Chapter 65 - Cold Storage

After the duo got on the lower floor, they saw the door open with a shutter and a small room on the side. As the duo entered, Michelle stared at the shutter. "That's the place where Yarnaby took me when I was the Doctor's prisoner..." she said, lowly.

Katelynn looked at Michelle. "Don't worry, Big Sister," she said before raising her arms. "You got me to take care of that bastard with you." Michelle flinched a bit before looking at Katelynn. "While I appreciate it, you shouldn't be saying curses..." she said.

Katelynn pouted at Michelle. "You're being a huge hypocrite; you and Big Brother curse all the time, but when I do it's like the end of the world..." she said. Michelle sweatdropped before sighing. "Alright, but don't turn out like your brother or me," she said.

Katelynn looked at Michelle before giggling a bit. "I can try, but I can't make promises since I'm a Barnes," she said before pointing at her. "And you'll be a future Barnes too."

Michelle stared at Katelynn with a blank expression before her face turned red. "Don't start saying ridiculous stuff?!" she shouted. Katelynn giggled before looking at the cave opening on the right. "That should take us to a different path," she said.

Michelle quickly turned to the right. "Then let's get going!" she shouted before moving forward, which made Katelynn follow behind her.

When the duo was on the other side, they heard the intercoms go off, which made them look around. "Ah, and here you are; just as I expected," the Doctor said. "And it appears you are every bit what the Prototype fears."

The duo glared at the intercoms. "As much as I don't like the bastard, I can see why Leith wanted you in Playcare," the Doctor continued. "Your tenacity and intelligence got you here thus far..."

Katelynn growled as her fingertips turned into claws. "But I'm curious... why come here when you could've stayed back at your old orphanage and not deal with this place?" the Doctor asked. "Was it really to find answers for your missing friends... or is there more to it?"

When the intercom turned off, Michelle stared at it before looking down. Katelynn looked at Michelle, concerned. "Big Sister?" she asked. Michelle took a deep breath and exhaled. "You're probably wondering about what the Doctor asked, right?" she asked.

Katelynn remained silent before looking down, which made Michelle sigh. "The caretakers in my orphanage were talking about kicking me out when I turned eighteen," she said.

Katelynn looked at Michelle, shocked. "Since I knew they were gonna throw me on the streets, I decided that it was better to do it now than have them do it months later," she continued. "I gathered what I could in my bag and left without a trace."

Michelle crossed her arms. "Since a couple of days have apparently passed, I'm not sure if they have a missing flier for me or if they even cared to look around..." she said. "Sometimes I wonder if they even cared about me at all..."

Katelynn frowned before approaching Michelle and wrapping her arms around her. "Well, you have us that care about you..." she said. Michelle turned her head to Katelynn before gently smiling and petting her head. "Thanks for that, Katie..." she said, lowly.

Michelle looked at the wall and saw a warning sign about high voltage, which concerned her. I kinda hope that doesn't happen while we venture through here, she thought.

Michelle turned her head to the rocky ramp. "We'll need to get on that ramp," she said. Katelynn nodded before lifting Michelle to the rocky ramp; after she got on it, they went up.

When the duo turned to the left, they saw liquid nitrogen coming out of the pipe. Katelynn shivered a bit and crossed her arms. "Those bring back bad memories..." she said, lowly.

Michelle spotted an alternate pathway near the liquid nitrogen. "There's an alternate way to pass the liquid nitrogen," she said. Katelynn nodded as the duo went the alternate path; when the duo reached the end, they saw more liquid nitrogen on the lower floor.

Michelle turned her head to Katelynn. "Why don't you stay up here? I'll try to find a way to stop the liquid nitrogen near this opening," she said.

Katelynn nodded as Michelle jumped down; as she looked around the room, she twisted the knob, switching from the orange hand to the red hand. Michelle looked at the handle near the pipe before pulling the right trigger.

The red hand grabbed the handle and pulled on it a bit before it closed, which stopped the liquid nitrogen. Katelynn dropped down before approaching Michelle as she looked around.

Soon after, Michelle spotted a computer with a blue keycard machine on it. "There's a blue keycard around here somewhere," she said before walking forward, which made Katelynn follow behind.

When the duo was close to the tent, Michelle spotted a yellow handle past the liquid nitrogen before pulling the left trigger.

The blue hand grabbed the yellow handle before twisting it, which stopped the liquid nitrogen. "That tent probably has something important," Michelle said.

