Chapter 4 - What next?

Arin's pov

"Alpha Vaughn and Luna Callista are hosting the party themselves." One of the omega's announced as I stepped into the kitchen. The pack house was aflutter with movements and I couldn't help but wonder what was going on.

"Where have you been? Madam Emelda has been looking for you." An omega, Karen, informed me.

"I...um, I had an errand to run." I stuttered over my words and she quirked a brow at me.

"I don't care where you really were but you have to come up with a better lie than that if you are hoping to fool Emelda." Karen retorted.

"Where is she?" I asked carefully.

"I can't say. She's been all over the pack house all morning." She shrugged.

"What's going on?" I asked, gesturing to the other omega's frantically moving in and out of the kitchen.

Alpha Vaughn has decided to celebrate Siena's birthday here in the pack house and of course we have to get the place ready for the occasion." She informed me and I nodded slowly. I couldn't exactly say I was suprised when Siena was the beta's daughter and a friend to Luna Callista.

"I heard it's because the alpha secretly hopes she is one of his sons mate. It would be a double celebration...her birthday and a union between their families." Another omega who had, no doubt, been eavesdropping added.

What was it with omega's and their inability to mind their business and not listen in on private conversations.

"It's not a secret. Everyone is counting on Siena's mate being one of the alpha triplets." Karen retorted.

As they started gushing on about Siena's many attributes I slowly slipped away with a roll of my eyes. I had heard them sing her enough praises to last a lifetime.

"Where have you been?" Emelda's loud voice stopped me in my tracks. Emelda was the head omega in charge of assigning work to the omega's within the pack house.

"I was on an errand." I replied vaguely.

"And who gave you this errand?" She quirked a brow at me and I scrambled for an answer.

"Elder Mava." I blurted out.

Emelda would never ask Elder Mava whether she had really sent me on an errand or not, the woman was hardly present in the pack and quite frankly appeared to hate any form of communication she deemed irrelevant. Most pack members shied away from communicating with her.

"And what errand did she send you on?" Emelda inquired.

"It was a private matter." I simply retorted and Emelda's lips turned downwards.

"We have a lot of work to do. Don't just stand there, get to work." She snapped and I sprang into action.

As I walked away, a sly grin spread on my face and I knew I had gotten away with my little lie.

For the rest of the day I joined the other omega's as we organized the hall were the event was to take place. We scrubbed and cleaned and polished every surface until everywhere was squeaky clean.

The dining table was set, strategically placing Siena right beside Kael and I knew immediately Alpha Vaughn had hopes on Siena and Kael being mates.

By the time everything was set and ready it was already late in the evening. Emelda gave us a few minutes to freshen up before we were to return to the dining room and wait for further instructions.

"I'm just excited we will be there to see how the mate bond pulls them together." One of the omega's giggled.

"It will be so romantic." Another squealed just before I walked into the bathroom.

The burning sensation on my neck had dulled to a mere throbbing and I grabbed the little mirror hung on the wall and inspected the area.

My lips parted silently as I stared at the tiny arrow which rested on my collarbone like a tattoo. The arrow was dark and lined with three smaller dots.

Where had that come from?

Was this what Elder Mava had seen? Did she know what it meant?

"Hey, are you going to come out of there or what?" Someone banged on the door and I immediately hung the mirror back in place.

I quickly had my bath, dressed and headed back into the dining room where a few pack members had started trooping in for the party.

The omega's were strategically positioned. A few at the far end of the dining area, some at the food stand and others at the end of the room.

I leaned against the wall and eagerly waited as my wolf stirred within me. I couldn't place it but somehow I knew I would meet my wolf tonight.

Low gasps ripped through the room as Siena finally made an appearance. She looked breathtaking and nothing short of royalty and as she took her seat low murmurs of admiration as well as approval rang out.

A few minutes later Rowan walked into the room and stared directly at Siena, everyone held their breath in anticipation but he simply took his seat beside her and it was obvious they weren't mates. Some people let out a sigh of relief which was, however, shortlived when Jaxon also stepped into the room. He noticed the tension in the air and smirked at the room before he also took his seat at the table. There was no declaration or mate bond snapping into place and that left only one person.

My wolf stirred within me as Kael walked into the room, his expression blank as every step he took commanded authority. The mark by my collarbone scorched my skin and I held on to it, hoping the pain would go away.

Kael stopped in his tracks and everyone held their breath. He turned and looked directly my way and our eyes met.

"Mate." My wolf announced within me. Kael slowly made his way towards me, brushing my hand away and caressing the mark on my collarbone.

"Mate." He announced, loud enough for the whole room to here and the room went still.
