——————————
It was a Monster.
Standing almost 15 feet in height, it was black—dark black, and its outlines radiated a light—almost potent red hue.
"I finally found you," the wolf-like monster spoke.
Its voice was deep but elegant, its lips unmoving, and its words only mental, as if speaking through my consciousness.
My blurry vision gained focus as my eyes caught sight of the corpse who was lying beside it.
And at that moment, the fear I was feeling was gone, the fear of the now headless monster, the body of the monstrous wolf—it all disappeared, as if nothing truly mattered.
And I rushed to the drained, dry corpse, which I used to call my mother.
I was screaming.
Yet, as my hand touched her skull, the little hair that was left started falling, as my eyes noticed her almost unrecognizable face.
And at that moment, I finally understood. Even though I never knew the concept, even though it was never explained, I understood it.
'She was dead.'
—{hour later}
An hour passed, and my knees were now holding up my face, as if to help my feet gain comfort, seeking some type of refuge from the cold that blew through the trees.
The giant wolf that had once spoken said nothing.
It just sat there, watching my every move, as if confident that no matter what I did, I could never escape, and I didn't.
I didn't scream or try to hide.
Nor did I make any attempt to beg for mercy—I didn't know mercy.
I was still too young to understand what it was, but I understood one thing, a feeling that had shown itself through the woman I loved—death.
Maybe that's what I was waiting for, yet it never came.
I was waiting for the monstrous giant wolf to grant it to me.
But it never did.
So we waited. As its gaze locked deep into my eyes, and my own locked deep on its.
Then silence.
But I guess the silence was too much.
As it stood, showing its massive body.
Then suddenly, it shifted—its form transforming into mist—red mist.
And its shape rapidly twisting, until it resembled a strangely tall standing man.
He was wearing a large round hat—one that almost covered his eyes.
And his clothes were all colored red, except for his shirt, which was completely shining white.
He moved and sat near me.
But unlike myself, a rock suddenly rose from the flat, quiet ground, as if awaiting his buttocks.
And he sat down atop its face, like it was a seat.
Then again, it was quiet, as if the monster turned man understood my pain, as if he felt my loneliness.
"Do you want to speak to her?" his voice finally asked. "Your mother?"
——————————
"So, you are also moving to Forks… why?" Bella's expression showed signs of being curious.
The engine of the plane had now started, and it seemed to be preparing to take off.
"The sun's a nightmare," Vlad replied, his tone sounding exaggerated and his eyes shutting, as his hands closed the blinder of the plane.
"Lived with my foster mom since forever, and now I'm off to Forks," Bella's expression grew curious.
"Your foster mom—what's her name?" she asked, as the plane started moving, its movement causing Vlad to react with a widened smile and the feeling of happiness.
"Uh, I forgot… but I call her Gramps. Or Nanny McPhee, whatever gets me out of trouble."
Bella laughed faintly at his words. "Nanny McPhee? Like the movie?"
Vlad nodded at her.
"Yup, sans the wart—she's got the bossy magic down," and Bella shook her head in laughter, disbelief creeping into her mind, as she couldn't believe what the boy in front of her had spoken.
The plane began to ascend, its body floating, leaving the ground and moving to a place anew.
"Huh, finally leaving Phoenix—even the air is different."
Bella, hearing his words, only adjusted her hoodie and smirked.
"Yeah, but that's probably because somebody farted." Vlad spat out in laughter, shaking his red hair and looking at Bella, who was doing the same.
"Perfect, my escape came with a free stink show—Forks, here I come!"
____{minutes later}
30 minutes had gone by, and both Bella and Vlad had been conversing in simple conversations to dull their boredom.
"So… home schooled or skin disease?" her questions grew bold. "I mean, you are just so pale," she asked, questioning his color.
"Genetics," he answered. "You?"
"Not homeschooled, but I usually stayed at home," she spoke.
"What, you hate the sun?"
"Nope, actually love it—just liked staying indoors more."
"Then why Forks?"
"Parents divorced, mother got a new boyfriend, and I'm moving in with my dad."
"That sucks."
"Yep." "Yup."
Silence overtook them, yet it wasn't one of awkwardness, just one of comfort and a friendly atmosphere.
"Huh… can't wait for the clouds," he unknowingly uttered, realizing that the plane's noise was making it harder for him to sleep.
Bella noticed his slightly squinted eyes. "Sun allergies?" her voice faintly wondered.
"Nah, the sun is just my kryptonite—turns me into a walking zombie." Bella laughed faintly at his remark.
"So you're moving to Forks for a shade rehab?"
Vlad chuckled.
"Yup—vampire vibes without the bite… yet." Her laughs showed signs of her arrogance, which for Vlad felt rather ironic.
___{hours later}
"You may now remove your seatbelts and move around the cabin!"
The plane rang its announcement, informing everyone that the 3-hour flight had finally come to an end.
Bella removed her seatbelt, and so did Vlad, and as she reached for her bag, she accidentally elbowed Vlad's 5'3 frame.
"Hey, easy—don't flatten the short king," he joked, as Bella glanced at him.
"What, you're like… 12?"
Vlad only clutched his chest, mocking being hurt.
"I'm 17—Gramps says I'm just a late bloomer," he laughed loudly, as Bella giggled.
"Hope Forks is ready for your pint-sized drama."
"Well, at least I'm beautiful," he laughed last, as Bella just shook her head in surrender.
___{minutes later}
"How are you doing that?" Bella couldn't help but exclaim, as her eyes landed on Vlad, who was carrying both his and Bella's bags through the airport's alley.
"Just because I'm short doesn't make me any less of a man," he loudly remarked. "Under all these clothes is nothing but pure muscle," his words were extreme. "Nothing but manliness, and ho… you should take a look at my third le…"
"Bells," his words were interrupted by a middle-aged man who stood not far from where they walked.
He was holding a small cut box with the name Bella on its front.
And Vlad, through his overly enhanced hearing, could hear her faintly sigh in surrender.
"So… meeting the parents already," he joked. "Don't you think it's a bit too early?"
