Chapter 10 - 10

Returning to Kuoh Academy on Monday morning felt different for Ren. The usual anxieties about his fake relationship with Chitoge were still present, but they were now overlaid with a new layer of tension. Chitoge and Tsugumi knew. They didn't know everything, not by a long shot, but they knew he wasn't normal, that he could produce fire from his hands, and that his infant "brother" was anything but.

Chitoge was waiting for him at the school gates, as per their established, Claude-mandated routine. Her expression was still carefully neutral, but the way she looked at him had changed. There was less overt hostility in her blue eyes, replaced by a wary curiosity, a sort of reluctant assessment. It was almost more unnerving than her usual glares.

"Takakura," she said, her voice a little quieter than usual. "You're on time today. Miraculous."

"Didn't want to keep my… uh… devoted girlfriend waiting," Ren replied, the words still feeling foreign and ridiculous on his tongue.

Their walk to class was, if possible, even more awkward than before. The usual whispers and stares from other students continued, but now Ren was acutely aware of Chitoge's sideways glances, of Tsugumi's even more intense scrutiny from her usual position a few paces behind. He felt like he was under a microscope, not just from the general student body, but from the two people who now shared a piece of his impossible secret.

Tsugumi's behavior had shifted subtly. Her professionalism was still absolute, her focus on Chitoge's safety unwavering. But her observation of Ren was now less about general suspicion and more about… analysis. He could almost feel her cataloging his movements, his reactions, trying to reconcile the clumsy, stressed-out Takakura she'd initially assessed with the boy who had conjured flames and faced down monsters. Several times, he caught her staring at his hands, a thoughtful, almost calculating expression on her face.

Chitoge, for her part, seemed to be oscillating between her default tsundere aggression and moments of uncharacteristic quietness. Sometimes she would snap at him for some perceived slight, her voice as sharp as ever. Other times, she would just watch him, a frown creasing her brow, as if trying to solve a particularly frustrating puzzle. The dynamic of their fake relationship, already a minefield, had become infinitely more complex. The shared trauma of the Stray Devil attack, and the partial revelation of Ren's abilities, had forged an unwilling, unspoken bond between them, a connection built on shared danger rather than affection.

Kosaki Onodera, with her gentle perceptiveness, noticed the shift immediately. "Takakura-kun," she said during lunch, her voice soft with concern, "you seem… different today. And Kirisaki-san too. Did something happen over the weekend?"

Ren, caught off guard, just mumbled something about a "very intense movie" they'd seen, a lie that sounded weak even to him. Kosaki didn't press, but her worried gaze lingered on him.

Haru Onodera, Kosaki's spirited younger sister, was less subtle. She cornered Ren near the science labs, her arms crossed, her expression demanding. "Alright, Takakura-senpai! What's going on? Nee-chan is worried about you, which means I'm worried about you. And you and that Kirisaki woman have been acting even weirder than usual. Spill it!"

"Weirder than usual?" Ren echoed, trying to appear innocent. "I don't know what you mean, Haru-san. Everything's perfectly… normal."

Haru snorted. "Normal? Senpai, you look like you haven't slept in a week, and your 'girlfriend' looks like she's constantly contemplating new and interesting ways to commit murder, possibly yours. That's not normal, even for you two." Her sharp eyes narrowed. "And I saw Kirisaki-san's bodyguard, Tsugumi-senpai, actually looking at you today without looking like she wanted to immediately neutralize you. That's definitely not normal. So, what gives?"

Ren managed to stammer out some unconvincing excuse about the pressures of their "very serious relationship" and make a hasty retreat, but Haru's perceptive observations left him feeling even more exposed. The facade was cracking, not just for him, but for Chitoge and Tsugumi as well. Their shared secret was a heavy burden, and it was starting to show.

The most unsettling development of the day, however, came from the Occult Research Club. During the lunch break, as Ren was trying to find a quiet corner to eat his bento and avoid further interrogation from Haru, he found his path blocked by two familiar, strikingly beautiful figures.

Rias Gremory, her crimson hair a vibrant splash of color against the drab school hallway, stood before him, her blue-green eyes fixed on him with an unnerving intensity. Beside her, Akeno Himejima offered her usual enigmatic, alluring smile.

"Ren Takakura," Rias said, her voice calm but carrying an undeniable undercurrent of authority. "We had a brief chat the other day. I believe my vice-president extended an invitation for you to visit the Occult Research Club."

"Uh, yes, Gremory-senpai," Ren said, feeling a familiar sense of apprehension. "I… I've been meaning to." That was a lie. He'd been actively trying to avoid it.

"Excellent," Rias said, a faint smile touching her lips. "Then perhaps you'd care to join us now? We have some free time before afternoon classes. And we find ourselves… particularly intrigued by you, Takakura-kun. Especially after certain… energetic displays we may have been privy to over the weekend."

Ren froze. Energetic displays? Had they seen something at the amusement park? Or was she referring to something else entirely? The way she looked at him, the knowing glint in her eyes, sent a shiver down his spine. These weren't just popular school seniors. They were something more. Something… different.

Akeno giggled softly. "Don't look so alarmed, Takakura-kun. We just want to talk. The ORC is a place for those with… unique perspectives on the world. And we have a feeling your perspective might be very unique indeed."

Trapped. Again. Ren looked from Rias's regal, expectant face to Akeno's captivating, mischievous smile. He had a sinking feeling that refusing this invitation was not really an option. And whatever awaited him in the mysterious Occult Research Club, it was unlikely to make his already complicated life any simpler. The shadows in Kuoh Town were not just filled with Stray Devils and mafia tutors; they apparently also housed beautiful, powerful schoolgirls with secrets of their own.
