Chapter 20 - Cracks In The Foundation

The tension in the office grew thicker with each passing day. The whispers hadn't stopped—in fact, they only grew louder.

Elena did her best to drown them out, to pretend she didn't hear the hushed conversations that fell silent whenever she walked by. But the looks, the glances, the raised eyebrows…they were impossible to ignore.

Drew noticed it too. He had always been good at maintaining his composure, his professional mask firmly in place.

But lately, Elena could see the cracks. His jaw clenched a little tighter, his eyes a shade darker when he caught the glances cast their way. She knew it was only a matter of time before something gave.

It happened on a Wednesday morning, during the weekly board meeting. The room was packed with department heads, managers, and senior staff.

Elena sat beside Drew as always, her notebook open and pen poised. The meeting progressed as usual, reports and updates filtering through the room with the monotonous hum of routine.

That is, until Mr. Hargrove—the head of Human Resources—cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses.

"I'd like to bring up a matter of concern," he began, his voice carrying a weight that made the room go still. "There have been…rumors circulating around the office regarding certain relationships that may not align with company policy."

Elena's heart stopped. She felt Drew tense beside her, his hand subtly clenching into a fist beneath the table.

Mr. Hargrove's gaze drifted toward them, and though he didn't say their names, it was clear who his words were aimed at.

"We take professionalism very seriously here," he continued, his eyes scanning the room. "And any breach of conduct will be handled accordingly."

The silence was suffocating. Elena stared at her notepad, her vision blurring.

Her fingers trembled, and she felt Drew's hand slip under the table, his fingers entwining with hers for just a moment—a fleeting gesture of solidarity.

The meeting continued, but Elena barely heard a word. When it finally ended, people filed out quietly, casting furtive glances in their direction.

Drew didn't move. He sat still, his gaze fixed straight ahead, his hand still clasped around hers.

When the room finally emptied, he turned to her. "Are you okay?"

Elena swallowed hard, nodding even though her hands shook. "I—I didn't think it would get this bad."

Drew's jaw tightened. "We'll fix it."

"How?" she asked, her voice breaking. "It's not just rumors anymore…they know."

He squeezed her hand. "I don't care who knows."

His words were fierce, unyielding. For a moment, it gave her strength. But reality seeped back in quickly. They weren't just fighting whispers anymore—they were fighting the entire structure of the company's expectations.

Later that evening, Drew invited her over. They sat on his couch, the city lights stretching out through the window.

He poured them both a glass of wine, his hands steady despite the chaos of the day.

"I've been thinking," he began, his voice soft but steady. "Maybe it's time we stopped hiding."

Elena stared at him, her heart thudding. "You mean…?"

He nodded. "I'm tired of sneaking around. I'm tired of pretending I don't feel the way I do." His eyes met hers, burning with conviction. "I love you, Elena. And I'm not going to hide that anymore."

The words hung in the air, heavy and sweet. Elena's breath caught in her throat. She had known it—she had felt it—but hearing it was different. Hearing it made it real.

"I love you too," she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of it. "But what about the company? What about everything?"

Drew leaned forward, cupping her face in his hands. "We'll face it. Together."

His lips met hers, sealing the promise. For a moment, the world outside didn't matter. Not the rumors, not the whispers, not the looming consequences. It was just them, tangled in the certainty of each other.

But even as she kissed him back, Elena knew the fight was far from over.

A storm was brewing, she thought but dispersed it.
