Chapter 77 - No Haven

AYASHA'S POV

I stared at Mingan across the table, my mind racing through the implications of everything he'd just revealed. The adoption papers sat between us like a trap waiting to spring.

I couldn't trust him. Not truly. Everything about the Elder Prince was too neat, too measured. Even his grief felt sculpted, like a dagger carved from sentiment and honed for strategy. Maybe he wasn't lying, but that didn't mean he was honest either.

And yet...

What choices did I really have?

If I refused him and went to the high courts—pleaded with House Sedimo, or begged favor from the Ireshis or the Garnel line—I'd be throwing myself into the lion's mouth. No matter how they spun it, supporting me after my attempted strike at Nahuel was no small gesture. It was backing a girl the King would call a traitor, maybe even a would-be assassin. It was an invitation to war.
