Chapter 34 - Chapter 39: The Gathering Storm

Prelude to Chaos

The journey from the ruined depot to their next target, an old citadel converted into a Broken Throne garrison, was fraught with unease. The group was growing stronger, their successes bolstering their confidence, but Eren knew the dangers of overconfidence. The enemy would not remain idle after their losses; they would strike back with a vengeance.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the rebellion's core group—Eren, Lyssandra, Kieran, and Catria—gathered around a small campfire. The map lay open between them, illuminated by the flickering flames.

"This citadel," Eren began, tapping the map, "is more than just a military base. It's a hub for their logistics. If we take it out, their ability to move troops and supplies through this region will be crippled."

Kieran frowned, arms crossed. "It's also heavily fortified. We're talking reinforced walls, archers on the battlements, and likely some nasty surprises waiting inside."

Lyssandra leaned on her spear, her expression thoughtful. "We've faced worse. But if we're going to pull this off, we'll need more than brute force. What's the plan?"

Eren traced his finger along the map, outlining a river that ran near the citadel. "The river is our key. It flows beneath the walls, through a series of old aqueducts. If we can navigate it, we'll gain access to the citadel's lower levels without raising an alarm."

Catria raised an eyebrow. "And once we're inside?"

"We disable their defenses and open the gates. Once the gates are down, the rest of the rebellion can storm the citadel," Eren said.

Preparations for the Assault

The next day was spent in meticulous preparation. Eren and Kieran scouted the river, mapping its course and noting potential hazards. Lyssandra worked with Catria's mercenaries to ready the main force, drilling them in formations and strategies for the assault.

As night fell, Eren gathered the group for final instructions. "This mission isn't just about destroying the citadel—it's about sending a message. The Broken Throne believes they're invincible, but we'll show them they're wrong."

Kieran smirked, his bow slung over his shoulder. "No pressure, right?"

Lyssandra placed a reassuring hand on Eren's shoulder. "We've got this."

Catria, ever pragmatic, added, "Just don't get yourselves killed. I need you alive to finish the job."

The Aqueducts

The river was cold and unforgiving, its dark waters swirling as Eren, Lyssandra, and Kieran waded in. The aqueducts loomed ahead, their arched stone openings half-submerged.

"Lovely place," Kieran muttered, his voice echoing in the confined space.

Lyssandra rolled her eyes. "Focus. We can't afford distractions."

The journey through the aqueducts was tense. The air was damp and heavy, and the sound of rushing water filled their ears. Slime-coated walls made footing treacherous, and more than once, Kieran had to catch himself to avoid slipping.

Midway through, they encountered their first obstacle: an iron grate barring their path. Rusted but sturdy, it resisted their initial attempts to move it.

Eren stepped forward, his hands glowing with heat. "Step back."

With a burst of flame, he melted the corroded metal, creating a gap wide enough to pass through.

"Convenient," Kieran said, stepping through.

Eren's smile was grim. "Let's hope it stays that way."

Inside the Citadel

Emerging from the aqueducts, they found themselves in a dimly lit storage chamber beneath the citadel. Barrels of provisions and crates of weapons were stacked haphazardly, and the faint sound of footsteps echoed above.

Lyssandra gestured for silence, her spear at the ready. "Stay close. We don't know how many are stationed here."

The group moved cautiously, avoiding patrols as they navigated the labyrinthine corridors. Eren's knowledge of the map proved invaluable, guiding them toward the citadel's central defenses.

Reaching the control room for the gates, they found it guarded by a squad of soldiers. Eren motioned for Kieran to take position.

The archer nodded, nocking an arrow. Within moments, the first guard fell silently, followed by another. Lyssandra and Eren rushed in, dispatching the remaining soldiers before they could raise an alarm.

With the control room secured, Eren approached the mechanism that operated the gates. Complex gears and levers interlocked, their purpose clear but daunting.

"Think you can handle it?" Lyssandra asked.

Eren examined the controls, his mind racing. "I'll manage. Just hold the room until I'm done."

The Battle Outside

Meanwhile, Catria's forces awaited the signal to attack. Hidden in the nearby forest, they watched the citadel's gates, tension mounting as minutes dragged on.

"Come on, Eren," Catria muttered, her grip tightening on her sword.

When the gates finally began to creak open, the mercenaries surged forward with a battle cry. Archers on the battlements loosed arrows, but the rebellion's shields held firm as they advanced.

Explosions rocked the walls as rebels used stolen siege weapons to breach the citadel's defenses. The sound of steel clashing against steel filled the air as the battle raged.

The Commander's Gambit

Inside the citadel, Eren and his team regrouped after opening the gates. The victory seemed within reach—until a booming voice echoed through the corridors.

"So, the vermin think they've won," said the citadel's commander, a towering figure clad in dark armor etched with runes.

The group turned to face him, their weapons ready.

"You've made it far, but this is where your rebellion ends," the commander declared, drawing a massive halberd that pulsed with malevolent energy.

The fight was brutal. The commander's strength was overwhelming, each swing of his halberd shaking the ground. Lyssandra's spear clashed against the weapon, sparks flying, while Kieran's arrows barely penetrated his enchanted armor.

Eren's flames burned bright, but the commander's power seemed to absorb and counteract them. "You're strong," Eren said through gritted teeth, "but you're not invincible."

Drawing on his system's power, Eren unleashed a new skill—a torrent of blue flame that pierced the commander's defenses. The halberd fell from his hands as the flames consumed him, leaving only ashes.

Victory and Sacrifice

With the commander defeated, the citadel fell to the rebellion. Cheers erupted as Catria's forces secured the remaining areas.

Eren stood amidst the wreckage, his body weary but his resolve unbroken. "This is just one step," he said to Lyssandra and Kieran. "The Wyrmspire is still ahead."

Catria approached, a rare smile on her face. "You've done the impossible, Eren. But you're right—this war isn't over."

As dawn broke over the smoldering citadel, Eren gazed toward the distant peak of the Wyrmspire. The final battle loomed, and he knew the cost of victory would only grow.
