Chapter 1 - Transmigrating into the body of the ghost king

Gu Yuze could tolerate transmigrating into the body of this damned ghost king but being poor was where he drew the line.

He looked down at the screen again, just in case he did not see it properly but on the small, outdated phone was 24 dollars.

24 dollars. How can a person have only twenty-four dollars in their account, what kind of abject poverty was this? Of all the punishments of his childhood, the one he hated the most was whenever his card was blocked.

Scratch that, what on earth was this messed up situation?

Gu Yuze knew he was going to die early, there was no helping it. His father was a Dao Shi, the head of the Jiangnan Temple, and he had done everything humanely possible to change his fate, but it was not possible. Gu Yuze was destined to have an extraordinary life that would be tragically short-lived.

Just like the Xuanshi star he was born under. It appeared every hundred years, the light incredibly bright in the array of stars, and yet, after an hour, it fell never to be seen again.

He was going to die young. Gu Yuze had first heard this whispered about when he was five years old. He did not die that year, he did not die the next year either. Even when he had a car accident, when his talisman exploded, when he mistakenly summoned the Black Impermanence, he did not die.

Then just when he single-handily defeated the ghost king, the greatest moment that should have brought him so many accolades and respect from those old men that enjoyed yapping about in his ear, he died. Not from an accident, No, his fetal line had just snapped.

Wouldn't those old men think that he had died from exhaustion from fighting the ghost king? Gu Yuze cracked his fingers at the thought. He could even think of a more outrageous thing, what if they make him out to be some kind of martyr and teach lessons for all those little Taoist brats running around?

Just thinking of it made Gu Yuze want to explode.

Even if he died, he should have enough merits to reincarnate into a wealthy family in his next life. He could not fathom why he was penniless and in the body of the ghost king that he had just defeated.

The first Gu Yuze had done after finding he was in another body was to look for a cell phone and check the date. December 2014, Twenty three years earlier. He had not even been born yet? His next course of action was to check for a bank app on the phone, use his fingerprint to open it, and be greeted with 24 dollars.

Gu Yuze got up from the bed, maybe this ghost king was like his father and enjoyed saving his money in large chests in hidden places.

He checked under the bed, in the cabinet, everywhere someone could hide money, but there was nothing. He only had twenty-four dollars to his name. H24 dollars. How can a person have only twenty-four dollars in their account, what kind of abject poverty was this? He crawled out from the bed and stood up, facing the mirror.

The annoyed expression on Gu Yuze's face disappeared as he faced the image on the mirror.

For the last five hours, throughout the entire mountain of Huanshua, Gu Yuze had continuously faced this face. Grey, with cracks across them, a long red tongue rolling down, the yin energy was so powerful, it became tangible, like a black cloak over the shorter figure.

Gu Yuze had never seen anything like it before, it had made him so excited that he rushed forward and attacked. He could recall the adrenaline that flowed in his veins and the rush of pure potent spiritual energy. Just before he was about to vanquish him, two red trails of tears dropped from those lifeless red eyes.

That same pale face was staring right back at him in the mirror, there was a very light pink flush on the skin. He reached out and touched it again. Warm. This was the body of a living human and judging from the year on the phone, twenty three years before he had become a ghost king and had been vanquished by him.

The Ghost King. Why was he in his body, and where was the soul of the future ghost king? And even more surprising was why was his soul so perfectly in place in this body. The reason possession could easily be found out by Taoist Priests because of the imbalance between the soul and the body.

A body was created to house a soul and no two bodies were the same, so why did his soul fit so perfectly into this body?

"Just what kind of Karma ties the both of us together?"

He was a Taoist of the Jiangjan temple, he had more understanding of the average man of things like karma and fate. The way of the heavens, the underworld, and the immortals.

"Who sent me to your body and why?" Gu Yuze muttered as he stared at the image in the mirror.

He wore a faded Taoist uniform, simple, loose-fitting blue trousers paired with a short-sleeved tunic, and a light brown sash was tied around his waist. Gu Yuze took a ribbon on the dressing table and pulled the curly black hair back revealing the full forehead of the Ghost King.

Even though Gu Yuze had verified that this little ghost king was human, the youth in the mirror still had abnormally pale skin. Under the straight and narrow bridge of his nose, his thin lips were straight and pursed, showing a trace of the owner's displeasure.

Gu Yuze took a step forward as he stared at the image. There was a dark gloomy aura clung tightly between his eyebrows. The eyes that stared back at him were the color of used firewood, Ashen, and lifeless.

And yet the face was young. This little ghost king's bone age was just twenty years old. A twenty-year Taoist student. So why?

"What on earth would make you become a ghost king?" There was a whole difference between a malevolent ghost and a ghost king. A ghost king was as rare as the Xuanshi's star.

"And what kind of karma ties the two of us together?" He pondered again as he gazed at the reflection on the screen.

The next second, a loud banging sounded on the door breaking him from his thoughts, "Gu Yuze. I know that you are in there. I can hear you muttering. Open this door now or else."
