Chapter 7 - Hidden Agendas

Modern technology and antique architecture were expertly combined at the Royal Institute's medical wing. Modern diagnostic equipment shone under soft lighting, complemented by arched windows and marble columns.

Dr. Laurent said, "Your preliminary genetic screening," as she moved a folder across the consultation table. "We'll need comprehensive tests to fully map the potential Valois Syndrome markers."

Lily looked over the initial findings, her analytical mind immediately working through the information. Gabriel was sitting next to her, his shoulders set tensely.

"These early markers," she said, "they're similar to the research samples I've been studying in Boston."

Dr. Laurent gave a nod. "Dr. James, your work has received a lot of attention. Your strategy for stabilizing enzymes has piqued the curiosity of the Royal Medical Institute.

Gabriel spoke up before she could reply. "What are the immediate implications for our child?"

With decades of family history and personal anxiety attached, the question lingered in the air.

Dr. Laurent was careful with his words. "While the genetic profile points to possible markers, it is not conclusive. The most thorough knowledge we've seen may come from Dr. James's research.

Lily sensed that Gabriel was looking at her. She recognized the gravity of his silence, the same genetic disorder that had killed his mother would now endanger their pregnant child.

She stated, "We'll need extensive longitudinal studies," while keeping her professional distance from her growing feelings. "Tracking genetic expression across multiple generations."

They were interrupted by a knock. Marc walked in, his normal poise a little shaken. "Your Highness, a moment?"

Gabriel excused himself and left Dr. Laurent and Lily. The doctor's attitude changed as soon as the door shut.

Whispering, "Dr. James," he whispered, "the Institute is ready to make you a big research funding offer. Naturally, contingent on specific circumstances.

Her instincts as a scientist ignited. "What conditions?"

"Ongoing access to the genetic records of the royal family. exclusive rights to conduct research. A contract was slid across the table by him.

"A collaborative arrangement that benefits both Vallémont and your research."

It was an alluring proposition. Her biggest obstacle had always been funding. The unexpected generosity, however, seemed strange.

In the meantime, Marc quietly briefed Gabriel in the corridor.

"The eastern provinces delegation is requesting an urgent meeting," Marc stated. "There are signs of increasing separatist movements."

Gabriel's mouth clenched. "How serious?"

"Serious enough that your father believes personal intervention may be necessary."

In Vallémont, political conflicts were a persistent undertone.

Gabriel had devoted years to maintaining careful diplomatic equilibrium and averting possible rifts in the stability of the realm.

He went back to the consultation room to find Lily looking critically at the research contract.

He said, "Interesting offer?"

Her green eyes were keen as she raised her head. "Complicated, but intriguing. They're not only interested in my research.

Lady Camille arrived, interrupting their chat. Her smile was a well-planned weapon as she entered the room with poised elegance.

She said, "Gabriel," before turning to face Lily. "Dr. James. I hope everything is going smoothly with the medical evaluations.

The subtext was obvious. She reminded Lily of her vulnerable situation by demarcating her territory.

"Lady Belcourt," Lily said calmly in response. "I wasn't aware this was a social visit."

Though musical, Camille's chuckle lacked warmth. "One must always be aware of potential... changes in the royal landscape."

Camille noted the small gesture of support as Gabriel's hand touched Lily's.

He said, "If you'll excuse us," in a tone that made no room for debate.

Lily's thoughts were racing as they walked out of the medical wing. She was only now starting to see how everything felt connected to the political pressures, the genetic markers, the research contract.

Gabriel said, "You're quiet," as they strolled around the royal grounds.

"Analyzing," this was her response. "There's more happening here than medical research."

He did not refute it.

They were stopped in the main hall by Princess Elizabeth. "Papa wants to see you, Gabriel. Immediately."

The siblings' exchange of glances said a lot. There was something simmering, either personal or political, or possibly both.

"Go," said Lily. "I can find my way back to the suite."

But as royal responsibilities drew Gabriel away, Lily saw Marcus observing her intently, as if she were more than a passing guest.

Unconsciously, her hand went to her tummy. This child, this unintended heir, was turning into the focal point of a complicated political puzzle that she was only now starting to understand.

The palace of Vallémont kept its mysteries to itself. Lily was resolved to untangle them.

At a time, one genetic marker.
