Chapter 1 - one

"Look!" He exclaimed. "A fool in it's natural habitat!"

The people around burst into laughter wondering what manner of man he was, being so unrestrained in a community of people that valued that their solitude and sobriety, it was ironic.

"I sincerely think we all should calm down and listen what the lad has to say now, aye?" Another man in the crowd quipped.

She stood there in the midst of the crowd, an amused look on her face as she watched the show, lamenting inwardly about why she had decided to leave her bag of melons at home.

Suddenly her attention was diverted, it was a man…the man!

He walked right past the crowd apathetically like nothing in this world could bear the weight of his attention, he reminded her of an immortal. His indifference amazed her, the manner at which he operated, always measured, not exceeding the mark but not enough to satisfy curious minds. It was not alienation, it was a kind of aloofness from worldly affairs, it was what caught her attention in the first place.

She usually found it extremely frustrating how her attention span was in the negatives but he always managed to have it revolve around him everytime she encountered him, like her attention could only belong to him, especially seeing how she had not been able to get him out of her mind since the past two weeks.

Meanwhile he was the complete and utter opposite. He spared no more than a glance at everything, at the world. He gave nothing his attention, how frustrating!

Having lost interest in the farce going on in the park, she decided to leave anyways, she then found herself trailing after the older man. His age, that was another thing that intrigued her about him, which was another very shocking fact, because nothing catches her intrigue for long, but she found herself attracted to the man like a fly to a light source.

Well, back to the point he was older than her, by a lot, well not a lot but the only man she knew that was in the same age range was her uncle, who was married with kids. So it was strange to find an older man like him still single, and given how accomplished he seemed, one would think he was already hitched. That thought brought a satisfied smile to her face, how no woman had managed to pin him down, though she didn't understand why.

Lost in thoughts still, she realized the man had walked into a private community, and then into an apartment building.

She took a breathe to gather her thoughts before she followed him into the elevator.

The man finally seemed to notice her existence, but even if he did he made no efforts to acknowledge it, directly ignoring her. He made no move to ask her what floor she was going, unfazed she turned her attention to her phone, scrolling through dozens of unread messages and contemplating whether to answer them.

As a result she didn't notice the man giving her a sizing look through the mirror-like wall of the elevator, but after sizing her up, he went back to ignoring her.

With a ding, the elevator opened. Top Floor.

There were only two apartments in the top floor, so without a doubt she was the second owner, a thought appeared in his head as he remembered the response of the agent when he asked if he was going to be able to keep his peace, he had said, "Oh, it's just the landlord's apartment and yours!" Oh.

He had opened the door and just as he was to step in, a subtle silky voice rang out, he looked up in time to catch the smile in her eyes, "Good evening, neighbour!"

He had no time to respond before she slammed the door shut.

He had no reactions, not even a raised eyebrow, he continued in like that interaction did not just add a spark of color to his whole day. Robotically.

She hadn't been expecting a reply from him anyways.

She collapsed onto her sofa, exhausted like she hadn't been frolicking on there all day until she had to go for that run.

'I should take a shower', was the thought that raised her from the sofa, and that was what she did.
