"Hello," Lambert answered the phone, his voice unusually gentle. "Grandpa, when did you wake up? I'll come to see you right away."
The old man had been in another hospital, in a deep coma for a long time. Before falling unconscious, he had kept insisting on modifying his will, but no matter how hard they tried, his lawyer couldn't be reached.
The old man hung on to life stubbornly, unwilling to leave, suffering in the hospital for a long time.
"Lambert, grandpa misses you. Come see me, don't trouble your mom and Mia. They're the closest to you," the old man said, his words particularly clear and forceful, enough for Jennifer and Mia to hear distinctly.
Lambert's eyes tightened as he motioned for Ethan to step aside and make way for them. He responded to his grandfather, "I'll be there soon, Grandpa. Wait for me."
After hanging up, Jennifer, not giving up, mocked him coldly: "Lambert, people who stir up a storm must have some ability. Holding a tiny bit of shares means nothing; what matters is who can bring the most benefit to the Wenshte Group. We're a family. When it's time to take a stand, you cannot hesitate. I don't like your indecisive way of handling things. I'm very dissatisfied with your actions today. There will be a shareholders' meeting in a few days to deal with your father's shares."
"Got it." No matter how pleased Jennifer was, Lambert always answered coldly, appearing utterly indifferent, making her every proud moment feel like a clown performing a monologue.
Jennifer helped Mia leave, and throughout the whole time, Mia didn't say a word, nor dared to make eye contact with Lambert.
He seemed to be planning something important and didn't seem to care about her at all. She feared that Lambert might remove any concerns by taking the child's life. After thinking it over, she decided it was safer to stay with Jennifer, at least Jennifer genuinely wanted her to have the child.
After they left, Lambert urgently instructed Ethan, "Go to Grandpa's place."
The old man had never acknowledged Jennifer as Lambert's mother because she was his stepmother, not his biological mother. But today, it was clear he wanted to send Jennifer away.
"Alright, Master Wenshte, don't worry, we're on our way," Ethan said, pushing the wheelchair with rapid steps.
Arriving at the hospital, most of Jennifer's people had left, and the guards outside the room were gone.
He pushed open the door, and the old man was hooked up to numerous tubes, his breath faint, struggling with every movement. When he saw Lambert, he smiled in relief and waved him over.
Ethan stood by the door, his large frame nearly blocking it.
Lambert stood up from the wheelchair and took two steps to the bedside. "Grandpa, you will get better. Your great-grandson hasn't been born yet. Didn't you say you wanted to meet him? It'll be soon."
The old man's condition had worsened, and Lambert's heart ached as he looked at him.
"Lambert, my good grandson, I fear I won't live to see your child's birth. This is the gift I prepared for the child. Take it." The old man placed a USB drive into Lambert's hand, tears in his eyes, reluctant to let go.
"Grandpa," Lambert gripped it tightly, like a child, his eyes slightly moist.
"Your father's lawyer is from City D. Remember to find him; he has two versions of the will," the old man said after a few words, struggling to breathe, needing to wear an oxygen mask.
"I know, Grandpa. Don't worry, I'll find him," Lambert reassured him.
Jennifer had thought of the possibility of the old man having a will when she learned that Robert Wenshte had one. She'd made considerable efforts to investigate, but whenever she asked, the old man claimed to know nothing.
She could only try with the lawyer, but the old man's lawyer did not meet a good end.
"Grandpa," Lambert called again, but the old man didn't respond. His eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
"Wenshte Young Master, the lady will arrive soon. Please prepare yourself," Ethan said, entering and pushing the wheelchair closer.
Lambert sat in the wheelchair, still holding onto the old man's hand, but there was no response.
Before Jennifer arrived, they left the hospital.
Lambert ordered Ethan to send someone to City D to find Lawyer Liu's family and keep everything quiet for now.
…
A month later, Wenshte Family received more good news: Jonathan's fiancée, Hannah, was pregnant with a boy. The whole family rushed to the hospital, disturbing the old man again, and his condition worsened.
Since their last meeting, Jennifer had been unable to get any answers from the old man. She secretly bribed his attending doctor, beginning to stop his medication and replacing his treatment with nutritional fluids. His condition worsened day by day, and now he was on the verge of death.
The Ferguson family had made the work in vain. The old man was in a deep coma and unresponsive.
"The shares must be related to the great-grandson, otherwise, Jennifer wouldn't treat Mia like a treasure. Now, everything is ready, we just need the right moment. Once Mia's child is gone, we'll be the biggest winners," Ferguson deliberately said this to Hannah in the car as they left the hospital.
Jonathan held a grudge against Lambert, pulling Hannah's hand and taking the opportunity to make a suggestion: "Only William can influence Mia now. Whether we can have wealth and power depends on your treasure. You must figure out how to make Mia lose her child."
Hannah hated Mia. To this day, Mia had no title, no child, and had been hiding it from Jonathan's family. She had to seize this opportunity to become Jonathan's rightful wife, and then, even if things were exposed, it would be too late for Jonathan to do anything about it.
"Don't worry, I'll make plans when I get home. I'll figure something out. You just have to keep Lambert occupied, he's a madman."
"Don't worry, I have my ways." Jonathan patted Hannah's shoulder, a sinister smile playing on his lips.
By evening, a strong wind blew, the temperature dropped, and a storm was brewing. Lightning struck, and the sky darkened.
"Grandpa's time is almost up, he's just holding on by a thread. He wants to see Master Lambert."
The shocking news spread from the hospital. Within seconds, everyone from the Wenshte Family rushed to the hospital in a panic.
"Grandpa's lawyer is here with the will. The old man wants to amend the will."
Jennifer, sitting at home, heard the news from her subordinates and immediately grabbed her car keys and rushed out of the villa.
Everyone had forgotten about Mia, except Lambert, who was still worried about her safety. He had Ethan go check on her along the way.
A thunderclap startled Mia awake from her dream. She grabbed her vibrating phone and answered Julie's video call.
On the screen appeared a bloodied head, causing Mia to drop the phone in shock and huddle at the bed's edge.
"Mia, if you don't come now, you won't even get to see your father's last moments. He wants to leave you the remaining shares and your mother's belongings," Julie's voice echoed from the phone.
