Chapter 20 - Of Triumph and Promise

Chapter 18: Of Triumph and Promise

The crowd was still roaring when the Head Instructor raised one hand, and the entire arena quieted like the sky before thunder.

"Kai of Emberlight," he said, voice deep and resonant. "You have passed the Trial by Ascension not just with success—but with distinction. Against overwhelming odds, you displayed mastery, creativity, and clarity of will."

A golden column of light cascaded from the clouds, draping over Kai like a mantle of recognition. The air rippled as the system stirred.

Every breath felt cleaner. Every heartbeat steadier. His perception widened; he could hear the difference in the way people blinked. The Emberlight Crest Ring hummed quietly against his finger, pulsing with prestige.

As Kai stepped off the stone platform, a familiar figure met him partway.

Instructor Vale, arms folded, stood with an expression of studied neutrality. But there was a glint in her eyes that betrayed something deeper.

"That final exchange was reckless," she said evenly. "Fighting someone of Alric's weight class with a prototype technique? That's how people get broken."

"I didn't break," Kai replied.

"No," she admitted, walking closer, "You didn't."

She looked at him for a long moment, then—without fanfare—reached up and kissed him lightly on the cheek.

It was brief. But somehow heavier than any accolade he had ever received.

She stepped back, gaze cool again. "Don't let it go to your head. Tomorrow, you're back in my drills."

Kai blinked, then grinned. "Wouldn't dream of missing them."

That evening, the Emberlight training courtyard sat quiet beneath a blue moon. Kai stood beneath one of the cherrywood arches, the Emberlight Ring still warm on his hand.

He wasn't alone.

Ren jogged across the field, panting slightly, still favoring his injured shoulder from the Verdant Wilds.

"Kai!" he called out.

Kai turned. "Ren?"

Ren stopped just a few paces away, face flushed and serious.

"I saw what you did today," Ren said. "You didn't just win—you crushed them. You created something in the middle of battle. That… I want that."

Kai stayed quiet.

Ren met his gaze, determination written across every line of his small frame.

"I don't want to be saved anymore. I want to stand. Fight. On my own. Will you train me?"

Kai walked closer, then knelt slightly so they were eye to eye.

"You're not using Reality Grasp."

Ren shook his head. "No. I want to learn to fight. My way. The right way."

Kai smiled. Not the calm, mysterious grin he wore in the arena—but the real one. Proud. Grounded.

"Alright. But no shortcuts."

"I don't want any," Ren said quickly.

That night, under silver starlight and temple lanterns, Kai began teaching. No techniques, no advanced movements—just the bones of battle.

Footing.

Balance.

Breath.

For hours, they moved—Ren fumbling, falling, getting back up. Again and again.

Kai watched, corrected, adjusted.

He remembered how it had been for him. And now, the cycle turned.

Victory wasn't the end.

It was a beginning.

Little did Kai and Ren know, this would lead to a devastating martial arts duo in the future. Reality Grasp and Limit Break.

Two martial artists that alone could change the tide of a war.
