Chapter 36 - The Weight of Shadows

Chapter 35: The Weight of Shadows

The first light of dawn sliced through the mist over Emberlight's training grounds. The air was cold, sharp, and filled with the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves. Ren stood alone in the center of the sparring ring, fists clenched and eyes fixed forward.

Instructor Vale appeared silently at the ring's edge, her presence a steel blade in the quiet morning.

"No more half-measures," she said, voice low but firm. "You're not training for the academy. You're training for survival."

Ren swallowed, muscles tense. "I'm ready."

"Ready to be broken, or ready to break your limits?"

The day unfolded as a grueling test of body and will. Vale pushed Ren through exhausting drills—precision strikes, relentless footwork, endurance runs that burned his lungs, and sparring sessions where she countered every move with calculated strikes.

Ren's arms shook from the repeated impacts, his breath ragged, but Vale's relentless gaze never wavered.

"You have Kai's spirit, but not his discipline," she said between rounds. "Spirit alone won't save you in the trials to come."

In the silence between exertions, Ren's mind drifted to the letter in his pocket—the last message from Kai. Words unread, promise unspoken.

He tightened his fists, resolve hardening. Kai's absence wasn't just a void—it was a call.

By nightfall, Ren's body ached with exhaustion, but a fire kindled within him burned brighter than pain.

Vale approached him as the stars blinked awake overhead.

"You're beginning to climb," she said, a rare softness in her tone. "Keep moving forward, or you'll be left behind."

Ren nodded, knowing the path ahead was long — and that without Kai, the burden was his alone to bear.

Vale's silhouette faded into the shadows as Ren stayed behind in the ring, staring up at the night sky. The stars seemed distant, yet somehow closer than ever. His muscles throbbed with fatigue, but his spirit was resolute.

I'll become stronger. For Kai. For Emberlight. For the future.

With a slow, steady breath, Ren rose from the ground and wiped the sweat from his brow.

Tomorrow was another day — and the mountain was waiting.
