a hurry. Look at the shrubs there. They're distorted. Almost like someone ran through them. It could have been her trying to make a run for it."