When Katelynn entered the tent, she spotted a blue keycard on the desk before picking it up. "I found the keycard," she said. Michelle nodded. "Nice; now to take it to the machine," she said.

Katelynn nodded before the duo approached the keycard machine; when they were close, she put it inside the machine, which opened the door on the left.

The duo looked at the door. "Time to move," Michelle said before they walked forward. After the duo went up a ramp, they circled a bit before going right. Soon after, the duo entered a storage room. "What is this place?" Katelynn asked.

Michelle looked at the glass before approaching it. When Michelle was close to the glass, her eyes widened when she saw a pair of lungs in a large machine on the other side. "Are those... lungs?"

Katelynn approached Michelle. "Not just any pair of lungs; I bet they're the Doctor's," she said, which made her look at her. Katelynn looked at the plug on the machine. "Maybe if we give that machine too much power, it'll fry those lungs up," she continued.

Michelle looked at the blue hand scanner before approaching it. "It looks like this calls for a blue hand," she said before looking at the blue pipe next to it. "However... I have a bad feeling about this..."

Michelle turned her head to the back and saw a blue hand with a black cord. "Katie, can you cut the wire that's connected to the blue hand?" she asked. Katelynn looked at the black cord with a hum. "I can try," she said before approaching the blue hand.

When Katelynn was close, her fingertips turned into sharp claws. Katelynn tried slashing at the cable, but it was unfazed, which made her pout a bit. "Damn it, it didn't work..." she said.

Michelle hummed. "That's what I figured..." she said before looking at the saw blade. "I bet that saw blade will do the trick, but it's gonna need a battery."

Michelle looked at Katelynn. "Katie, stand by the stairs; my gut is telling me this is a trap, and unfortunately, to move forward, we have to activate it," she continued. "When those hatches turn green, find a battery and plug it into that saw and cut the wire."

Katelynn looked at Michelle, concerned. "What about you?" she asked. Michelle took a deep breath and exhaled before aiming at the blue hand scanner. "Someone has to activate the trap," she said before pulling the left trigger, launching the blue hand, and touching the scanner.

When the scanner finished, liquid nitrogen sprayed out of the pipe, which froze the blue hand in place. "Showtime," Michelle said. Katelynn quickly opened the hatches. "You're aware that the employees here are dead by the experiments, yes?" the Doctor asked rhetorically.

Soon after, Katelynn found the battery in the third hatch before grabbing it and quickly approaching the saw blade. "Poppy's sold you her story, of course," the Doctor said. "Innocence is bliss... and she is OH so innocent."

Michelle felt the cold coming from the cables, which made her grit her teeth. "Did she ever tell you her part in the Hour of Joy? That she knew it was coming?" the Doctor asked. "Or did she leave out that crucial detail?"

After plugging the battery into the saw blade, Katelynn grabbed the bottom part of it before pulling it to the black cord, which cut the cable and made the blue hand drop. "Yes, that wouldn't surprise me," the Doctor said.

Michelle started shivering. "Has she not strung you along, betrayed you, and told you only what you needed to know to do exactly as she asked?" the Doctor asked.

Michelle glared at the intercom. "You've seen what they do to each other; all they want is violence," the Doctor said. "Look around, evidence for it is everywhere."

Michelle heard the Doctor sigh. "Once they had choice, once they were 'free', THIS was their creation. They've made Hell real, and trapped us BOTH there," he continued. Michelle growled a bit. "Hurry, Katie," she said.

Katelynn quickly approached the mechanism on the left and placed her blue hand on the scanner. When the scanner finished, the door opened, and the liquid nitrogen stopped, which made Michelle retract her blue hand before getting on her knees, shivering.

Katelynn dropped the blue hand and quickly approached Michelle. "Big Sister!" she shouted. Michelle grabbed her left arm and quickly moved it up and down. "I... I-I'm alright..." she said, lowly. "Now I know how you and Matthew felt when subjected to that..."

Katelynn frowned a bit and looked down. "Poppy... did she actually know that the Hour of Joy would happen?" she asked. Michelle stood up, which made Katelynn look at her. "We can worry about that later..." she said.

Michelle turned her head to the left and saw the plug before aiming and pulling the left trigger, launching the blue hand and grabbing it before retracting. "Let's plug this into his lungs," she continued.

Katelynn nodded before the duo entered the room. When the duo was close to the machine, Michelle plugged the cord, which caused the lungs inside the canister to freeze.

Soon after, the lungs shattered into pieces. "Let's get the hell out of here," Michelle said. Katelynn nodded as they left the room; soon after, they saw an opening in the back before approaching it.
