Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Espionage

Everything was pitch black, with no light... It was even darker than the cave. Had Niditera captured her? Where was she?

A cold sensation touched her cheek, then moved to her neck. In her blurred consciousness, she tried to dodge it.

Help, help! Can anyone hear me? Why is there only an echo? Her body gradually grew cold, and in the darkness, her slender frame couldn't help but curl up.

But soon, a warm sensation spread through her.

Even though she was dressed as a maid and not adorned with luxurious jewelry, it did nothing to diminish her unique charm. Compared to the flashy countess, she had a more innocent aura, at least not causing any additional strain on his vision.

The woman beside him was charming, but he had never seen a woman with such a face before.

Her jet-black shoulder-length hair, fair skin, delicate features, and slightly upturned nose framed a slightly pouting, pink mouth, which was now slightly open, breathing rapidly.

Her slender fingers were interlaced across her chest, revealing her beautiful curves beneath the loose-fitting dress.

His hand caressed her slightly pale face, then her snow-white neck, and finally her rising and falling chest. He coldly watched the person before him, her brows furrowed, then slowly brought his face closer, close enough to feel her faintly sweet breath.

Who says slightly parted lips aren't a subtle form of temptation?

He gently pressed his lips against her delicate ones, tasting an unexpected blend of bitterness and sweetness.

Unable to resist, where did this heat come from? She shyly tried to respond, but the gentle touch of her tongue gradually turned into a passionate entanglement. She wanted to pull back her tired tongue, but the other person teasingly held it, then demanded more.

"Hmm…" A soft moan escaped her throat, and her body grew hot.

Slowly opening her sleepy eyes, a pair of deep, cold eyes appeared before her without warning, causing her to involuntarily step back several feet in fear.

"What's wrong? Am I that scary?" The man raised an eyebrow in confusion, lazily propping up his head as he watched Ivina cowering in the corner of the bed.

The man before her had black hair tinged with a terrifying crimson hue. His facial features and nose were sharply defined under the cold moonlight, and his eyes were shrouded in shadow, revealing no emotion.

The corners of his mouth curled upward slightly, indicating his good mood, but the next moment, his commanding tone left no room for doubt, "Answer."

"Why am I here?" she asked timidly, her eyes darting around the room.

The spacious bedroom was adorned with various ornaments, each of which appeared to be of considerable value. From this, it seemed likely that the man was a vampire of high status.

Ivina cautiously looked at the man in front of her, regretting her previous evasive answer.

"I suppose I should ask you that..." The man shrugged his shoulders and slowly leaned closer to her.

"Me?" She only knew that at the time, she had been starving and had rejoiced at finding food, but then, terrifyingly, those delicacies had instantly turned into rocks, rotten leaves, and sewage... Then she had fallen, and the fear of plunging into an abyss so deep that she still shuddered at the thought of it now.

Could it be that he had saved her?

Ivina clung to a sliver of hope, wishing he was benevolent. But that hope crumbled quickly.

"Such a common trap—even if you're just a maid, you should have been able to recognize and avoid it with your abilities. Yet you showed no caution. As an adult vampire, you deserve it." The man's tone was unusually cold.

In her eyes, he had no emotions and no compassion.

"I had no idea it was a trap. I was just very hungry and happened to see a table with food, so I went over there… It's perfectly normal." Ivina clenched her fists in anger. Did her ordeal not deserve even a shred of sympathy? The next moment, tears were about to spill from her eyes. She awkwardly got up and left the warm goose-down mattress, her feet touching the cold ground, causing her to shiver uncontrollably.

"I am deeply grateful for your rescue. Now, I must take my leave." Ivina bowed respectfully toward the lazy figure on the bed, then turned and walked away.

"Aren't you hungry now?" A magnetic voice accompanied by a low laugh slowly came from behind Ivina.

"You fell into the 'desire' trap. I set it specifically to capture lower animals. Once you fall into this trap, your most direct desire will surface at the last moment. And your desire is… human food. This is truly surprising and intriguing to me."

She couldn't see the man's eyes, but she knew he had been watching her from behind.

"Clearly, you are human."

Ivina stiffened as she turned around, her heart pounding violently.

Her identity had been exposed.
