Chapter 4 - The Philosophy of the Fake

"It's a fake."

At that moment, everyone's eyes were focused on Han Do-jae. Han Do-jae's answer ended with a short answer. Most of the kids frowned, and Jo Won-ho looked interested in his student's amusing answer after a long time.

"Fake?" "yes." "It's not a luxury product, it's a fake... What does that mean?"

It wasn't a critical tone. Jo Won-ho asked while rubbing his chin, seeming genuinely curious. 'I can't forget it even after several years.'

Five years ago, no, six years ago. After my debut, there was a time when I was worried because no matter how much I practiced on my own, my acting skills did not improve. I once confided in a senior actor with whom I was close that I was worried about the future. -Acting is fake, fake- That's what my senior, who was very drunk at the time, said. I just said that because it suddenly occurred to me. I knew it wasn't an ordinary answer, but I didn't know Jo Won-ho would like it this much. Iopened my mouth, quietly recalling that place at that time.

"An actor can't be the character in the script, but he can be the character." "Isn't that just a pun?"

Han Do-jae immediately answered Jo Won-ho, who tilted his head and asked back.

"Fakes always try to be the real deal. If they get caught with this, they change this. If they get caught with that, they change that. I think that's how they gradually become so similar that you can't tell them apart from the real thing."

That is because acting ultimately begins with imitating the feelings and actions of a character in a certain situation. The senior raised his voice that day, asking why an actor must have good observation skills.

"...keep going."

Jo Won-ho nodded and urged, "It suits your taste." This answer seemed to have caught Jo Won-ho's attention, as he already liked funny answers. Actually, I thought that Han Do-jae was impressed when he heard this idea at the time. So I thought that might be the case.

"If you can't find any difference in the product other than the factory number even though it came from such a different factory, and if no one can tell the difference even if you put it in a department store, can you call it a counterfeit any longer?" 'Look at this.'

Could it be because I felt such thrilling excitement after a long time? Goosebumps ran down Jo Won-ho's entire body. I thought it was a bit of an arrogant answer for a freshman. When I heard it, it wasn't just an empty answer. This was an answer that could only be arrived at after much thought. Since he himself was an actor who had been on stage, he could understand what the student was saying.

"I think actors are the same. In the process of trying to become that character, they will get a lot of flak from the director and the audience."

Criticism is an inevitable fate for actors.

"If you change them one by one and try to understand the character deep down inside... When it gets to the point where you can't tell the difference between the character and the actor even if you put them in a real department store, then that's it."

Han Do-jae's speech became faster without him realizing it.

"Now I'm an actor who can act. Can't I do it?"

Having said that, Han Do-jae kept his mouth shut. When Han Do-jae finished speaking, the children in the classroom who were listening opened their mouths wide.

Bam

Woo Ji-ho poked Han Do-jae in the side with his elbow. Looking at it, "Ooh." ..he had a somewhat burdened expression and was raising his thumb. It was exactly the look on his face that said, 'How can you think like that?" Looking at that expression, a small smile came out.

"That's an interesting answer." Jo Won-ho said with a smile, looking very satisfied. "Yes. Fake, genuine. If you can't tell the difference except for the serial number, then you can no longer tell the value of the genuine from the fake."

Jo Won-ho nodded as if he was satisfied. And then I stopped asking again and again.

"What is acting theory? Just think of it as learning 'what acting is." He thought this answer was enough and went on to introduce the class. "Then next question. What do you think is the most important thing in acting?" "line?" "It's about controlling your emotions!"

Jo Won-ho nodded as if he agreed with that, but didn't say anything. Then, Im Hyuk raised his hand and answered.

"Yeah, expression."

Jo Won-ho's expression brightened as he immediately turned his head towards Im Hyeok. Lim Hyuk. It was a person that Han Do-jae remembered clearly. Although she was less well-known than the two stars Kang Ee-shin and Yoon Se-ri in Sky Preview, she was already rumored to be the ace among the kids in terms of skill. In his past life, he continued to show top-tier performance throughout the three years of Heaven's Premonition. Even after becoming an adult, he was an actor who had established himself with solid fundamentals and was consistently cast in movies, although he was not a lead actor. His short, bleached hair really stands out, but his face underneath is also quite handsome. After he became an adult with a stocky physique, he stood out in martial arts and was called upon by many places. 'He's already been in great shape since he was seventeen.'

Im Hyuk raised one corner of his mouth as if he was satisfied with Jo Won-ho's expression.

"The core of acting that encompasses all of the answers above is expression. No matter what you're acting, expressing the intention contained in the scenario to the audience is acting. Let's look at an example."

The audiovisual materials prepared by Jo Won-ho were played on the screen at the front of the classroom. 'expression....'

Han Do-jae became lost in thought after hearing Jo Won-ho's words. Although he has been to many drama sets, expression is still an area that he has to work on. Moreover, it was expressed that each director had different beliefs. Can't you just express it exactly as it is written in the scenario? After hearing that, I went to another site and did exactly what was in the script, and got scolded. They say that to be first-class, you have to express things that are outside the scenario. While Han Do-jae was lost in thought, Jo Won-ho clapped loudly in front of him.

"So, the 'Acting Theory' class that I teach will be divided into two major topics, the first and second semesters."

