"Ok, I think I understand the responsibilities perfectly. I'll be forced to use my own Karma as a startup fund with a generous 1,000-point bonus. In return I'll get a portion of any Karma earned by one of my system wielders."
"That's the general Idea. Yes..."
"Good then my only question for you is. What's your NAME!" It's not hindering communication entirely persay, but if were gonna work in some capacity together. Shouldn't I know it for common decencies sake?" My true thoughts leaking out at my situation. I had thought the man would introduce himself some time into the conversation but apparently not.
"Oh, my bad. Not used to having to actually give out that information. You kind of forget sometimes you know? Especially with most people who are actually worth talking to omniscient in some form." With that comment I felt an invisible arrow pierce my heart. "Anyways, the names Varin. A perfect name for someone as beautiful as me."
Blinking my eyes a few times I considered the self-praise. 'I've seen better in anime.' I couldn't help thinking to myself. Obviously though that isn't what I said. "Hmmm, you indeed have a wonderful... personality..." I couldn't directly compliment the man. It just felt... Well, no more needed to be said. I also wasn't dumb enough to offend this being out of nowhere either.
"So do you have an idea on what department you want to enter from what I explained?" The man asked me, and honestly, I had no idea just yet. The man had listed out over 200 departments from food, to healing, to different forms of fighting, and resource collecting. While working in a very specific department would be nice and easier to figure out in the short time. I found it kind of limiting in what I could achieve. Yes, I was a little bit ambitious. If I was going to dedicate possibly millions of years to something. I wanted to do it right. It's just who I was.
"What department would you recommend if I didn't want to limit myself to just doing a couple of things then? I feel doing the same thing for just a few centuries could lead to boredom quickly. Sooo, do you have any advice for a newbie?" The man smiled in consideration and a flicker of anticipation went across his mouth before it faded with a look of 'ahhhhh, to much trouble, so nevermind.' "Well originally I was thinking of telling you to join the supportive unit as they help all the other departments as a bit of a prank, but i've decided it's a little mean for someone that has been this polite towards me to suffer in that hell. So, I got another suggestion. While it's true that department does the widest range of things. They only get to help another department maybe once every few centuries. You'll be bored most of the time. So, I advise joining the 39th Department."
"Why's that?" I couldn't help but ask.
" If I had to give a specific reason other than the overall environment. As you are part of the Resource redevelopment department you get to pull strings and sometimes get help from other departments if its needed. Also, since you're redeveloping what's been lost. You get to manipulate almost any resource that's needed in those kinds of projects. You'll have a wider range of powers or things you can acquire more easily with your karma. I've heard some of them even keep some towers as pet projects and call them 'Dungeons' I believe. Since you said something about loving tycoon games. I think you'd be a perfect fit."
Thinking about it. The deity was right. If I was bound to do this for centuries. Having a dungeon that could also do my job for me would be really entertaining. Maybe I could train and raise creatures inside of it to accept my 'system' as well. If I was smart about it. Maybe I could even let people who wanted to enter my dungeon accept the 'System' into themselves. That way if anyone went against my work. It would be easy to get rid of them. It would also let my likely have a semi free treasure production feature for my dungeons, and that in itself was a powerful feature. I could totally get whatever I want for my hero by just stating. Oh, this slime drops a mythical weapon that can kill the undead, and even if that doesn't work. I could still create a fair system of drops. I might even be able to sell the tower's services to other system users for a price. Let their followers enter the tower and earn some items for themselves.
"I see you've already understood the implications of what I proposed I see." The man smiled to himself in satisfaction. "Also try to give me a discount in the future for the help, okay?" Agreeing to the request. I put my application in for approval. With that we waited for a couple seconds before a new person came to get me out of a crack in the space time continuum. A woman with solid black hair and glasses, and honestly, I could admit. She was attractive. Sadly, I was probably worth less than an ant to the lady.
"Is this the new employee?" The woman asked Varin. With a smirk the man got up and bowed to her. "He's all yours Milady." With a snort of disdain, I found myself in a chair one moment and gone now standing in the middle of an employee housing unit of some sort. "I'll be back tomorrow to give you the general run down of how things operate here. Theres a lot of rules so we'll start on a probation period of sorts at first. Can't have you making a mess of some poor world out there after all. Once we're sure you understand your job we'll let you work independently. For now, though..." With a softening of her expression, she stared me directly in the eyes. "Rest. I'm sure it's been a long day. Dying and all that. Honestly, it's been so long ago I don't really remember my own death, but I remember it messed with my mind for quite a long time. So, try to relax as much as you can right now and get into the swing of things."
With that she was gone, and just like she said. I was left with myself to think about my death. The pain, still so real, but something I couldn't let get in the way of this second chance of mine.
