Chapter 9 - 8. What the future holds IV

"Stop here !" Daenerys raised her hands to stop him and Qhono.

The three people on the back stopped at the edge of a hilltop. After dismounting their horses Daenerys went to the edge of the hill followed by the other two.

"Well damn. This is a literal lake of green mist."

What the future holds IV

"I have never seen anything like this before." Jorah muttered beside me.

(Dothraki language) "This is the place from where Khal Drogo had returned without venturing further." Qhono told me.

"Qhono, give me fire." I ordered Qhono.

He looked confused. But he didn't complain and went to create a lamp.

I had no idea what kind of mist was down there. There was barely any air flow under the hill. So hoping for the mist to disappear on its own would be foolish. Instead I was planning to light it up to see if there is any oxygen down there or how deep it was. The gas might be toxic. And since there was no information about the gas with me, I would rather not take any risk of venturing further. Applying simple physics, it is clear that the gas was very dense if we could not even smell it from up the hill. Considering that the area in front of us was well lit, I would bet that the green gas is very dense and heavy. It might not even reach the level of my waist. But only a good flame can determine the real depth of the mist. It would also help me determine if there is enough oxygen on the ground. Of course there is a risk that the gas might be toxic or flammable, but we were in an open space and at a safe distance. Even if something goes wrong we can just make a run for it on our horses. So I was not that worried about it.

"Khaleesi, the flame." Qhono handed me over the lamp.

"Qhono, back down with the horses and my children."

"Ser Jorah, you too, should back down. There is a chance that the mist might be flammable. Fire will not hurt me. But I can't say the same thing for you." I ordered them in languages in which they could understand.

Qhono obeyed without any question. Jorah looked reluctant but he too, followed Qhono.

At first I picked up a rock and threw it into the green mist. The rock was big enough to make noise after hitting the ground. But surprisingly nothing like that happened. Instead of the sound of collision between two solid objects the sound that I heard was the collision between a solid object and a liquid surface. The splashing sound was clear enough. That means there is no ground where the rock landed.

"What is that noise ?" Jorah asked out loud, behind me.

"There is no ground under there. It might be a water body." I told him before making my next move. Taking the lamp I snapped the other end of the branch and burnt it on fire. After extinguishing the flame in my hand, I tossed the branch containing the heat to the green mist below me. Surprisingly nothing happened at first.

So I decided to toss another burning stick into the mist.

This time, the green mist finally caught fire. At first it started the burn like a normal flame. But then slowly the flame started turning blue in colour that usually happens when there is enough oxygen to burn the fuel properly. It indicated two possibilities. First, there might be a lot of oxygen down there. Or the green mist might contain a strange chemical which caused the blue flames. Since there was no explosion I decided to call the other two of my followers.

We waited for a long time for the flame to burn. After 3 hours of continuous burning finally the smoke and fire disappeared leaving a massive body of water. But that was not the most shocking part.

"Kha- Khaleesi….. That's !"

"It is the skeleton of a dragon." I completed the sentence.

"Ser Jorah, how much money do you think a small piece of dragon bone can bring us ?" I asked him. In both Westeros and Essos, Dragon bones are considered very valuable products. Especially in Essos where ornaments created from the bones of a dragons' horns or tails are considered more valuable than gold. In fact, unprocessed Dragon bones are valued highly for their contents of magic in the black market. Many nobles see it as a luxury item of decoration. So even if I ignore the sword protruding from its skull, I had a lot of reasons to go there and collect the Dragon bones.

"Enough for you to live the rest of your life in luxury, Khaleesi." Jorah murmured. Then he turned towards me. "Or enough to buy an army of sell-swords…."

(Dothraki language)

"Qhono, return to the camp. Tell everyone to come here. We have enough food. And I doubt any other Khal coming here anytime soon. We will mine Dragon bones from that skeleton. And one more thing. Bring the dead bodies of the enemy you have slain. Bring as much intact corpses as you can." I ordered Qhono.

"As you wish, khaleesi."

I like guys like Qhono who don't question my orders and complete them with maximum efficiency.

"Ser Jorah, prepare a camp. I will feed my children." I told him as I went towards my horse where my baby Dragons were.

It took 6 days for the entire khalasar of 200 people to come to the hill where we were camping. And during that time I and Jorah took our horses and searched the perimeter. The hill was the only place where the gas coming out of the lake couldn't reach. But it was not going far since the entire lake was covered with thick rows of fig trees.

Jorah and I also found quite a few strange birds who didn't have large wing but legs powerful enough to jump from One tree to another. I couldn't recognise the bird. But considering my limited knowledge on birds, I was not sure if it was a native species of the world.

The meat of these birds tested like chicken. But it had a strange tangy flavour to it. Jorah even managed to find the secret location of their colony in a underground cave under the most dense part of the woods.

Considering their number, I was relieved that even if we spend a considerable time mining the Dragon bones and taking the Drago-nova sword, we will still have of study food supply for our journey through the red waste.

After the khalasar showed on the hilltop, I took my men and got to work. Among the 200 people around 170 could actively work. At first I divided leaf groups into 7 different parts and provided each part with leader who would lead them to do their work.

The first two groups led by myself checked the lethality of the water by testing it on the 5 corpses brought by Qhono. We also built a boat and a cart. Since there was no craftsman in my khalasar, I had to satisfy myself with a giant raft and wheels that are not completely round.

Finally after spending an entire week, our preparation was completed.