After saying that, Jo Won-ho looked around at the children. Then, Jo Won-ho's gaze stopped at Handojae.

"Handojae and Imhyeok, thank you for giving us good answers today. Shall you two come forward for a moment?"

The two people sitting opposite each other made eye contact for a moment and then stepped forward. Jo Won-ho handed over two pieces of paper he had prepared in advance to Han Do-jae and Im Hyeok. 'Is this a script?'

Without any time to be puzzled, Jo Won-ho continued speaking.

"You have three minutes from now. Go back to your seats and get ready."

I looked down at the paper again at Jo Won-ho's sudden words. A script consisting only of dialogue from one character, with brief situations. Im Hyuk glared at Han Do-jae for a moment and then quickly returned to his seat. As three minutes was a short time, Han Do-jae also hurried to his seat.

"Hey! Gently-" One of Lim Hyuk's friends shouted. A loud laughter spread around them. As Im Hyuk approached, everything became quiet in an instant. As if no one wanted to disturb his concentration.

"Did Han Do-jae get poisoned during his initiation ceremony?" "I think it wasn't that great back then. I couldn't even hear the first lines very well. And my pronunciation was terrible." "If you pronounce it, it's Im Hyuk."

The kids whispered quietly and glanced at Handojae and Imhyeok.

"Let's keep quiet while the two friends get ready." The classroom immediately became quiet after Jo Won-ho's words. "Don't feel pressured because you won't be graded, just act in your own style. You can hear the lines, so don't be too eager to memorize them."

There was no way that the kids would listen to the advice not to feel burdened. The classroom was already quietly heating up with the two people's acting competition. The burden felt by the parties has increased. As soon as the two sat down, they buried their heads in the script and became absorbed in it. Han Do-jae couldn't even remember if Jo Won-ho had asked him to do something like this in the first class. Perhaps, even if the same situation had occurred before the regression, he would not have been the target. It didn't matter what the purpose of this impromptu assignment was. This was also an opportunity to have one's acting skills evaluated to some extent. Han Do-jae took out a pen from his pencil case and read the script with concentration. The three minutes passed quickly. Jo Won-ho, leaning in front of the podium, looked back and forth between Im Hyeok and Han Do-jae. Lim Hyuk kept muttering quickly and staring at the script as if it was going to break. He was analyzing very passionately, even making quick hand gestures. On the other hand, Han Do-jae was practicing his lines by holding a pen and continuously writing something on the script. The two's attitudes toward the script were starkly different.

"Okay. Three minutes are up. You two, forward."

At Jo Won-ho's words, the two people got up from their seats and came forward. Even as he came forward, he never took his eyes off the script.

"Who will go first?" "I'll go first."

Lim Hyuk answered Jo Won-ho's question right away.

"Okay. Handojae, please step back a bit."

Jo Won-ho nodded and stood in front of the blackboard with Han Do-jae. Instead of looking at the script further, Han Do-jae focused on Im Hyeok. Lim Hyuk stood in the center of the front of the classroom holding the paper he had received from Jo Won-ho. He took a deep breath through his nose and blurted out his lines without hesitation.

"So. What's the evidence? Did you catch anything?"

From the first line, Im Hyuk's overwhelming physicality was felt. Loud voice and accurate pronunciation. Perhaps because of his tall stature and muscular body, each and every line was filled with power.

"Are you bragging about something like this now? Are you serious?"

He frowned sharply and looked as threatening as a detective from the violent crimes unit. The pronunciation of 30-year-old Im Hyuk was called a textbook for actors. But even at the age of 17, he was already quite caught. It didn't feel awkward at all, as if vocalization using the entire body based on abdominal breathing had already been completely established.

"I told you not to do things that way!"

A loud shout echoed through the classroom and into the hallways.

"I say it again. Bring me every bit of evidence you can find. Got it?"

Im Hyuk's acting ended with an impressive action scene that seemed to be a forced performance. Given that we were given only three minutes, the dialogue wasn't that long.

"Wow... This is killing me." "If Hyuk were to properly play a villain, it would be really scary."

Whether or not they knew about Im Hyuk's skills, they were amazed at his ability to get his lines out in just 3 minutes. In addition, the pronunciation was so accurate that there wasn't a single line that couldn't be heard. He was a skilled player who was called an ace In the midst of all that commotion, Im Hyuk nodded slightly and stepped aside.

Clap clap.

"Thank you for your hard work. Next time."

Jo Won-ho clapped his hands lightly and then looked at Han Do-jae and said. I went forward and stood in the same spot where Im Hyuk had just stood. Han Do-jae's height was still only 176cm. Although he was by no means short, he felt relatively small compared to Im Hyuk, who was already over 180cm tall. I didn't gain as much muscle as Im Hyuk. Even though Im Hyuk was only seventeen and didn't have a large body, he still had some lean muscle, but he looked very different from Han Do Jae, who didn't have any muscle at all. Of course, it will get bigger here in the next three years. Han Do-jae fiddled with his thin arms, which were made up of no exercise at all.

"Big."

Han Do-jae lifted the script lightly and cleared his throat. Jo Won-ho's eyes narrowed as he watched Han Do-jae from behind. 'That thing, Han Do-jae....'

To be exact, I was looking at Han Do-jae's script, which was a mess of lines and circles. 'What do you know about this?
