Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Countdown

Day One

It passed like fog.

Mason barely ate.

He barely moved.

Every sound made him flinch, the groan of the fridge, the creak of the floorboards, even the sound of his own heartbeat sometimes. The walls felt closer now, like they were leaning in.

The TV turned on by itself three times.

Once at noon. Once at 3:14 p.m. And again just after midnight.

Each time, it buzzed with static. No sound. No channel. Just that white snow that seemed to pulse in rhythm with his breath.

He unplugged it.

It came back on anyway.

That night, sleep was not a gift. It was a trap.

He dreamed of the hallway again.

Same black tiles. Same fog drifting endlessly upward. Same weight in his chest.

The door was still there.

Still marked EMILY'S ROOM.

But this time, something knocked from the other side.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

Then the whisper again, louder than before:

"Time is a mercy."

He woke up screaming.

Day Two

The package arrived just after sunrise.

No knock. No footsteps. Just there, on the porch.

A plain cardboard box. No postage. No return label. Just his name, handwritten in thick, uneven letters.

MASON.

He stood over it for a long time before touching it. Like it might bite.

Eventually, he carried it inside and opened it on the kitchen table.

Inside—no message.

Just a photograph.

Of him.

Asleep.

Same couch. Same blanket. Mouth slightly open. Arms crossed over his chest.

It had been taken last night.

While he slept.

His hands went numb.

He turned the photo over.

On the back, written in tiny, deliberate letters:

FOUR DAYS.
