Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

New Moon Night

The forest was dark, the trees like skeletal fingers reaching for the sky. Lena crouched behind a bush, her heart racing. She'd been running for hours, but she knew she couldn't stop now. The pack was close.

She'd always been different. Felt things others didn't. Heard whispers in the wind. And tonight, under the new moon, she'd shifted for the first time. The pain still lingered, a burning in her veins.

Lena took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She'd been warned about the Shadow Pack, how they'd hunt her down if they knew what she was. But she had to find them. Needed to know if she was truly alone.

A twig snapped behind her. Lena spun around, her senses on high alert. A figure emerged from the shadows, eyes glowing in the dark.

"You're one of us," a low voice growled.

Lena's instincts screamed at her to run. But something about the stranger's tone made her hesitate.

"Who are you?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

The figure took a step closer. "I'm Kael. And you're in our territory."

The Pack's Den:

Lena's heart skipped a beat as Kael's eyes seemed to bore into her soul. She could feel his gaze like a physical touch, making her skin prickle. But she stood her ground, trying to look braver than she felt.

"What do you want from me?" she asked, trying to sound firm.

Kael's expression didn't change, but his voice softened slightly. "You need to come with me. The pack's been watching you. We know what you are."

Lena's instincts screamed at her to run, but her curiosity kept her rooted. What did he mean by "the pack"? And what did they want from her?

Kael turned and began walking, expecting Lena to follow. She hesitated for a moment, then trailed after him. The forest seemed to grow darker, the trees twisting around them like a tunnel.

As they walked, Lena noticed the way Kael moved with a fluid ease, his senses alert. She realized he was tracking, following a path only he could see.

After what felt like hours, they reached a clearing. In the center stood an old, abandoned mine, its entrance hidden behind a tangle of vines.

"Welcome to our den," Kael said, his voice low.

Lena's heart raced as she followed Kael into the mine. The air inside was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else... something wild.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw them. A group of people, all with the same glowing eyes as Kael. They watched her with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion.

"Who are you?" one of them asked, stepping forward.

Lena took a deep breath. "I'm Lena. And I'm... like you, I think."

The pack exchanged glances, their faces unreadable. But Kael's expression seemed to hold a hint of curiosity.

"What makes you think that?" he asked.

Lena hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about the pack's energy made her feel like she could trust them.

"I've been having... visions," she said. "And tonight, I shifted for the first time."

The pack's reaction was immediate. They closed in around her, their eyes burning with intensity.

"You've got the mark," one of them growled. "You're one of us, all right."

The pack surrounded Lena, their faces a blur of curiosity and suspicion. Kael stood at the forefront, his eyes narrowing as he studied her.

"What do you mean by 'the mark'?" Lena asked, feeling a shiver run down her spine.

Kael's gaze seemed to bore into her soul. "You're a Lycan. Born with the gene. And the visions you've been having... they're probably the callings."

Lena's mind reeled. Lycan? Gene? Callings? She had so many questions, but before she could ask any, a woman with piercing green eyes stepped forward.

"I'm Aria," the woman said. "Alpha of this pack. We've been tracking you, Lena. You have a unique aura about you. One that suggests you might be the key to our survival."

Lena's confusion deepened. "Survival? What do you mean?"

Aria's expression turned grave. "Our pack's been dying out. We're inbred, and the gene's weakening. But you... you might be the fresh blood we need."

Kael's eyes locked onto Lena's, and for a moment, she felt like he could see right through her. "We'll need to run some tests," he said. "See if you're compatible with our pack."

Lena's instincts screamed at her to flee, but something about the pack's desperation resonated with her. She nodded, and Aria smiled, a fierce glint in her eye.

"Welcome to the pack, Lena. For now, you'll stay with us. Learn our ways. And see if you're truly one of us."

As the pack closed in around her, Lena felt a sense of belonging she'd never known before. But she couldn't shake the feeling that she was walking into something much bigger than herself.

The pack began to murmur among themselves, their voices hushed but excited. Lena's mind whirled with questions, but before she could ask any, Aria gestured to Kael.

"Show Lena to her quarters," Aria said. "We'll begin the tests tomorrow."

Kael nodded and led Lena deeper into the mine, the darkness swallowing them whole. As they walked, Lena realized she was completely at the mercy of this pack. But something about Kael's quiet strength made her feel like she might just be safe with them.

"So," Lena said, breaking the silence. "What's the pack's story?"

Kael's eyes flickered with amusement. "That's a tale for another time, Lena. For now, let's just say we're survivors. And we're not going down without a fight."

As Kael led Lena through the winding tunnels of the mine, the air grew thick with the scent of damp earth and smoke. They passed by makeshift rooms, each one lit by flickering candles or lanterns. Lena caught glimpses of pack members going about their daily lives, their faces a mix of curiosity and suspicion.

Finally, Kael stopped in front of a small room, the door slightly ajar. "This is your quarters," he said, pushing the door open.

Lena stepped inside, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. The room was small, with a single bed and a wooden chest in the corner. A small window high up on the wall let in a sliver of moonlight.

"It's... cozy," Lena said, trying to sound grateful.

Kael nodded, his expression neutral. "You'll be safe here. For now, rest. Tomorrow will be... enlightening."

Lena raised an eyebrow, but Kael just turned and walked away, leaving her alone in the room.

As the door closed behind him, Lena felt a surge of uncertainty. What had she gotten herself into? She paced around the room, trying to process everything that had happened.

But despite the strangeness of it all, she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd finally found something she'd been searching for her whole life.

Lena's thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. "Hey, it's Elara. I brought some clothes and stuff. Can I come in?"

Lena opened the door to find a young woman with a bright smile and a messy bun. Elara handed Lena a bundle of clothes and a towel.

"Thanks," Lena said, feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Elara nodded. "You're going to fit in just fine. We're a bit of a quirky pack, but we're family."

As Elara chatted on, Lena found herself relaxing in the other woman's presence. Maybe this pack thing wouldn't be so bad after all.

But just as she was starting to feel at ease, Lena heard a low growl coming from outside the room. Elara's eyes flicked towards the door, and her expression turned serious.

"What's that?" Lena asked, her heart racing.

Elara's voice dropped to a whisper. "That's Ryker. He's... not happy about your arrival."

Lena's instincts screamed at her to be cautious. She glanced at the door, wondering what lay beyond it.
